Band: Gorgoroth (N) Genre: Black Metal Label: Soulseller Records Album Titel: Instinctus Bestialis Spielzeit: 31:18 VÖ: 12.06.2015 Bereits seit 1992 lärmen die norwegischen Schwarzmetaller von Gorgoroth durch alle Herren Länder. Nun erscheint mit "Instinctus Bestialis" ihr zehntes Studiowerk. Bis zu "Incipit Satan" habe ich ihre Musik noch mitverfolgt. Nach Gaahls Ausstieg 2012 und andere Besetzungswechsel, habe ich die Truppe dann ziemlich aus den Augen verloren und war daher neugierig, wie sie wohl Anno 2015 klingen!? Der Sound und die Grundstimmung der Platte sind atmosphärisch komponiert worden. Überwiegend dunkel-düster und schwermütig sind besonders die Riffs und der Klang der Gitarren. Die Stimme von Atterigner ist dezent tief und kehlig gehalten. Hin und wieder wird auch ein wenig gegrowlt und ein leichter Einschlag an Todesblei ist nicht zu überhören. Etliche Teile der Stücke sind in verschiedenen Tempi gehalten und wechseln sich ab. Überwiegend wird aber im Midtempo-bereich gezockt. Auch wenn die durchdachten Strukturen musikalisch auf hohem Niveau sein mögen, so habe ich doch von einer Band wie Gorgoroth mehr Wut, Aggression und Raserei erwartet. Vielleicht bin ich da zu traditionell eingestellt, aber dieser "melancholische" Einschlag ist für mich, in dieser Menge, einfach nicht passend; Weiterentwicklung hin oder her. Es gibt genügend neuere Combos denen diese Attitüde besser steht. Leider bleibt auch ein schleppendes Gefühl bei etlichen Titeln, welches sich beim Hören bald bei mir eingestellt hat. Zudem ist die Platte mit knapp 31 Minuten auch noch sehr kurz für ein Vollalbum. Fazit: Musikalisch liegt zwar ein qualitativ gutes und sehr düster gehaltenes Album vor, welches mich aber leider nicht wirklich packen kann. Viele Songstrukturen sind einfach schon zu "überspielt" und ausgeleiert. Die Anspieltipps sind noch die Höhepunkte in der knappen halben Stunde. Sicherlich liegt hier ein Silberling vor, der über dem Durchschnitt tangiert, mehr aber auch nicht. Leider zündet der Funke nur bedingt! Die Scheibe ist einfach "zu glatt" gemacht worden. Schade eigentlich, denn die früheren Werke haben mir musikalisch und mit dem Gesang von u.a. Pest, Hat oder Gaahl, um Längen besser gefallen! 2000 – In Depth Zine - Interview with Tormentor Norwegian black metallers, Gorgoroth, are back! Their latest release, "Incipit Satan," is a work of pure evil. The songs are a bit more refined and mature, but it's the same black metal you've grown to love. I recently got the chance to chat with Tormentor. Below we discuss the new album, the many line-up changes over the years and whether or not Gorgoroth writes love songs! Dive in and fill your head with all this extreme knowledge. Meilani: How long did it take to make "Incipit Satan?" Lyrics and all. Tormentor: Well, we were in the studio, Sunlight Studios, we used three weeks for recording and another week for mixing. Before that we rehearsed for a couple of months. We don't rehearse very much, we just rehearse right before the album. The music is mainly written by me and the other guitarist, Infernus. We get together and arrange the music and mix it and get together with all the guys. M: Was the recording process for this album any different from the recording process of the previous albums? T: Well, it was different. And that is what we wanted. We all live in the city of Bergen, in Norway. The studio we have been using is in the city. So, on the former albums we went to the studio and did what we had to do then got back to work or whatever and this time we got to Stockholm, Sweden. You're 100% into working with music all the time.

