I would like to thank all of the many families of this county that have contributed, their love ones stories, and personal combat story for this book.
This first introduction of the Baldwin County Veterans book will be a continuing project in volumes and set alphabetically. Due to many veteran pictures missing in this first volume I will be still collecting war stories, and pictures in or out of uniform every three months to replace or enhance the current information that is available. I will expect war time weddings and how this ties back to Baldwin County. Please name WW I, WW II, Army, Navy, Air Force Vietnam, Korean War, Desert Storm, Sea Battle, Ground Combat, Names of Battleships & names of War Planes and Remember to all service families. The Bay Minette Archive building will receive your veteran picture(s) and information.
The old picture of the World War I Alabama Rainbow Division tents that camp over night before marching to Montgomery, Alabama belong to my grandfather, and remains in the Matthews family.

About Campaign Medals for the United States Armed Forces in World War II
On December 7,1942, when the Japanese attacked, Pearl Harbor, the United States became part of the Allied effort in the War that had been going on since 1938. World War II was a global conflict on a scale which mankind had never before even imagined. Forty Million lives were lost before the first capitulation of the Avis powers on September 2, 1945.
Armed Forces of the United States served all over the world, and it was decided that medals would be awarded for service in one of three carefully bounded and defined areas. The three areas taken to gather encompass the entire globe. The different Campaign Medals, and a World War II Victory Medal were issued for service in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II.
A Bronze Campaign Star Medal was authorized to be worn on the Ribbon Bar of the Medal for service in a specified campaign. A Silver Star Medal is worm in lieu of five bronze stars. A Bronze Arrowhead Medal was authorized by the Army to be worn on the campaign medals to denote invasion participation. The Navy authorized the wearing of a small Marine Corps device, to indicate naval personnel serving with the Marine Corps. unites.
Campaign Medals
The Victory Medal, World War I. This medal was authorized in 1919, for awards to officers and enlisted men of the United States Armed forces, who had an honorable record for active duty between April, 1917 to November 1918 or for service with the Allied Expeditionary Force in European Russia November 1,1918 to August 5,1919 and in Siberia November 23,1918 to April 1, 1920.
Designed by James E. Fraser, the obverse shows a female winged figure with a shield and sword symbolic of Victory.

A unique feature of the Victory Medal was the adoption of clasps to be worn on the suspension ribbon of the medal. The Army adopted thirteen battle clasps to indicate participation in a major campaign, and a Defensive Sector clasps. The also created five service clasp with the name of countries – they were awarded to persons not entitled to battle clasps. These clasps are worn on the medal ribbon, and are represented by small Bronze Stars on the ribbon bar.
The Navy also authorized suspension service clasps for Navy and Marine Corps personnel, though members of these units that served with the Army would receive the Battle Clasps, for their combat service. The Navy clasps, were issued for service with a particular type of ship or unit, or for service in a particular area. This is indicated by what is on the medal bar. They are different from the Army clasp, being wider in design and with a rope border.
A small Maltese Cross in Bronze was authorized for Navy and Marine Corps. Personnel to, indelicate service with the A.E.F. in France that did not include entitlement to a battle clasps.
Troops of the Victorious Allies were stationed as Occupation Troops in Germany, and certain area of Austria – Hungary after the Armistice was signed. American troops stayed in the service for a long period, not leaving until 1923 and appropriate Medal were4 awarded.
The United States World War II Badges and Medals
The World War II Victory Medal was awarded to all Military personal for service between December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946. This medal was established by an Act of Congress on July 6, 1945 { Public Law 135- 79th. Congress} , and promulgated by Section V. War Department Bulletin 12 1945.
The medal was designed by Mr. Thomas H. Jones and approved by the Secretary of War on February 5, 1946. The Congressional authorization for the World War II Victory Medal included members of the Armed Forces of the Government of the Philippines Islands. It also specified the ending date would be the date of the termination of hostilities as proclaimed by the President Truman officially ended the state of hostilities on December 31,1946.

