A nice homage to the hero that started it allBy spideynsThis book surprised me, but I don't know why, because I love all things Mark Millar. If you've read any of his other work, this book will be right up your alley. Not as edgy as his other works like on the Authority, Wanted, Nemesis, etc, but still a nice edition to what I feel is the strongest library in modern age comic writing. There is a little bit of a sentimental tone, and it sometimes borders on a little sappy at times, but it delivers for a quick and thoughtful homage to Superman as a comic and movie icon. And of course, there a couple of small twists along the way, nothing too crazy, but I surprised that Millar actually surprised me! I would highly recommend this for any comic fan, and for Mark Millar fans, its a no-brainer!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What Comics Are All About .... ...By Jaime B.If only Superman were this much fun. This is a story of wish fulfillment pure and simple. A physically challenged young boy is transformed into his favorite fictional super hero with the aid of a space suited monkey ... ... with a secret agenda. This is what great comics are all about. Lenil Francis Yu's art never looked better. His art is truly gorgeous here. And I must add that I think this is Millar's best work since The Ultimates and Civil War. Superior was largely inspired by Christopher Reeves according to a recent interview with Mark Millar. Favorite sequence: when Superior takes care of the Al Quaida problem around the globe without a single drop of bloodshed or a single shot fired. Fantastic. Superior is a must have for your graphic novel library.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Marriage of skill and styleBy Johnny ThornSuperior is not only pretty to look it is a pretty damn good comic book. I was lost in the tale and found that I did the same things as the kid in the story. It is one of those tales and you read it and say to yourself, "I have read something similar to this and what is so special." Then you see the book on a shelf and remember that is a great story and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Just read the story imaging your young self in the shoes of this guy. Simon Pooni was a normal kid with a great life, until multiple sclerosis hit. He lost the ability to walk, went blind in one eye and sometimes could barely speak. Every night, Simon would pray that his disease would somehow go away. "Somehow" turned out to be a magic monkey named Orman, who granted Simon one wish. And the 12-year-old boy stood transformed into a real-life version of legendary comic-book hero Superior. Simon spent one glorious week saving those in need, averting natural disasters - becoming the mostbeloved man on the planet. But Orman ominously cautioned Simon all would be explained in one week. Will Simon be forced to go back to life in a wheelchair after being the world's greatest hero? Faced with adversity, will he prove himself to truly be...Superior?COLLECTING: Superior 1-7 About the AuthorMark Millar is one of comics' most commercially successful writers, his work includes Kick-Ass, Wanted, Nemesis and the bestselling Civil War and The Ultimates. This relationship has also informed superhero comics themselves – going all the way back to Superman’s debut in Action Comics 1 (June 1938). As DC President Paul Levitz says of the development of the superhero: ‘There was an enormous desire to see social justice, a rectifying of corruption. Superman was a fulfillment of a pent-up passion for the heroic solution’ (quoted in Poniewozik 2002: 57). • Avengers and Its Applicability in the Swedish EFL-Classroom
Master’s Thesis Avenging the Anthropocene Green philosophy of heroes and villains in the motion picture tetralogy The Avengers and its applicability in the Swedish EFL-classroom Author: Jens Vang Supervisor: Anne Holm Examiner: Anna Thyberg Date: Spring 2019 Subject: English Level: Advanced Course code: 4ENÄ2E 2 Abstract This essay investigates the ecological values present in antagonists and protagonists in the narrative revolving the Avengers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The analysis concludes that biocentric ideals primarily are embodied by the main antagonist of the film series, whereas the protagonists mainly represent anthropocentric perspectives. Since there is a continuum between these two ideals some variations were found within the characters themselves, but philosophical conflicts related to the environment were also found within the group of the Avengers. Excerpts from the films of the study can thus be used to discuss and highlight complex ecological issues within the EFL-classroom. Keywords Ecocriticism, anthropocentrism, biocentrism, ecology, environmentalism, film, EFL, upper secondary school, Avengers, Marvel Cinematic Universe Thanks Throughout my studies at the Linneaus University of Vaxjo I have become acquainted with an incalculable number of teachers and peers whom I sincerely wish to thank gratefully. However, there are three individuals especially vital for me finally concluding my studies: My dear mother; my highly supportive girlfriend, Jenniefer; and my beloved daughter, Evie. i Vang ii Contents 1 Introduction