As previously announced Metal Mind Productions will release first ever Gorgoroth’s DVD. “Black Mass Krakow 2004” DVD with their spectacular show recorded in Krakow, Poland will finally see the light of day on 9th June in Europe and 10th June in US (via MVD). Gorgoroth, Norwegian black metal band, drew the attention of the international media in early 2004 after their show in Krakow. They were accused of "offending religious feelings" during the gig, as well as suspected of breaching Polish law concerning the protection of animal rights by using severed and impaled heads of sheep as part of their stage design. The controversial concert in Poland resulted in the group being investigated for the possible breach of Article 196 of Polish penal code concerning offense of religious feelings (the maximum penalty for breaching this article is five years in prison). In one of the band’s first interviews after this controversial concert, Infernus said to Unrestrained! Magazine (Canada): "We didn’t plan to really have an outcome like that, our only intent was to go there and film the DVD (…) All the chaos and media reaction that came from this was a surprise of sorts." Asked if they "were (…) worried when the authorities were called" Infernus answered: "Not worried, really. I mean, what was the worst thing they could do? Destroy the tapes? I don’t think they would do that and I don’t think they could really do any harm to us, though they might be able to put the Polish producer away in prison for a few years.

I lys av mine erfaringer er jeg av den oppfatning at det ikke bare handler om å unngå å miste oversikt i andres landskap, være seg teori, metode eller empiriske størrelser. Det handler like mye om å ikke miste oversikt i eget landskap. I løpet av prosessen har jeg støtt på en mengde solide hindringer. Og mange av dem har jeg selv skapt. Men det er disse som har brakt meg videre og gitt meg grunnlag og motivasjon til å utfordre min egen forforståelse, erkjenne at enkelte valg ikke har vært de beste, forkaste mine konklusjoner og la kildematerialet snakke for seg selv. Noe som forhåpentligvis har resultert i bedre innsikt og forståelse. I etterpåklokskapens sursøte refleksjon innser man at all selvkritikk – og kritikk fra kollegaer og veileder(e) – til syvende og sist har endt i et produkt som er særdeles mye bedre enn det eventuelle resultatet av å støtte seg på startfasens umiddelbare intuisjoner og ambisjoner. Denne avhandlingen har ikke bare vært en dannelsesreise i den akademiske kunsten, men også en reise der personlig refleksjon og kritisk sans har eskalert betraktelig! Gjennom arbeidet med denne avhandlingen har jeg fått god hjelp av flere personer.

“I Worship Death, Evil, and All Darkness”: Black Metal and Satanism Massimo Introvigne 1. Music for Satan? On November 13, 2015, terrorists associated with ISIS attacked the Bataclan theatre in Paris and started killing those attending a concert there. Before the French police entered the theatre, 89 were dead. Playing at the Bataclan that day was a band called Eagles of Death Metal. One of their songs was called Kiss the Devil, and proclaimed “I will love the Devil” and “I will kiss the Devil on his tongue.” Both Muslim and Christian fundamentalists around the world commented that “Satanists” had been punished, and connected the band with Satanism and “Satanic” Heavy Metal music. In fact, this was a misunderstanding. The members of Eagles of Death Metal have no connection with Satanism, their references to the Devil notwithstanding. Neither are they part of Heavy Metal or its subgenre Death Metal. Their genre is rock rather than metal, and the name “Eagles of Death Metal” came from a conversation with a drunken man in a bar, which led the band to wonder how a cross between the well-known American rock band Eagles and Death Metal would look like.1 The Paris tragedy, however, generated a new interest on the connection between rock music and Satanism. Legends of talented musicians who had sold their souls to the Devil are as old as music itself, but it was in the 1960s that Satan started being consistently mentioned in rock music. Sympathy for the Devil, a 1968 song by the Rolling Stones where the Devil tells his story in the first person as a “man of wealth and taste” is just one among many examples.

This dissertation examines uses of history and expressions of cultural memory in Norwegian black metal. Formed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Norwegian black metal seemed at odds with many of the stereotypes of Norway. The genre is an extreme style of heavy metal music that has been associated with burning churches, desecrating graves, and committing murders. Yet, Norway is often perceived as wealthy with sublime natural beauty and high levels of equality. Since the late 1990s, Norwegian black metal has increasingly received positive recognition and support from Norwegian government agencies and cultural institutions who have deemed this style of music a cultural product of Norway. In exploring the relationship between Norwegian black metal and Norway, two primary questions are asked: what makes Norwegian black metal ‘Norwegian’ and what are its influences? To answer these questions, a theoretical approach based on Astrid Erll’s cultural memory complex is used.