Army of Occupation Medal
Authorized in 1945, this is awarded for thirty days consecutive service in any of the occupied territories after World War II. Clasps inscribed with the words, Germany or Japan were authorized to be worn with the medals. The Berlin Airlift Device was also authorized for personnel for 90 consecutive days of service with a unite credited with participation in the Berlin Aircraft between June 26, 1948 and September 30, 1949.
The obverse shows the Reimage Bridge abutments, symbolic of Europe, above this are the words. “ Army Occupation.” The reverse shows Mount Fujiyama, symbolic of Asia.
Occupation Service

American Campaign Medals
Authorized on November 6, 1942, and awarded to all members of the armed forces who between December 7, 1941 and March 2, 1946 served on land or aboard certain ships for one years within the continental limits of the United States or thirty days service outside the continental limits of the United States but within the American Theater of Operations.

European – African – Middle Eastern Campaign Medals
Authorized on November 6,1942, and awarded to all members of the Armed Forces of the United States who served in the prescribed area or aboard certain ships for thirty days period between December 7,1941 and November 8, 1945. The smaller craft, and troops with an airplane overhead and aboard in flight.
Asiatic - Pacific Campaign Medal
Authorized on November 6, 1942, and awarded to all service members of the armed forces of the United States for thirty days of active service in the prescribed arena and aboard military ships between December 7, 1941 and November 8, 1945. The obverse shows troops landing in a tropical scene, with palm trees, ships in the background, planes overhead and inscription that reads: Asiatic – Pacific Campaign. Unfortunately, the custom of awarding bars indicating the campaign or service as used on the Victory Medal of World War I was not continued.
Army Occupation Medal

Occupation Services

Women’s Army Corps Service Medals
Authorized in 1943 and awarded for service in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps between July 20, 1942 and August 31, 1943 and for service in the Women’s Army Corps from September 1, 1943 to September 2, 1945. The obverse shows the head of Athena, Goddess of Victory and Wisdom, and a sheathed sword, crossed with oak leaves and palm branch and the inscription, “Women’s Army Corps.”
The Korean War 1950 – 1953
The Korean War began with the North Korean Invasion of South Korea on June 27, 1950. The United States decided to send troops to aid the South Korean, and on July 7, 1950. The United Nation adopted a resolution that would make this conflict a test of the powers of the U.N. to Italy and repel aggression against any member states.
China entered the War in November to save the North Koreans, who had been beaten and lost most of their territory.
In September 1950, the Korean War had reached a stalemate and became a war of the trenches and out-post, similar to World War I. The situation for two more desperate, bloody and costly years until a truce was signed on June 27, 1953.

Korean Service Medal
Authorized on November 8, 1950 and awarded to members of the United States armed forces for thirty consecutive days of service in Korea between June 27, 1950 and July 27, 1954. Also awarded certain ships in Korean waters, units engaged in, aerial missions over Korea, and units, in direct support of the war effort. The obverse has a Korean gateway encircled by the inscription: “Korean Service” a series of a Campaign Stars were authorized for award with this medal.
World War I & World War II
The drawing of “All War’s” was world’s great powers, assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies {based on the Triple Entente of the United Kingdom - British Empire, France and the Russian Empire versus the Central Powers of Germany and Austria – Hungary. Although Italy was a member of the Triple Alliance alongside Germany and Austria – Hungary, it did not join the Central Powers, as Austria – Hungary had taken the offensive, against the term of the alliance. These alliances were reorganized and expanded as more nations entered the war: Italy, Japan and the United States joined the Allies, while the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria joined the Central Powers.
The trigger for the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Principe in Sarajevo on July 28, 1914. This set off a diplomatic crisis when Austria – Hungary delivered an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia, and entangled international alliances formed over the previous decades were invoked. Within weeks, the major powers were at war and the conflict soon spread around the world.
On July 28, 1914 the Austro-Hungarians declared was on Serbia and subsequently invaded. As Russia mobilized in support of Serbia, Germany invaded neutral Belgium and Luxembourg before moving towards France, leading the United Kingdom to declare war on Germany. After the German march on Paris was halted, what became known as the Western Front settled into a battle of attrition, with a trench line that would change little until 1917. Meanwhile, on the Eastern Front, the Russian army was successful against the Austro –Hungarians, but was stopped in its invasion of East Prussia by the Germans. I November 1914, the Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers, opening fronts in the Caucasus, Mesopotamia and the Sinai.
Italy joined the Allies in 1915 and Bulgaria joined the Central Powers in the same year, while Romania joined the Allies in 1916, followed by the United States in 1917.

