The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter first flew in 1954, Starfighters then broke the world altitude re- cord in May 1958 and the world air-speed record nine days later. It was the first aircraft to hold both records simultaneously. The F-104 was born from combat against Communist MiG-15 jet aircraft during the Korean War. During its 50-year career, it was used by no less than 15 nations from Jordan to Taiwan, Italy finally retired its fleet in 2005. Through more than 160 vintage photos, numerous line drawings and new NEW color profiles, this new volume chronicles the remark- able military career of this aircraft. 80 pages. SS10244 $19.95 $17.99 WWW.SQUADRON.COM 2 TOLL FREE: 1-877-414-0434 Small, Small World As far back as I can remember, airplane models have always been my favorite. At a very young age I was infatuated with everything that flew and that was man-made. I kept this fascination with airplanes going for most of my early modelling years and swore I would never build anything different if it didn’t include wings or rotor blades. That is…until one day when I was in my early teens and passed by the storefront of a hobby shop. For the first time, I saw a “mini landscape” (didn’t know the concept of dioramas back then) on display. It was Tamiya’s Flak 88 and Halftrack. The model was placed on a styrofoam base and was sprinkled with beach sand. I remember that vividly because the builder didn’t sift the sand so pieces of sea shells were visible while the diorama depicted a scene from the Belgian Ardennes! But what really intrigued me were the figures. Sure, like most kids from my day, I used to play with toy soldiers - but those were made like someone had chewed bubble gum, spat it out and molded the glop into a form, holding a toothpick for a rifle. The figures I was looking at were well sculpted and detailed. It captivated me. Was it possible that I could extend my boyhood play in to my adult hobby and continue to handle these mini-men without scrutiny or worse, becoming a Debilities Mentis of society? I walked in the store and five minutes later, walked back out with a Tamiya figure set under my arm. I found a new purpose in life! Painting figures. Well, let me tell you, didn’t go all that well! I was not very good at it and several bicycle trips to the store followed as I tried to refine my initial work. I left, to the shop owner’s dismay, many sweat prints on the glass door where I had pressed my nose and left eye against his window so I could have a “closer” look and study the exhibited figures. White metal figurines started to appear on the market and shortly thereafter, the “Verlinden era” made its entrance where I was personally in- volved for many years in producing resin figures. Since then there has never been any shortage to complete your diorama, no matter the subject. Figure painting is still considered difficult by many modelers and it scares many more away from trying. I am telling you - There is no need to be afraid to give it a try. Assembling and finishing figures is a process, just like any other modelling project. Once you painted one, good or bad, you learn and the next one will be better. There are many popular brands of figures that have been around for years, with Warriors as one of the leaders for quality resin figures with sculptors like John Rosengrant, Mike good, Rendall Patton, James Rice and Brian Stewart to name a few. Regardless of the talents of the sculp- tor, however, it’s in the finishing process that the real personality of each figure comes to life through the hands – and the soul – of the painter. No better way to bring a model to life than with the addition of one of these hand-painted pieces of art. When I look back, this industry has evolved into something fascinating where one can creatively express him or herself, capture history and project it onto a tiny platform with the help of figures. Figures also inject life into dioramas and last but not least figure painting is an art form and that by itself can be very rewarding and fun. For myself, I have evolved as a figure modeller and with time the bicycle trips gradually stopped. I will never forget the experience of discovering into something new a long time ago through his guiding hand that made me realize that there is so much more in this hobby that will give you satisfaction if you just give it a chance. So learn from my experience - go ahead, paint one! I did! Cheers!
