  • Pakistan – Floods Fact Sheet #14, Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 September 10, 2010 Note: the Last Fact Sheet Was Dated September 7, 2010
BUREAU FOR DEMOCRACY, CONFLICT, AND HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE (DCHA) OFFICE OF U.S. FOREIGN DISASTER ASSISTANCE (OFDA) Pakistan – Floods Fact Sheet #14, Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 September 10, 2010 Note: The last fact sheet was dated September 7, 2010. KEY DEVELOPMENTS Satellite imagery indicates that nearly 12 percent of Sindh Province remains flooded, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Flooding continues to threaten Dadu and Johi towns where the swollen Indus River enters the Arabian Sea. To protect Dadu and Johi towns, media sources report that irrigation authorities breached a dike and are diverting floodwaters toward Manchar Lake. As a result, rising water in Manchar Lake could cause flooding in parts of Sehwan tehsil in Jamshoro District. Authorities in Nasirabad Division of Baluchistan estimate that approximately 400,000 people are displaced in the area, of which an estimated 50 percent are from Sindh Province. Their ability to return is dependent on the reopening of the Quetta-Jacobabad–Sukkur road, which could take at least two weeks. According to OCHA, the Jacobabad–Shikarpur road has reopened to light traffic. Jacobabad, the largest town in one of the most affected districts of Sindh, has been cut off for 28 days. The seventeenth USAID/OFDA relief flight arrived in Islamabad on September 8, delivering 1,600 rolls of plastic sheeting sufficient to provide temporary shelter for an additional 48,000 people. On September 9, USAID/OFDA committed more than $1.3 million to a non-governmental organization (NGO) to support humanitarian coordination and information management activities in flood-affected areas.

  • “Reconciliation” in Pakistan, 2006-2017: a Critical Reappraisal
Journal of the Research Society of Pakistan Volume No. 54, Issue No. 2 (July - December 2017) Muhammad Iqbal Chawla ERA OF “RECONCILIATION” IN PAKISTAN, 2006-2017: A CRITICAL REAPPRAISAL Abstract This paper deals with an era of unusual political development which can be described as the „era of reconciliation‟ from 2006 to 2017. This era was unique in Pakistan‟s history because it brought closer all political parties for restoration, protection, and continuation of democracy in Pakistan. However, after a decade this period, sometimes also can be characterized as the era of the Charter of Democracy (COD,) seems to be losing its relevance because of surfacing of anti- democratic forces. Therefore this paper traces the causes, events and the deep impact of the policy of „reconciliation‟ and also touches upon why and how it seems to be coming to an end. As a national leader Benazir Bhutto had political acumen and she propounded the “Philosophy of Reconciliation” after having gone through some bitter political experiences as a Prime Minister and leader of the Opposition. Both Benazir and Mian Nawaz Sharif learnt the lesson when they were sent into their respective exile by General Musharraf. Having learnt their lessons both of them decided upon strengthening the culture of democracy in Pakistan. Benazir not only originated the idea of Reconciliation but also tried to translate her ideas into actions by concluding the „Charter of Democracy‟ (“COD”) with other political parties especially with the Pakistan Muslim League (hereafter “PML (N)”), in 2006”. Introduction Asif Ali Zardari1 as PPP2‟s main leader tried to implement this philosophy after the sudden death of Benazir Buhtto and particularly during his term as President of Pakistan (2008-2013).

Transport Infrastructure Development, Tourism and Livelihood Strategies An Analysis of Isolated Communities of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan Asif Hussain A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Lincoln University New Zealand December 2019 i Abstract Geographically isolated communities around the world are dependent upon the limited assets in local subsistence economies to generate livelihoods. Locally available resources shape and give identity to unique cultural activities that guarantee individual, family and community livelihood sustainability. The social structure provides community relationship networks, which ensure access to, and availability of, resources over long periods. Resources are utilised in ways that reduces vulnerability, stresses and shocks while ensuring long-term resilience. Preparedness and adaptation are embedded into cultural memory, enabling communities to survive in isolated, remote and harsh conditions. Communities’ cultural memories, storytelling, traditional knowledge, interdependence and unwritten cultural norms that build resilience to sustain cultures that have limited interactions with the outside world. This thesis aims to investigate the consequences of transport infrastructure development, mainly of roads, on livelihood strategies of isolated communities in a tourism context in Gilgit- Baltistan, Pakistan.