The Russian government collapsed in March 1917, and a subsequent revolution in November brought the Russians to terms with the Central Powers via the Treaty of Brest Litovsk, which constituted a massive German victory. After a stunning German offensive along the Western Front in the spring of 1918, the Allies rallied and drove back the Germans in a series of successful offensives. On November 4, 1918, the Austro- Hungarian empire agreed to an armistice, and Germany, which
had its own trouble with revolutionaries, agreed to an armistice on November 11, 1918, ending the war in victory for the Allies.
Baldwin County Alabama Local Draft Board

The men from, Baldwin Co. was called up into the United States Army and begin training for services. They selected through a county wide lottery system held in Washington D.C. last Friday. The Baldwin Co. exemption board has not yet received the official list of the names given below. They were the first numbers drawn as sent out by the Associated Press. From this list were eighty – eighty men drawn.
The numbers as given below are not in the regular order and it is impossible to give same in exact order until the official list has been received by the county authorities. As soon as it is received by them however, notice will be mailed to each of the men drawn.
The examination will be taken up in the order in which the numbers corresponding to names were drawn. If the quota is obtained before all men are examined the last on the list will be dismissed until the next call.

Town Officials to Enforce Black-outs Laws, Regulations for Willful Violation in Future not to be tolerated. Story from our local newspaper @1943.
In order to cooperate with the “Air Raid Wardens” and other civilian defense workers who have devoted much time in perfecting an “Air Raid,” organization here in Bay Minette Town Council voted Tuesday night to publish the “Ordinance’’ blackout regulations and enforce them to the limit in future blackouts.
The ordinance is carried on page seven of this issue and provides penalties to those violating commands of the Air Raids Wardens. Mayor James Faulkner, Sr. said that any citizen, irrespective of who he will be punished under the town ordinance if he or she violates the rules and thus endangers safety of all citizens.
John Chason, Sr. and Charles A. Bodden are in charge of the local setup and by weeks of training have an efficient organization that have given the time necessary to learn the rules and regulations. In the last test of the blackout they reported a few instances of willful violations to the air raid rules. In the future such actions will not be tolerated, it has been pointed out. It is not known when the next raid will be but these precautions are being taken so all will be readied. History Note: In the for ground in this picture you see the Tall Water Tank built about 1901, Sheriff Department over - looking still today location. It was said by many of the older citizens of our town that a mesh wire screen was laid over the top of the tank and a special cover was in place during these ‘Air Raids” practice drills.

Hometown was Bay Minette, Alabama. He played Football at the Bay Minette High School as Captain. He graduated and went to work at the Newport Industry. In 1942 he joined the Army studied and trained with the 25th Armored Engineer Battalion, later assigned to the 6th Armored Division. He toured the European , Normandy, France, Central Europe, Rhineland’s. He was mustered out in 1945. Battles & Campaigns received the European- African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/5 Battle Stars. Baggett Everett US Navy Hometown was Bay Minette, Alabama. At the time this picture was published in the local newspaper in 1951 1st Class Baggett was stationed at Norfolk, Va. Then later transferred to Pearl Harbor. His parents are Mr. & Mrs. J.W. Baggett of the Pedidio Community.

