Band: Gorgoroth (N) Genre: Black Metal Label: Soulseller Records Album Titel: Instinctus Bestialis Spielzeit: 31:18 VÖ: 12.06.2015 Bereits seit 1992 lärmen die norwegischen Schwarzmetaller von Gorgoroth durch alle Herren Länder. Nun erscheint mit "Instinctus Bestialis" ihr zehntes Studiowerk. Bis zu "Incipit Satan" habe ich ihre Musik noch mitverfolgt. Nach Gaahls Ausstieg 2012 und andere Besetzungswechsel, habe ich die Truppe dann ziemlich aus den Augen verloren und war daher neugierig, wie sie wohl Anno 2015 klingen!? Der Sound und die Grundstimmung der Platte sind atmosphärisch komponiert worden. Überwiegend dunkel-düster und schwermütig sind besonders die Riffs und der Klang der Gitarren. Die Stimme von Atterigner ist dezent tief und kehlig gehalten. Hin und wieder wird auch ein wenig gegrowlt und ein leichter Einschlag an Todesblei ist nicht zu überhören. Etliche Teile der Stücke sind in verschiedenen Tempi gehalten und wechseln sich ab. Überwiegend wird aber im Midtempo-bereich gezockt. Auch wenn die durchdachten Strukturen musikalisch auf hohem Niveau sein mögen, so habe ich doch von einer Band wie Gorgoroth mehr Wut, Aggression und Raserei erwartet. Vielleicht bin ich da zu traditionell eingestellt, aber dieser "melancholische" Einschlag ist für mich, in dieser Menge, einfach nicht passend; Weiterentwicklung hin oder her. Es gibt genügend neuere Combos denen diese Attitüde besser steht. Leider bleibt auch ein schleppendes Gefühl bei etlichen Titeln, welches sich beim Hören bald bei mir eingestellt hat. Zudem ist die Platte mit knapp 31 Minuten auch noch sehr kurz für ein Vollalbum. Fazit: Musikalisch liegt zwar ein qualitativ gutes und sehr düster gehaltenes Album vor, welches mich aber leider nicht wirklich packen kann.

The songs are a bit more refined and mature, but it's the same black metal you've grown to love. I recently got the chance to chat with Tormentor. Below we discuss the new album, the many line-up changes over the years and whether or not Gorgoroth writes love songs! Dive in and fill your head with all this extreme knowledge. Meilani: How long did it take to make "Incipit Satan?" Lyrics and all. Tormentor: Well, we were in the studio, Sunlight Studios, we used three weeks for recording and another week for mixing. Before that we rehearsed for a couple of months. We don't rehearse very much, we just rehearse right before the album. The music is mainly written by me and the other guitarist, Infernus. We get together and arrange the music and mix it and get together with all the guys. M: Was the recording process for this album any different from the recording process of the previous albums? T: Well, it was different. And that is what we wanted. We all live in the city of Bergen, in Norway. The studio we have been using is in the city. So, on the former albums we went to the studio and did what we had to do then got back to work or whatever and this time we got to Stockholm, Sweden. You're 100% into working with music all the time.

As previously announced Metal Mind Productions will release first ever Gorgoroth’s DVD. “Black Mass Krakow 2004” DVD with their spectacular show recorded in Krakow, Poland will finally see the light of day on 9th June in Europe and 10th June in US (via MVD). Gorgoroth, Norwegian black metal band, drew the attention of the international media in early 2004 after their show in Krakow. They were accused of "offending religious feelings" during the gig, as well as suspected of breaching Polish law concerning the protection of animal rights by using severed and impaled heads of sheep as part of their stage design. The controversial concert in Poland resulted in the group being investigated for the possible breach of Article 196 of Polish penal code concerning offense of religious feelings (the maximum penalty for breaching this article is five years in prison). In one of the band’s first interviews after this controversial concert, Infernus said to Unrestrained! Magazine (Canada): "We didn’t plan to really have an outcome like that, our only intent was to go there and film the DVD (…) All the chaos and media reaction that came from this was a surprise of sorts." Asked if they "were (…) worried when the authorities were called" Infernus answered: "Not worried, really. I mean, what was the worst thing they could do? Destroy the tapes? I don’t think they would do that and I don’t think they could really do any harm to us, though they might be able to put the Polish producer away in prison for a few years.

