It was transformed in the 1980s from a working port and industrial area to a harbourside leisure, entertainment and convention precinct. It is transforming again with the International Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICC) now complete, and the ICC Sydney Hotel, Darling Square development and The Ribbon at various stages of construction. The NSW Government has owned Darling Harbour for over 100 years, initially because of its strategic importance to growing Sydney and, more recently, because of its civic purpose and international role.
