2020-21 Packing Guide for Boarding Students

Every student room will be furnished with a bed, desk with drawers, desk chair, and dresser. Every room has at least one closet for hanging clothes. Bathrooms are semi-private; each bathroom will be shared by two to six students.

Please note: Students are not permitted to hold prescription or over-the-counter medications in their room. The school nurse dispenses all medications and supplements.

Personal Items Dorm rooms can not be locked; please do not bring expensive items or large sums of money to School. Students may hold up to $50 cash in their room. Applewild highly recommends pre-paid debit cards, so that students and families are able to have good conversations about spending habits and allowances. If lost or stolen, families are responsible for canceling and renewing debit cards and credit cards.

 Devices All boarding students are allowed to have ONE cell phone and an additional ONE any of the following devices: iPad, one computer or tablet, one iPod, one other gaming device. All devices will be registered with the Director of Technology and turned in to the dorm technology closet each night for charging and safe storage until the following afternoon. An additional MP3 player or e-Reader that does NOT connect to WiFi or Cellular Networks is allowed for students who wish to read or listen to previously downloaded books, music or podcasts at night.

Applewild School does not require the use of technology during the academic day, but students may bring a laptop or tablet to the Ansin Academic Building for academic purposes.

 Technology use Use of cell phones and/or mobile devices for social communications is disruptive to our educational environment. They are not to be used during the school day except on rare occasions when under the supervision of a teacher, they are used for instructional purposes.

Devices should not become a distraction during school programming where the student is present as a spectator or engaged in a competition, school plays, and other school sanctioned events. During these events, devices should be away and out of sight. We reserve the right to confiscate a device if we feel it is a hindrance to proper student engagement.

 “No Tech” Orientation Period In order to facilitate meaningful interactions between the boarding students and allow the School to register each student’s cell phone information, the students will turn in their cell phones at registration. These will be returned at the end of the second weekend of school. For midyear students, this process will take place for one week. During this period, students are allowed to contact home using Skype, a calling card, or email.

Dress Code

This list is provided for packing and planning purposes only; please refer to the Family Handbook for more detailed information. Laundry will be done once per week, so having enough clothes to get through the week is essential.

The philosophy of Applewild's Code is that appropriate attire reflects students' readiness to learn and shows respect for the learning environment. The Applewild curriculum demands much walking and cross-campus travel; therefore, comfort, safety, and respect for oneself and others are the primary goals. Clothing should be in keeping with the values and educational pursuits of the school. Any writing or pictures on clothing must not contain offensive themes or advertise merchandise not suitable for minors. Students are expected to present themselves in clothing that is clean, in good repair and that fits well - not excessively baggy or tight.