I lys av mine erfaringer er jeg av den oppfatning at det ikke bare handler om å unngå å miste oversikt i andres landskap, være seg teori, metode eller empiriske størrelser. Det handler like mye om å ikke miste oversikt i eget landskap. I løpet av prosessen har jeg støtt på en mengde solide hindringer. Og mange av dem har jeg selv skapt. Men det er disse som har brakt meg videre og gitt meg grunnlag og motivasjon til å utfordre min egen forforståelse, erkjenne at enkelte valg ikke har vært de beste, forkaste mine konklusjoner og la kildematerialet snakke for seg selv. Noe som forhåpentligvis har resultert i bedre innsikt og forståelse. I etterpåklokskapens sursøte refleksjon innser man at all selvkritikk – og kritikk fra kollegaer og veileder(e) – til syvende og sist har endt i et produkt som er særdeles mye bedre enn det eventuelle resultatet av å støtte seg på startfasens umiddelbare intuisjoner og ambisjoner. Denne avhandlingen har ikke bare vært en dannelsesreise i den akademiske kunsten, men også en reise der personlig refleksjon og kritisk sans har eskalert betraktelig! “I Worship Death, Evil, and All Darkness”: Black Metal and Satanism Massimo Introvigne 1. Music for Satan? On November 13, 2015, terrorists associated with ISIS attacked the Bataclan theatre in Paris and started killing those attending a concert there. Before the French police entered the theatre, 89 were dead. Playing at the Bataclan that day was a band called Eagles of Death Metal. One of their songs was called Kiss the Devil, and proclaimed “I will love the Devil” and “I will kiss the Devil on his tongue.” Both Muslim and Christian fundamentalists around the world commented that “Satanists” had been punished, and connected the band with Satanism and “Satanic” Heavy Metal music. In fact, this was a misunderstanding. The members of Eagles of Death Metal have no connection with Satanism, their references to the Devil notwithstanding. Neither are they part of Heavy Metal or its subgenre Death Metal. Their genre is rock rather than metal, and the name “Eagles of Death Metal” came from a conversation with a drunken man in a bar, which led the band to wonder how a cross between the well-known American rock band Eagles and Death Metal would look like.1 The Paris tragedy, however, generated a new interest on the connection between rock music and Satanism. Legends of talented musicians who had sold their souls to the Devil are as old as music itself, but it was in the 1960s that Satan started being consistently mentioned in rock music. Sympathy for the Devil, a 1968 song by the Rolling Stones where the Devil tells his story in the first person as a “man of wealth and taste” is just one among many examples.

With a fifth album entitled Incipit Satan now being released on Nuclear Blast, the band is bringing their venomous brand of metal to extreme music fans all over the globe. Along with Satyricon and Darkthrone, Gorgoroth are one of the most respected Black Metal bands in the world. We recently had a chance to interview one of the members – it was one of our legendary early morning phone calls – for while it is 5AM here in California, the time in Norway equates to a chilly early afternoon. And it is now that we say greetings to the mighty Gorgoroth... Highwire Daze: Introduce yourself, what you do in Gorgoroth, and tell me how long the band has been together. Tormentor: My name is Tormentor and I am the guitarist of Gorgoroth – there are two guitarists in Gorgoroth right now actually. I’ve been in Gorgoroth since late 96, and this is the second album I performed on. HD: Where is the band based from and what is the music scene like there? Tormentor: We are from the Western Coast of Norway. Most of the guys in Gorgoroth now live in the city of Bergen which is the second biggest city in Norway. But it’s rather small, compared to the cities in the U.S. None of us are from Bergen, we just live here. It’s really a great place for the music scene, because you have Immortal, some of the Enslaved guys live here, Malignant Eternal, Hades – all those people into brutal metal.

METAL REFERENCE interview with Infernus - September 2003, by Metal Reference One of those early afternoons in September, 2003, Gorgoroth guitarist and unofficial band leader, Infernus, phoned yours truly in order straighten things up in the wake of the sixth full length from the Norwegian, Bergen-based act. The album entitled Twilight of the Idols - In Conspiracy with Satan has been issued on Nuclear Blast Records as we speak, and Infernus is seemingly satisfied with the product. ”We basically began the writing process following the recording of Incipit Satan (the previous album, the editor) in 1999, but it was our bass player, King ov Hell, who wrote most of the music”, Infernus tells me. “And as you might know, our vocalist Gaahl went to prison for a year... and then he was suddenly incarcerated a second time, and this caused quite a delay. We never thought about replacing Gaahl, but it was obviously a huge problem that our vocalist was absent. I have no problem with the fact that King ov Hell wrote the music, because he was the one with the right inspiration, and the album turned out quite well. The title refers to Nietzsche’s book The Twilight of the Idols, which was his grand declaration of war on all the prevalent ideas of his time. We decided to use a local studio in Bergen, Shimmer Recordings. On the last album, we used Sunlight Studios in Sweden, and before that Grieghallen (notorious studio of infamous producer Pytten, the editor). We could have gone to Florida to record the album if we wanted to, but we decided to stay home..
