Alan Kronstadt Specialist in Asian Affairs Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division Congressional Research Service ˜ The Library of Congress Pakistan-U.S. Relations Summary A stable, democratic, economically thriving Pakistan is considered vital to U.S. interests. U.S. concerns regarding Pakistan include regional terrorism; Pakistan- Afghanistan relations; weapons proliferation; the ongoing Kashmir problem and Pakistan-India tensions; human rights protection; and economic development. A U.S.-Pakistan relationship marked by periods of both cooperation and discord was transformed by the September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States and the ensuing enlistment of Pakistan as a key ally in U.S.-led counterterrorism efforts. Top U.S. officials regularly praise Islamabad for its ongoing cooperation, although doubts exist about Islamabad’s commitment to some core U.S. interests. Pakistan is identified as a base for terrorist groups and their supporters operating in Kashmir, India, and Afghanistan. Since late 2003, Pakistan’s army has been conducting unprecedented counterterrorism operations in the country’s western tribal areas. Separatist violence in India’s Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir state has continued unabated since 1989, with some notable relative decline in recent years. India has blamed Pakistan for the infiltration of Islamic militants into Indian Kashmir, a charge Islamabad denies. The United States reportedly has received pledges from Islamabad that all “cross-border terrorism” would cease and that any terrorist facilities in Pakistani-controlled areas would be closed. Similar pledges have been made to India. -

Nelson, SOAS, University of London SUMMARY: Mainstream Islamist parties in Pakistan such as the Jama’at-e Islami and the Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam have demonstrated a tendency to combine the gradualism of Brotherhood-style electoral politics with dawa (missionary) activities and, at times, support for proxy militancy. As a result, Pakistani Islamists wield significant ideological influence in Pakistan, even as their electoral success remains limited. About this Series: The Rethinking Political Islam series is an innovative effort to understand how the developments following the Arab uprisings have shaped—and in some cases altered—the strategies, agendas, and self-conceptions of Islamist movements throughout the Muslim world. The project engages scholars of political Islam through in-depth research and dialogue to provide a systematic, cross-country comparison of the trajectory of political Islam in 12 key countries: Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Syria, Jordan, Libya, Pakistan, as well as Malaysia and Indonesia. This is accomplished through three stages: A working paper for each country, produced by an author who has conducted on-the-ground research and engaged with the relevant Islamist actors. A reaction essay in which authors reflect on and respond to the other country cases. A final draft incorporating the insights gleaned from the months of dialogue and discussion. A dome, with its typical shape, has been a significant architectural element of a mosque from early times. However scientific, technological and industrial developments gave birth to new structural forms and shapes. Thus there are numerous new possibilities for the shape and form in place of a typical dome. It is being observed that the contemporary features and styles of domes of Lahore are different from the historic mosques of the Mughul era in terms of form, construction methodology, structure support system, materials and interior finishes. Thus objective of the current paper is to compare the architectural features and styles of domes in the Mughul historical mosques with those of the contemporary mosques built in newly established housing colonies in the same city. The objective is focus on evaluation of the changes in stylistic features of the new domes and also on the identification of factors responsible for new developments and contemporary trends in the domes of Lahore. In order to assess, a comparative analysis with the domes of Mughul historical mosques and domes of contemporary mosques from different locations of Lahore is done. -

(Photo by Kamran Chaudhry/ucanews.com) After a suicide bomber killed 12 people on May 8 outside a major Sufi shrine in Lahore, capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab, Sikh activist Gurjeet Singh and his friends made a pact to form human chains around local mosques to physically and symbolically ward off religious extremism. "We spend our weekends protecting Muslim worshipers. This shows our solidarity with our brothers and sisters who subscribe to Islam, the majority faith in Pakistan. It also strengthens interfaith harmony in our troubled society," the 26-year-old told ucanews.com, adding the group plans to ring the bombed Data Darbu shrine in June. The Sikh activist, who launched a free ambulance service last year at a government hospital, joined other interfaith activists in locking hands around the city's Jamia Masjid Minhaj-ul- Quran mosque on May 18 to safeguard the 50-odd worshippers inside. For 20 minutes after sunset, they stood on the grounds of the mosque as it hosted a fast- breaking ritual known as iftar . The morning counterpart to this is known as suhoor — a meal taken just before sunrise. Both are practiced daily during the holy fasting month of Ramadan, which this year runs from May 5 to June 4. -

One month will be given for scrutiny of nomination paper for the purpose of pre-clearance of the candidates under article 62 and 63 of the constitution so that the eligibility of the candidates is determined by the Elections Commission of Pakistan. No candidate would be allowed to start the election campaign until pre-clearance on his/her eligibility is given by the Election Commission of Pakistan. 2) The treasury benches in complete consensus with Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) will propose names of two honest and impartial persons for appointment as Caretaker Prime Minister. 3) Issue of composition of the Election Commission of Pakistan will be discussed at the next meeting on Sunday, January 27, 2013, 12 noon at the Minhaj-ul-Quran Secretariat. Subsequent meetings if any in this regard will also be held at the central secretariat of Minhaj-ul-Quran in Lahore. -

IRI Index Pakistan Public Opinion Survey March 7-30, 2009 Survey Methodology • In-person, in-home interview • National representative sample of adult residents of Pakistan. • n = 3,500 • Conducted between March 7-30, 2009 • Margin of error ± 1.66 percent overall • Data collected by Socio Economic Development Consultants (SEDCO) • A multi-stage probability sample was used. In the first stage, the sample was stratified into four provinces. In the second stage, the sample was further stratified into districts within each province by rural and urban categories. In the third stage eachdistrict was further stratified by Union Councils. • The sample was distributed at the provincial level, rural and urban, in all four provinces of Pakistan (except for the Federally Administrative Tribal Areas (FATA), Chitral and Kohistan). The sample was then post-weighted to make it proportionate to national representation by province. • The eligibility criteria is age, which for this survey is 18 years and above. • The response rate was just over 90percent. • The interview teams were comprised of both of males and females;the female respondents were interviewed by female interviewers and male respondents by male interviewers. • Kish method was used to select respondents 18 years and older within the randomly selected household.