Battles & Campaigns: The Asiatic-Pacific Theater w/1 Bronze Star, for fighting in the Guadalcanal Zone, Northern Solomon Islands. The Philippine Medal w/1 Bronze Star – The Purple Heart, Presidential Unit of Citation w/1 Bronze Star, The 1st Marine Division Reinforcement Medal. Baron Florence Rothe US Womens Army Hometown was Boston, Mass. She entered the Army in 1942 till April 1946. She trained at Baltimore and later to South Caroline at Fort Jackson. Overseas duty was in the South Pacific Theater – New Zealand. She separated from the 18th Naval Hospital from Camp Selby. She is buried in the Bay Minette Cemetery.
Bass William J. US Army Hometown Stapleton, Alabama in August 19,1942 Bass had joined the Army. He was stationed at Fort McClellan, Al. He ranked Private 1st Class and trained at the Headquarters Company of the 55st of the Parachute Infantry Regiment. He trained with the Light Truck Drivers and awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. Becker Earl Von Doen US Army Hometown Bay Minette, Alabama. In December 9,1943 he had joined the Army and stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala. He trained for the Army Postal Clerk Technician 4th Grade of the 236th Company. He later was stationed at the Quartermaster School in Camp Lee, Va. After leaving the Army Becker returned to Bay Minette where he worked at the local Post Office till he retired. A Wounded Flight Nurses Duty… The wounded particularly praise the flight nurse although not neglecting the rest of the medics. They see more of the nurses for one or two are constantly with them and the flight nurse are in complete charge on the trips back home.
From Tokyo the patients are flown to Hawaii from off the battle fields within 24 hours rest scheduled trips. Short stops are often made at Wake Island or some other island between Japan and Hawaii a C – 54 Aircraft with a top load of around 30 men are utilized mainly on these ruins from Japan and Hawaii. For the journey from Hawaii to Fairfield – Suisum Air Force Base near San Francisco, California. Larger aircraft such as the C-74 Globe Maters are used to supplement the C-54’s. And the larger plans make the trips in from 10 to 11 hours and the C- 74’s have hauled as high as 74 soldiers.
Another 24 hour rest is scheduled at Fairfield – Suisun and then the patients are flown to a continental base from which they are shuttered to their assigned General Hospitals Base to which the patients are usually taken for the shuttle include Brookley, Kelly, AFB, TX. Lowery AFB, Colorado, Westover AFB, Mass, Boiling AFB, IN Washington D.C., and Biggs AFB, TX. From these bases the Mats Air Evacuation squadrons taken them to local general hospitals specializing in their needs or as close to their homes as possible. Most of the southern men, arriving at Brookley except those needing specializing care taken to Memphis and Little Rock, Tenn.
On these air evacuation flights the nurses really earn their pay. In complete charge of the medical part and also take on duties of a Champlain adjutant and Red Cross. Many of the flight nurses have worked in the hospitals on a regular shift before taking off work duties. Some go all the way on the 38 hours flight from Japan to Hawaii and there are not rest stops for the crew for this continental destination. Note from the author.. History of my military service in World War II
I was born in Bay Minette, Alabama. I attended High School here. Life here was laid back and peaceful during the years leading up to World War II. Bay Minette

