FSX/Prepar3D : 7AK Akutan, , USA

Airport: 7AK - Akutan Airport Location: , Alaska USA Creator: Wayne Roberts ([email protected]) Revised: Conrad F. Staeheli, CH-8807 Freienbach, Switzerland

This is a NEW airport.

Location: Akutan Airport (IATA: KQA[2], ICAO: PAUT, FAA LID: 7AK) is a state owned, public use airport serving Akutan, a city on Akutan Island in the Aleutians East Borough of the U.S. state of Alaska. The airport is located on , 6 miles (10 km) east of Akutan Island. Scheduled air service is subsidized by the program.

History: The airport was opened in 2012. Akutan was previously served by amphibious airplane service to Akutan Seaplane Base, located on Akutan Island, however, in 2012 operator PenAir announced that they would retire their Grumman Goose aircraft and as a result the traditional airport on Akun Island was built to serve Akutan. The new airport is connected to Akutan by a hovercraft.

Boats and amphibious aircraft, hovercraft, or helicopter are the only means of transportation into and out of Akutan. A 200-foot (61 m) dock and a small boat mooring basin are available. Meanwhile the Hovercraft has been sold due to high costs, an Helicopter-Service has been established by Maritime Helicopters. offers daily flights from Unalaska/Dutch Harbour (ICAO: PADU) to Akutan (7AK, ICAO: PAUT) and back again. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akutan_Airport

Changes were made based on 2012 construction plans. Custom models have been added.

Creation: Created with Airport Design Editor 9x™ by ScruffyDuck Software using current FAA documentation and Google Earth™ measurement, although currently (Nov 29 2017) the Airport is not depicted on Google Earth™, this package offers a replacement for FSX's or Prepar3D stock airport. All these enhancements are as close to the real airport as I can get with stock library objects and with the limited Information available. Photographs just show the Airport from a far distance, so no exact details are available! This is just a very simple scene, far away from ORBX-Standards!

Meanwhile I (Conrad F. Staeheli) was able to obtain a Satellite Image of 7AK Akutan Airport, Alaska from “Virtual Earth” which seems to be more up-to-date then Google!

Tools used: GMapCatcher V0.8.0.5 (not very stable!) and SAS Planet.

***Installation****

This installation includes just one folder.

Please make sure there are no other 7AK AFCADs in any other scenery folder - they will conflict with each other.

To install the scenery folder take the 7AK folder (scenery and texture) and navigate to your FSX\AddonScenery or Prepar3D\AddonScenery folder and drop the folder into it.

When you start FSX or Prepar3D activate the scenery as you would any other, either with Scenery Config Editor (SCE) or from within FSX or Prepar3D.

To Uninstall:

Exit Flight Simulator X or Prepar3D and remove the 7AK Scenery folder from the FSX\AddonScenery or Prepar3D\AddonScenery\scenery folder.

Restart FSX/Prepar3D—this will create a new airport index using the original stock airport(s)

A note by the reviser Conrad F. Staeheli: This Airport fits nicely into Aerosoft’s “Dutch Harbour” Scenery, created by FSDG and available from here: https://www.aerosoft.com/en/fsxp3d/flight-simulator-x/sceneries/376/fsdg-dutch-harbor-x

But when I made my first flight from Dutch Harbour to Akutan, I found in Wayne Roberts first release of this Airport (26th August 2013), that the ’s where pointing in a wrong direction. So I decided to make a rework of this scenery and corrected the headings of the runways, I added also the current Approaches, as published by the FAA, to the scenery.

Please note, I am not a Scenery Designer, in fact, I know very little about it. In the distribution, you will also find the Project Files and other relevant files for Airport Design Editor (ADE) available from: http://www.scruffyduck.org

Once again: this work was initially done by Wayne Roberts, so the credits go to him!!! I just made some changes to conform with real Runway orientation and added the Approaches.

Please note: The in the ADE Project integrated Approach is currently not working! The reason is the following:

This is for information purposes.

 Any Waypoint that nest inside the airport data record will show as a Terminal_Waypoint (blue color in ADE and the GPS).  Any Waypoint that nest outside the airport data record will show as a Route type Waypoint (magenta color in ADE and the GPS).

When you import a xml such as your list of Waypoints, ADE does not have the ability to know if they belong in the airport record or outside the airport record. At present any waypoints that are imported get listed outside the airport record which causes them to become route type waypoints instead of Terminal_waypoints.

When watching your tutorial I got the feeling that you need to do further work on your waypoint code utility but the problem is more related to ADE.

What needs to be done in ADE is add a selection window prior to any importing of a VOR, NDB or Waypoint that will set the Navaid inside or outside the airport record. If we had the ability to select a box that ask do you want these Navaids inside or outside the airport record then your imported waypoints would all list as Terminal_Waypoints (blue in color) and those are for building on approaches.

Source of this information is Jim Vile from FSDeveloper (sadly he deceased recently RIP, thanks for all of your work!!!)

The above story is exactly what happened to me. Because of that, ADE does not include my waypoints in the compilation, so they are missing in the GPS. I'm working on that matter to solve this!

Please don’t send me any E-Mails, the reason is a simple one! A few years ago, when my main computer crashed, I lost all of my Access-data to gain access to my E-Mail-Account. But this was at this time also a good reason to stop E-Mailing, because since I was active on several Flightsimmer-Websites, I got flooded with SPAM-Mails!!!
