Abstract This thesis will discuss the emerging influence of film review aggregators and their effect on the changing landscape for reviews in the film industry. Specifically, this study will look at the top 150 domestic grossing films of 2010 to empirically study the effects of two specific review aggregators. A time-delayed approach to regression analysis is used to measure the influencing effects of these aggregators in the long run. Subsequently, other factors crucial to predicting film success are also analyzed in the context of sustained earnings.

BAMBACH has been approved for the School of Film and the College of Fine Arts by Ofer Eliaz Assistant Professor of Film Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT BAMBACH, NICHOLAS D., M.A., August 2016, Film In the Company of Modern Men: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Hollywood Comedies Director of Thesis: Ofer Eliaz This thesis discusses the increasing visibility of masculine identity in contemporary Hollywood comedies. I examine how shifting developments in economic, societal, cultural, and gender relations impacted the perception of cinematic masculinity. The men, more specifically white and heterosexual, in these films position themselves as victims and, as a result, turn to alternative outlets to ease their frustrations and anxieties. In order to broadly survey the genre of the past two decades, I focus on three consistently popular character tropes in Hollywood comedies: slackers, office workers, and bromantic friendships. All the male characters discussed throughout the thesis are plagued by their innermost anxieties and desires that compromise their gendered identities. However, these films resort to a regressive understanding of masculinity and functions within the dominant heteronormative structures. This thesis demonstrates how Hollywood comedies present a contradictory and multifaceted image of modern masculinity.

  • Other Guys' a Frustrating Movie with a Lot of Laughs - Chicago Tribune 10-08-18 7:32 PM
'Other Guys' a frustrating movie with a lot of laughs - Chicago Tribune 10-08-18 7:32 PM Advertisement You are here: ChicagoTribune.com > Collections > Talladega Nights Ads by Google 2 1/2 stars 'Other Guys' a frustrating movie with a lot of laughs Will Ferrell and company deliver a good hour of laughs August 05, 2010 | By Michael Phillips | Movie critic 2 1/2 stars A frustrating movie, albeit one with a lot of laughs, "The Other Guys" stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as New York Police Department desk jockeys who get a chance to transform themselves into high-risk, maximum-destruction superstars, chasing down a Bernie Madoff-type scam artist and destroying half their city in the process. For a good hour, this is the picture Kevin Smith was trying to make with "Cop Out." It's satisfying to see Ferrell take on a more officious, buttoned-down character (though with a checkered past); that way, an actor has somewhere to go with his craziness, as opposed to sustaining a boor's boor, as Ferrell did in "Talladega Nights" and his best comedy to date, "Anchorman." And Wahlberg's comic instincts, his slow- and quick-burning exasperation, may not carry the subtlety of his superb supporting turn in "The Departed," but they more than meet the demands of this project. Ads by Google Advertisement So why does it frustrate? Because Adam McKay and co-writer Chris Henchy ( "Land of the Lost") have overloaded the narrative, stretching it 20 minutes beyond its practical use and mistaking bigger and more explosive with funnier.

  • The Spectacular Consumption of “True” African American Culture: “Whassup” with the Budweiser Guys?
Critical Studies in Media Communication Vol. 19, No. 1, March 2002, pp. 1–20 The Spectacular Consumption of “True” African American Culture: “Whassup” with the Budweiser Guys? Eric King Watts and Mark P. Orbe ᮀ—Spectacular consumption is a process through which the relations among cultural forms, the culture industry, and the lived experiences of persons are shaped by public consumption. This essay examines how the spectacular consumption of “Whassup?!” Budweiser advertising is constitutive of white American ambivalence toward “authentic” blackness. The essay argues that Budweiser’s hottest ad campaign benefits from a tension between the depiction of “universal” values and the simultaneous representation of distinctive culture. The illustration of blackness as sameness and blackness as otherness arises out of conflicted attitudes toward black culture. Thus, Budweiser’s strategic attempts to regulate and administer “authentic” blackness as a market value also reproduce this ambivalence. Furthermore, as an object of spectacular consumption, the meaning of “authentic” black life and culture is partly generative of mediated and mass marketed images. harles Stone, III, must have felt as Stone was “floored” when Anheuser- Cthough he had gone to sleep and Busch asked him to translate his film awoken in Oz. It was three short years into a 60-second commercial spot for ago that he captured on film candid Budweiser beer (McCarthy, 2000, p. moments among three of his friends, 8B). Stone was equally surprised when, edited them into an engrossing and out of respect for “realism,” he was visually stunning short film called allowed to cast those same friends from “True,” and used it as a video resume´.

