The drop of welcome rain overnight just freshen the grass and the trade. First quality freshly calved heifers were in strong demand with the sale topping at £1920 on behalf of Messrs RN and D Jenkin of Manaccan , Helston with other heifers from the same vendor selling at £1900 (twice) and £1880. Cows topped at £1850 for a 2nd Calver “Bocaddon Classic AE Stella” sold as part of another good consignment from regular vendors Messrs SR Gilbert and Sons from Sheepwash who sold other cows to £1800 and a good 6th calver at £1320 providing a consignment average of over £1600. There was a good showing of quality freshly calved heifers and cows and more are needed to meet the demand. Second quality sorts had a slightly easier trade with stale cows selling well on behalf of Mr Olver of St Austell. A shortage of in calf heifers topped at £1180 for a July calver from Colin Davey Delabole, with heifers due in the winter months and/or just served meeting a healthy trade on behalf of Will Jones from Crediton. Today saw excellent consignments of maiden heifers forward and like the milkers quality was rewarded with a strong trade. The Willsbro consignment of 9 and 10 month old heifers included well grown and well-bred heifers that topped at £1350 for a pair of heifers both from the famous “Rachel” family. This was closely followed by a smart showy heifer from the “Amazing” family selling at £1200. Two heifers from the world renown “Roxy” family created great interest and sold at £1020. The average of the consignment was just shy of £1000. A lovely run of Friesian type heifers from Messrs James of Penzance topped at £580 with 8 month old maidens from Will Jones of Crediton selling at £610. A fantastic entry of yearling heifers from Messrs SJ and SA Thorne of Umberleigh attracted a crowd of buyers to bid on these well-bred and well farmed heifers. A flying trade saw 5/6 month old heifers top at £620 for a group of 6 heifers. The consignment ran down to 2 month old calves and averaged an impressive £519. A 38 month Pedigree Hereford bull sold at £1150 on behalf of the Radford herd of the Jenkins family Launceston. Some of the lambs today were showing the dry weather being lean and open coated and were more difficult to sell. However the well fleshed soppy lambs were still 235 to a top of 241p for a pen of 44kgs £106 from Rod Wood, Forda, Thornbury followed by Rod Evely, Petersmarland who realized 238p £107 for his 2 pens of 45kgs. 18 pens realized £106 and over to a top of £110.50 for 2 pens of 49.4 kgs from Messrs MJ Ashton & Partners, Parkham followed by Rod Wood, Thornbury £110. 237 DRAFT EWES & RAMS Smaller entry with nearly all heavy and light weight ewes on offer and a steady trade was met. ¾ meat ewes sold to a top of £75 for 4 vendors. Overall top call of the day was £475 for the pick of some 4 month old stirks in from GCA Masters of St Breward, Cornwall with 3 month old Blue stirks from Messrs Petherick of Kilkhampton hitting £445 (x 3). Heifer stirks topped at £400 in from Keybridge Farms with others between £350 - £375 for bunches of 3 month old heifers from Messrs Colwill & Bellairs. Baby Blue calves topped at £370 for a superb 1st quality calf in from Messrs Isaac of Cornish View, Hollacombe with Martin Gorst and family of North Petherwin close up at £335 for a group of 3, 39 day olds. Messrs Cann of Highampton saw his best at £355 with the pick of Blue Bulls from Colin Stevens at £345. Top Charolais bulls came in from Ann Jose & family of North Tamerton whilst Limousin Bulls topped at £325 for Messrs Nancekivell of Kilkhampton, £318 for Angela Dilling, £310 for Messrs Bloomfield of Altarnun, £308 for S&M Furse of Ashwater and £300 for the best of 4 from the Murrain family of Lyford. Angus Bulls were in short supply today with Nigel Gear of Newton Tracey topping at £255 with Messrs Heddon & Son of Weare Gifford at £230 (x2) In the heifer pens Blue’s topped at £350 with Messrs Western close up at £285 & the Smale family of North Petherwin at £2370. Mike Greenaway of Tetcott hit £260 with Mike & Pearl Hopper of Whitstone reaching £258. Charoais heifers went to a top call of £273 for Messrs Jose with S&M Furse of Ashwater taking top call in the Limousin pens at £245. Trade for Holstein bulls was flying with the best stronger types at £192 for Ross & Nicky Heddon of Bideford. Messrs Gilbert of Sheepwash sent in 4 Black & White bulls well at £124, Messrs Murrain at £110 with other very young Holsteins from Jeff Endacott to £97 and nothing much less than £70. Speaking after the sale James Morrish of Kivells said “A full market of calves saw plenty of buying power around the Salering pushing the best under 42 day calves to an average of £349 for the top 30 Bulls. Potholes – the potholes between the Village Green and Tresarrett were tended on 23 October. A30 – the verge obscuring visibility on the Blisland exit has been trimmed. Keybridge – it has been reported that two drains flooded at Keybridge following South West Water works in Tregenna Road. 165/14 HIGHWAYS & FOOTPATHS Kerrow crossroads – the potholes are always full of water 2 Blocked drains – outside the main entrance to Trewardale (main route into the village) A30 - visibility is not only being impaired by the grass but also by the hedge vegetation growing out towards the road. 166/14 MINUTES It was proposed by Councillor Miss Meads and seconded by Councillor Greenaway that the minutes of 9 October 2014 are accepted, approved and signed by the Chairman.