For entertainment we had a movie theater called The Rex Theater were you could movies for a quarter and Carnivals came to town on a Fall Fair Grounds. The young workers pick up potatoes and worked around the Old Potatoes Shed for summer money.
We were at my Grandmother’s house on Sunday December 7,1941 when all of our lives were turned upside down. That Monday morning at the High School we all gathered in the auditorium to hear President Franklin Roosevelt declare war on Japan and Germany. Boy’s that was old enough was signed in the Armed Forces and for the ones that was too young their parents to signed them in. Those 17 or 18 were aromatically drafted. I was sent to Fort McClellan, to be inducted. From there I was sent to Camp Shelby in Mississippi and then to Camp Blanding, Florida for basic training.
Basic training was at Fort Meade, Maryland. They loaded 18,000 of us onto the USS Queen Mary which had been converted to a Military Troop Ship. The bunks were stacked 4 high. Once on board we set sail to Europe. We saw our first danger just out of Glasgow, Scotland. They said German U-Boats were in the area. American destroyers and the Royal Airforce were dropping depth charges. From Glasgow we were sent by train to England.
From Southampton we crossed the channel into France. We stayed in Le Have France for 5 days. Very poor health condition we all had to be sprayed with DDT Dust had many shots and the food was hominy grits, and bread.
We set up a military government in Germany where we checked communication and protection. After a month my outfit was sent to Arles, France where we put up a tent city. Later we got news of our troop going to Japan. This was during to time of President Truman and the delivering of the Atomic Bomb. Some of my troop made the trip back to states on the USS Mahoney which was a Liberty Ship. We arrived in to the port of New York and that Statue of Liberty never looked so good. I mustered out of the Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Battles and Campaigns were The European, African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/2 Bronze Stars for action and Army Occupation in Northern France, Rhineland’s Theater, the Good Conduct Medal, the German Army Occupation Medal, the WW II Victory Medal, and a Combat Infantry Badge. Then in 1938, I was Gideon Bearer for Company D, Alabama ROTC at the University of Alabama.
Upon graduating from the University of Alabama on May 26,1941. I was commissioned as 2nd. Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserved and entered Active duty June 27,1941.
After service in Philadelphia and Texas I volunteered in August, 1941 for Parachute School. After a brief tour with the 506th Parachute Infantry, I completed my training at Fort Benning’s Georgia. There is no way to describe parachuting. It must be experienced. Upon completion of my training I was
assigned to the 504th Paratrooper Infantry, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Braggs, N. Carolina.
I served overseas from May 1943 until Nov. 1945. During my service in Europe, I received 6 Bronze Stars and a Head for invasions into Sicily, Naples, Foggia, Rome Arena, Rhineland’s the Ardennes { Battle of the Bulge} and Central Europe. I was awarded the Militates Willems Order Medal in Holland, Belgium Citation {504th Parachute Infantry}. I also received the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. The group I was in was a Garrison in Berlin, and in Germany. I retired as Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Infantry Reserved in 1963.

General Owen began his military career when he enlisted in the US Marines Corps in 1943, entered service at Paris Island, South Carolina, after which he attended and graduated from Demolition School at Camp Lejeune, N. Carolina. He served as Assault Squad leader with the 5th Marine Division in the Pacific Theater and Japan, until 1946, and served as Platoon leader,
Battery B, 711th AAA Gun Battalion from April to September 1950. He was promoted to first lieutenant in August 1950, and entered federal service with the 711th Anti - Aircraft Artillery {AAA} Gun Battalion on September 4,1950.
General Owen served as Executive Officer Battery B 711th AAA Gun Battalion until his assignment to the 61st Field Artillery in Korea in July 1951 and served as Forward Observer and Liaison Officer with the 61st Field Artillery until he was released from active duty in August 1952.
In September 1952 he was assigned as Commander Battery A 10th AA Battalion {automatic weapons} and was promoted to Captain in 1953. He served as Operations Officer 108th AA Battalion from 1954 to 1959 and he was promoted to Major in April 1957.
He was in the inactive reserve from 1959 to 1962 and was then assigned to the 226th AA Group where he served until assigned as Battalion Commander 2nd Battalion 278th AA Battalion. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on May 23,1967.
On December 1,1969 General Owen was assigned to the 226th Field Depot and promoted to Colonel on February 24,1971. He served as Deputy Commander and Commander of the 226th Field Depot until October 7,1975 when he was assigned as Deputy Commander Troops Command, Alabama Army National Guard. He was promoted and Federally recognized as Brigadier General on February 6,1976. He