  • The Yes Men Are Revolting
THE YES MEN ARE REVOLTING SYNOPSIS For the last 20 years, notorious activists the Yes Men (Mike Bonanno and Andy Bichlbaum) have staged outrageous and hilarious hoaxes to draw international attention to corporate crimes against humanity and the environment. Armed with nothing but thriftstore suits and a lack of shame, these iconoclastic revolutionaries lie their way into business events and government functions to expose the dangers of letting greed run our world. In their third cinematic outing (after The Yes Men and The Yes Men Fix The World), they are now well into their 40s, and their midlife crises are threatening to drive them out of activism forever – even as they prepare to take on the biggest challenge they’ve ever faced, climate change. More than the first two installments, The Yes Men Are Revolting is as much a character study as it is an entertaining depiction of their latest interventions. Revealing the real people behind the ruses, at its heart lies a hopeful message about fighting for change. KEY CREATIVE PERSONNEL Laura Nix, Director and Producer Laura Nix directed and produced the documentary The Light in Her Eyes, which premiered at IDFA, was broadcast on the series POV on PBS, and toured the world as part of Sundance's Film Forward program. She cowrote the Emmynominated PBS doc California State of Mind: The Legacy of Pat Brown, and her shortform nonfiction work has been shown on HBO, IFC, Planet Green, and the History Channel. She produced festival hit The Yes Men Fix the World, which was sold to HBO and won the audience award at the Berlinale.

  • A Quantitative Analysis of the Perceived Quality for Popular Movies by Consumers, Experts and Peers
A quantitative analysis of the perceived quality for popular movies by consumers, experts and peers Student name: Ruth Bos Student number: 409141 Supervisor: Dr. P. Bhansing Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam Cultural Economics and Entrepreneurship Master Thesis June 8, 2016 Master Thesis “Quality time at the movies” Ruth Bos - 409141 ABSTRACT Academic research pertained to the marketing of motion pictures has identified the importance of quality on the commercial success of popular movies with indicators as consumer evaluations, expert ratings and peer-recognized awards as the Academy Awards. However, most researchers fail to analyze the quality of a movie as a measurement of performance of a movie. The current study extents previous research by aiming to measure the perceived quality of consumers, experts and peers for popular movies, based on the assumptions made on the success factors for commercial performance in previous marketing literature. Through a quantitative internet content analysis, data was gathered on the motion picture industry. The models were tested with a sample of 320 movies released between 2000-2015. Results show that the perceived quality of consumers overlap with the perceived quality of experts, which contradicts statements about the ‘little taste’ of consumers. Moreover, the data shows that there is a difference between the perceived quality of consumers and the commercial success of a movie, measured in box office revenue. However, for both commercial success and the perceived quality of consumers, popular appeal is still important for the satisfaction of the consumer. Managerial and theoretical implications, as well as limitations and directions for future research are offered.

First, I wish to thank my advisor, Mary Vavrus, whose insightful work in feminist media studies and political economy is widely respected and admired. She has been an inspiring teacher, an astute critic, and a thoughtful pilot for me through this process, and I attempt to channel her dignity and competence daily. Thank you to my committee chair, Gilbert Rodman, for his unfailing encouragement and support and for his perceptive insights; he has a rare gift for challenging students while simultaneously imbuing them with confidence. Donald Browne honored me with his advice and participation even as he prepared to ease his way out of active teaching, and I learned from him as his student, as his teaching assistant, and as a listener to what must be only a tiny part of his considerable collection of modern symphonic music. Jacqueline Zita’s combination of theoretical acumen and pragmatic activism is the very definition of a feminist scholar, and my days in her classroom were memorable. Laurie Ouellette is a polished and flawless extemporaneous speaker and teacher, and her writing on television is illuminating; I have learned much from her.
