Brooklyn 99 has been cancelled after five seasons and fans are absolutely livid about it. The police sitcom, which stars Andy Samberg, Terry Crews and Andre Braugher, has become a cult favourite, but bosses at Fox have decided it’s time to give the show the axe. Since the show started, it has become the second longest-running live-action comedy series the company has had on its listings, next to the now defunct New Girl, which also ends this month. It was created by Parks and Recreation alum Dan Goor and Michael Shur, but has seen dwindling ratings since its 2013 launch due in part to its ever-changing schedule slot in the US. In the UK, it has found its home on E4, with Netflix picking up entire previous seasons after they aired. Its season five finale will now act as the series end, with Amy Santiago and Jake Peralta tying the knot in one last hurrah for our group of loveable misfit detectives. It will air in the US in ten days time. Brooklyn 99 has previously been praised for its all-inclusive cast, and its recent inclusion of a bisexual detective in Rosa Diaz, played by Stephanie Beatriz. Fans have been in uproar since the cancellation announcement was made, with a trending hashtag to ‘Renew 99’ quickly taking shape on Twitter. Squad, we love you. Melissa Fumero, who plays Amy Santiago, has been one of the first members of the cast to support the fan response, urging bosses to reconsider. She had previously told Entertainment Weekly: ‘Everyone wants to do at least one more season. Everybody feels like we’re not done. ‘There’s more story to tell, there’s more fun stuff to do with this incredible ensemble of characters.’ On the announcement of the cancellation, Stephanie wrote online: ‘Squad, we love you. Brooklyn 99 joins a number of shows that have been culled by the network today – including The Last Man on Earth, which is ending after four seasons, and The Mick, which has only lasted two outings. However, a hope for B99 is that the show will be picked up by another network or by an online streaming service in order for the story to continue. 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Canceled: Why the Show Is Ending (Again) Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been canceled by NBC, two years after it was saved by the network following its cancelation by Fox. The show will end after its shortest season yet, a 10 episode Season 8, set to air in fall 2021. In a statement from executive producer Dan Goor, he hinted that they had decided to stop the show now and give it a definite end rather than being abruptly canceled again as they were the first time. The EP wrote, with a fun reference to a running joke from the cop comedy: "Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honor the characters, the story and our viewers. I know some people will be disappointed it's ending so soon, but honestly, I'm grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape." The show's ratings have stayed fairly steady since moving from Fox to NBC. The last two seasons on Fox got an average total viewership of 2.87 and 2.71 million respectively, compared to 3.11 and 2.69 million for the first two NBC seasons. This, however, makes it one of NBC's lowest-performing scripted shows. Per TVSeriesFinale, the show was 14th in the ratings out of the 19 scripted shows NBC aired in the 2019-2020 season. The fact that it got renewed at all may be down to the lack of successful comedies NBC currently has. The three sitcoms that beat Brooklyn Nine- Nine in the ratings have either already ended (the Will and Grace reboot and The Good Place ) or are ending in 2021 ( Superstore , whose season finale is airing on March 25.) The ongoing conversations about so-called "copaganda" probably did not help the show's chances of being renewed. The police comedy has frequently been criticized after the Black Lives Matter protests, something that has led to much soul searching on the show, and episodes based on racial profiling in the past. This was something discussed by show star Andy Samberg, who told People in July. "We're taking a step back," he said. "And the writers are all rethinking how we're going to move forward, as well as the cast. We're all in touch and kind of discussing how you make a comedy show about police right now, and if we can find a way of doing that that we all feel morally okay about." Brooklyn Nine-Nine was first canceled in 2018, with the show being picked up by The Peacock Network the following day. We were trying to create a more cohesive program, and scheduling Brooklyn would prevent us from promoting something new.

Directed by Marc Webb for Fox Searchlight Pictures, (500) Days of Summer was promoted with the tagline ‘Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t’. This presents the film as an unconventional romantic comedy in at least three ways: Firstly, it suggests that these two characters will not actually end up together, which challenges the idea of the romcom couple as ‘meant to be’. Secondly, it presents the possibility that audiences might not get the happy ending we usually expect from comedy. And finally, the tagline casts the boy, rather than the girl, in the role as yearning romantic, thereby challenging the traditional gender roles of heterosexual relationships. So how did audiences respond to this film? At the time of writing, it has been rated by 75,716 IMDb users, and has an average score of 8.0 out of 10. This clearly suggests a favourable reception, but the IMDb reviews also offer qualitative data that can shed further light on how the film has been evaluated. What kinds of criteria are in operation? What elements do reviewers highlight as important for their experiences of the film? How is the film seen to fail for some viewers? Drawing on previous studies of romantic comedy, the analysis will consider how these particular audience members articulated their responses to (500) Days of Summer, as well as their positions as reviewers.