Military Memories and Service Time.
I was born in Latham, Alabama on July 19,1918. I was educated in Baldwin Co. School Grades from one through five were in a two room schoolhouse here in the Community of Latham. Grades six through nine at, Stockton High School twelve through in Bay Minette High School. I attended Daphne State Normal School in that city and gradate in 1938. I began teaching 5th grade at Elberta Consolidated School on that town that fall and was there for two
years. For a year and half I taught 6th grade at Loxley. During the latter four years I was attending Livingston State Teachers College during that summer.
In December 1941 I joined the Unite State Naval Reserve and under the Navy’s V 7 program was allowed to return to Livingston to complete my B S Degree in

In the fall of 1942 I entered Midshipman School in New York City and was commission as Ensign USNR to the South Pacific area to my assignment on the USS President Adams , APA 19, an amphibious assault Transport. IN Noumea, New Caledonia April 1943 and remained aboard until December 23,1945 when I was relived and traveled to New Orleans, LA.

The Oldest Veteran Tells His Experience By: Robert Thompson of Stockton, Alabama. Copied from Local Newspaper April 9, 1915
Robert Thompson of Stockton, Alabama who is perhaps the oldest living veteran was seen in Bay Minette last Friday to collect his pension money from the Confederate War.
While here a representative of the newspaper related many inter views with Mr. Thompson facts connected with his experience as the oldest living resident at that time in our county of Baldwin.
Mr. Thompson has been a resident of Baldwin County since birth which occurred in September 1820 making him about ninety-five years of age. Mr. Thompson state’s he lived a very careful life avoiding stress. He says he has never chewed tobacco or smoked a pie or drank as much as a quart of whiskey in all of his life.
He was born near Montgomery Hill north of Stockton, Alabama. He is the father of thirteen children at that time some was still living. During the war at Mexico he served as a soldier there without being captured. He passed through the entire period with a scratch. He says he was captured and shot as a spy but friends that new he saved his life near old Claiborne. Mr. Thompson old horse and saddle had a revolver taken from him there. By fleeing and reaching the old stage road to Blakeley that soldier let him go. He remembers some of the Indians that his mother said that yellow fever and inhabited that old town.
After the threat of Yellow Fever the old mail boat called the Neptune of Captain George Bryant { who became county Sheriff in Daphne, Ala. 1901 } followed up pass Stockton to delivered mail. Then Stockton grew rapidly and soon about thirty new

he was just a young boy and he said, he knew Mr. Larkin the outlaw that held up the stage coach north of Stockton, Alabama.

Alabama National Guards of Bay Minette Alabama
The constitution of the United States calls for a militia for each state. It is the opinion of many who read interprets the Constitution of the United States that it was to satisfy the original states because they did not trust the central government for protection. In most towns and cities in the state of Alabama there is usually an Army National Guard of Bay Minette with no exception.
The present National Guard Unit was originally established about 1946. The original meeting place was at the corner of Hoyle Avenue and 1st First Street. The building at the time had a second floor, and the National Guard Unit would meet on Monday evening for drills. Summer camp was usually held in June or July. This was a time when the unit would go to a military post and train for military

The original Commanding Officer of this unit was Captain Leroy Ruple. The executive officer was 1st Lieutenant David P. Mason and the 1st Sergeant was James Lindsey. The 1st unit was assigned to the 711th AAA Gun Battalion, 226th Anti-Aircraft Group with their headquarters in Mobile Alabama.
In 1946 the First National Guard building was erected on 3rd Street. This was the home of Battery B 711th AAA Gun Battalion at the time it was called active duty was during the Korean War. When this unit was called to active duty, the Commanding Officer was Cleo H. Owens 1st Lt. James R. Owen was the Executive Officer. Second Lt. Bruce Beveridge, Jr. who was the Platoon leader. Warrant Officer James Lindsey was the unit administrator. Mr. Clive V. Mott was the 1st Sergeant. Approximately 100 officers and men made up this one unit from the small city of Bay Minette, Alabama.