  • African Afro-Futurism: Allegories and Speculations
African Afro-futurism: Allegories and Speculations Gavin Steingo Introduction In his seminal text, More Brilliant Than The Sun, Kodwo Eshun remarks upon a general tension within contemporary African-American music: a tension between the “Soulful” and the “Postsoul.”1 While acknowledging that the two terms are always simultaneously at play, Eshun ultimately comes down strongly in favor of the latter. I quote him at length: Like Brussels sprouts, humanism is good for you, nourishing, nurturing, soulwarming—and from Phyllis Wheatley to R. Kelly, present-day R&B is a perpetual fight for human status, a yearning for human rights, a struggle for inclusion within the human species. Allergic to cybersonic if not to sonic technology, mainstream American media—in its drive to banish alienation, and to recover a sense of the whole human being through belief systems that talk to the “real you”—compulsively deletes any intimation of an AfroDiasporic futurism, of a “webbed network” of computerhythms, machine mythology and conceptechnics which routes, reroutes and criss- crosses the Atlantic. This digital diaspora connecting the UK to the US, the Caribbean to Europe to Africa, is in Paul Gilroy’s definition a “rhizo- morphic, fractal structure,” a “transcultural, international formation.” […] [By contrast] [t]he music of Alice Coltrane and Sun Ra, of Underground Resistance and George Russell, of Tricky and Martina, comes from the Outer Side. It alienates itself from the human; it arrives from the future. Alien Music is a synthetic recombinator, an applied art technology for amplifying the rates of becoming alien. Optimize the ratios of excentric- ity. Synthesize yourself.

  • Recycling the Other: the Role of Nostalgia in Superhero Comics’ Orientalism Nao Tomabechi
Recycling the Other: The Role of Nostalgia in Superhero Comics’ Orientalism Nao Tomabechi Abstract Whiteness has been one of the core ideals in American mainstream superhero comics, but in recent years, with demands for diversity increasing, more than ever, racial minorities have leading roles in superhero comics. However, the struggle for Asians in the superhero genre is not entirely gone. The number of appearances may have increased, but stereotypes do persist. Japanese characters in superhero comics, for instance, whether they are heroes or villains, are still forced to display their Otherness, even in recent works. In this paper, by using Wolverine’s adventures set in Japan and the Japanese superhero Katana from DC Comics as examples, I argue that Asians in contemporary superhero comics are still contained within the grasps of Orientalism, and that nostalgia plays a significant role in that containment. Keywords: Orientalism, nostalgia, racism, continuity, diversity Introduction As many scholars and fans have already pointed out, whiteness has been one of the core ideals in American mainstream superhero comics.1 From DC Comics’ Superman and Batman to Marvel’s Captain America and Iron Man, the most famous and popular superheroes, as well as supervillains, have always been predominantly white. In recent years however, with increasing demands for diversity, this focus on whiteness has been highly questioned and criticized. Consequently, more than ever, racial minorities have leading roles in superhero comics. Miles Morales, the Spider-Man of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, is a mixed-race teenager, and the African Black Panther is now extremely popular after the successful film released in 2018.

REPRINT FROM AUGUST 7, 2017 NETFLIX’S FIRST ACQUISITION BOOSTS COMICS PORTFOLIO Netflix, which has long chosen to build from within, has acquired Millarworld, producer of characters including Kick-Ass and the Kingsman. BY LEON LAZAROFF Netflix Inc. (NFLX) has made its first-ever acquisition. The world’s largest video streaming service on Monday, Aug. 7, said it has acquired Millarworld, a producer of graphic novels and comics featuring characters such as the Kingsman, Old Man Logan and Kick-Ass. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Matt Syrkin and Ken Lefkowitz of Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP and Addleshaw Goddard LLP provided legal counsel to Millarworld. Netflix shares on Monday morning were up 0.1% to $180.47. The end goal, of course, is to transfer Millarworld’s characters onto the small and large screen, or as Netflix said in its statement, to “bring Millarworld’s portfolio of critically and fan-acclaimed character franchises to life through films, series and kids’ shows available exclusively to Netflix members globally.” Millarworld’s ‘Old Man Logan’ In his own post, Millar hinted a deal had been in the works for months. the third time that a comic maker has been acquired by a major media company. • Stan Lee and the Marvel Revolution
HOME > PLANET ENGLISH > STAN LEE AND THE MARVEL REVOLUTION English Stan Lee and the Marvel Revolution Level A2 28 novembre 2018 Last 12 November one of the most important authors in the history of comic books passed away: his name was Stan Lee and he was 95 years old. Lee wrote hundreds of comics and invented dozens of characters. He worked for many years for the publisher Marvel Comics, for whom he created, among others, The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Daredevil, Black Panther and the X-Men. Today these characters are more than fifty years old, but they are still very popular. They are the protagonists of comic books, but also of video games, animated and live-action series and feature films. The ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ – which includes the films of just some of Marvel’s superheroes – is the highest- grossing film franchise in history, earning more than even the Star Wars and Harry Potter franchises. Lee ‘signed’ these films by appearing in them as an actor, playing short, funny cameos. Lee’s superheroes Lee was full of energy and ideas. He started working when he was very young. After a series of odd jobs, he began working for a comic book publisher, Timely Comics (later renamed Marvel Comics). It was 1939. He liked writing, but he felt that the comic books of the time were too simple. After many years of writing what he called “silly little comics” he was ready to quit, but his wife told him: “before you do, why don’t you do one comic book the way you would like to do it?” If his boss fired him it wouldn’t matter – he was going to quit anyway.
