Skirt & - Sewn Garment Kaydi Zoske Hardin County Tipton-Grant Toppers 6th Grade - Junior Member Class #10420 2nd Year in Project

Goal - I wanted to sew something to wear. It has to be comfortable, be worn with different things in my closet and fun.

Steps -I looked on the internet for ideas and found a skirt I liked on the website Elle Apparel. -Next I chose fabric. I found some that I liked at Walmart. It’s called “Cotton Span”. The fabric contents are 68% polyester, 27% cotton and 5% spandex. The fabric feels like soft t- material which makes it very comfortable. -I then cut out the fabric pieces according to the directions listed using my measurement (24 inches) as a guide on the size of the pieces and waistband. -The front had one large in the middle with 2 small on each side. The back had 2 inverted pleats. I needed the front and back to be exactly 13 ½ inches at the waist which allowed for ½ side seam allowance (2 inches total) and 1 extra inch for in getting the skirt on and off. It took several times of measuring to center all the pleats and make sure the front and back were right. -Now I was ready to sew the front and back together. I first basted them together and tried on the skirt before permantly sewing them. -For the waistband I cut 4 pieces, 13 ½ inches in length and 3 ½ inches in width. Elastic was stretched and sewn in for added comfort and fit. -The final step was the hem. I sewed 2 rows of stitching to give it a more finished look. -With the leftover material I made a matching . I love wearing and think it completes the outfit.

I like how the skirt turned out. It is very comfortable and can be worn for many different occasions. I can wear it this summer with t- or the white shirt in the pictures. When the weather gets cooler I can wear it with a black shirt and and flats.

Cost of the Skirt: Pattern Free ⅞ yard fabric $6.12 Notions $1.00 Total Cost: $7.12

Learned -The internet is a great place to find sewing projects and free patterns. -I learned how to sew a skirt. -The fabric used for my skirt was easy to sew. -It is important to measure correctly for cutting out pattern pieces. -The pleats needed to be measured right or the skirt wouldn’t look right. -I basted the side seams and tried the skirt on first. The waist was too big so I had to adjust it. -The elastic sewn in the waistband helped it fit right and make it more comfortable.

Future I want to continue sewing clothes. I think it’s fun picking out a pattern and fabric and then finishing it into something I can wear. Next year I would like to make matching outfits for my three younger cousins.
