Horizonte, ubicada en el estado brasileño de Minas Gerais, fue el sitio que vio nacer, a inicios de los 80 del pasado siglo, a la banda de rock de nuestro continente que más impacto ha registrado a escala universal: el grupo Sepultura. Integrada en un primer momento por los hermanos Cavalera, Max (guitarra y voz), e Igor (batería), junto al bajista Paulo Jr., y Jairo Guedez en una segunda guitarra, la agrupación conserva total vigencia a más de 20 años de fundarse. Las principales influencias que el cuarteto reconoce en sus comienzos, provienen de gentes como Slayer, Sadus, Motörhead y Sacred Reich, quienes les ayudan a conformar un típico sonido de thrash metal. En 1985, a través del sello Cogumelo Produçoes, editan en Brasil su primer trabajo fonográfico, Bestial devastation, un disco publicado en forma de split (como se conoce a un álbum compartido con otra banda), en compañía de los también brasileños de Overdose. El éxito del material sorprende a muchos y así, Cogumelo Produçoes se asocia a Road Runner Records, para sacar al mercado, en 1986, el primer LP íntegro con música de Sepultura, Morbid visions, valorado al paso del tiempo como un clásico del universo metalero, gracias a cortes como War, Crucifixion y, en especial, Troops of doom, tema que pasó a ser una suerte de himno para la banda.

    Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 ROCKING THE CANON: HEAVY METAL AND CLASSICAL LITERATURE By Heather L. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).

Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.

    Band: Gorgoroth (N) Genre: Black Metal Label: Soulseller Records Album Titel: Instinctus Bestialis Spielzeit: 31:18 VÖ: 12.06.2015 Bereits seit 1992 lärmen die norwegischen Schwarzmetaller von Gorgoroth durch alle Herren Länder. Nun erscheint mit "Instinctus Bestialis" ihr zehntes Studiowerk. Bis zu "Incipit Satan" habe ich ihre Musik noch mitverfolgt. Nach Gaahls Ausstieg 2012 und andere Besetzungswechsel, habe ich die Truppe dann ziemlich aus den Augen verloren und war daher neugierig, wie sie wohl Anno 2015 klingen!? Der Sound und die Grundstimmung der Platte sind atmosphärisch komponiert worden. Überwiegend dunkel-düster und schwermütig sind besonders die Riffs und der Klang der Gitarren. Die Stimme von Atterigner ist dezent tief und kehlig gehalten. Hin und wieder wird auch ein wenig gegrowlt und ein leichter Einschlag an Todesblei ist nicht zu überhören. Etliche Teile der Stücke sind in verschiedenen Tempi gehalten und wechseln sich ab. Überwiegend wird aber im Midtempo-bereich gezockt. Auch wenn die durchdachten Strukturen musikalisch auf hohem Niveau sein mögen, so habe ich doch von einer Band wie Gorgoroth mehr Wut, Aggression und Raserei erwartet. Vielleicht bin ich da zu traditionell eingestellt, aber dieser "melancholische" Einschlag ist für mich, in dieser Menge, einfach nicht passend; Weiterentwicklung hin oder her. Es gibt genügend neuere Combos denen diese Attitüde besser steht. Leider bleibt auch ein schleppendes Gefühl bei etlichen Titeln, welches sich beim Hören bald bei mir eingestellt hat. Zudem ist die Platte mit knapp 31 Minuten auch noch sehr kurz für ein Vollalbum. Fazit: Musikalisch liegt zwar ein qualitativ gutes und sehr düster gehaltenes Album vor, welches mich aber leider nicht wirklich packen kann.

    2000 – In Depth Zine - Interview with Tormentor Norwegian black metallers, Gorgoroth, are back! Their latest release, "Incipit Satan," is a work of pure evil. The songs are a bit more refined and mature, but it's the same black metal you've grown to love. I recently got the chance to chat with Tormentor. Below we discuss the new album, the many line-up changes over the years and whether or not Gorgoroth writes love songs! Dive in and fill your head with all this extreme knowledge. Meilani: How long did it take to make "Incipit Satan?" Lyrics and all. Tormentor: Well, we were in the studio, Sunlight Studios, we used three weeks for recording and another week for mixing. Before that we rehearsed for a couple of months. We don't rehearse very much, we just rehearse right before the album. The music is mainly written by me and the other guitarist, Infernus. We get together and arrange the music and mix it and get together with all the guys. M: Was the recording process for this album any different from the recording process of the previous albums? T: Well, it was different. And that is what we wanted. We all live in the city of Bergen, in Norway. The studio we have been using is in the city. So, on the former albums we went to the studio and did what we had to do then got back to work or whatever and this time we got to Stockholm, Sweden. You're 100% into working with music all the time.

The STAFF WRITERS Alex Bondar foundation teamed up with CNN’s 2012 Hero of the Year, Pushpa Basnet, and her Laureen Horan Early Childhood Development Center in Kathmandu, Nepal, home to nearly 50 kids Rebecca Reynolds adopted by Basnet after their mothers were incarcerated. The school was destroyed Nick Walsh during the quake, leaving Basnet and the children living under a makeshift tent in a field facing heavy rain, wary of aftershocks. PRODUCTION MANAGER Autumn Hilden In 2014, Basnet visited Traverse City to meet the community, which welcomed her DESIGNERS Cassandra Chase with open hearts. As previously announced Metal Mind Productions will release first ever Gorgoroth’s DVD. “Black Mass Krakow 2004” DVD with their spectacular show recorded in Krakow, Poland will finally see the light of day on 9th June in Europe and 10th June in US (via MVD). Gorgoroth, Norwegian black metal band, drew the attention of the international media in early 2004 after their show in Krakow. They were accused of "offending religious feelings" during the gig, as well as suspected of breaching Polish law concerning the protection of animal rights by using severed and impaled heads of sheep as part of their stage design. The controversial concert in Poland resulted in the group being investigated for the possible breach of Article 196 of Polish penal code concerning offense of religious feelings (the maximum penalty for breaching this article is five years in prison). In one of the band’s first interviews after this controversial concert, Infernus said to Unrestrained! Magazine (Canada): "We didn’t plan to really have an outcome like that, our only intent was to go there and film the DVD (…) All the chaos and media reaction that came from this was a surprise of sorts." Asked if they "were (…) worried when the authorities were called" Infernus answered: "Not worried, really. I mean, what was the worst thing they could do? Destroy the tapes? I don’t think they would do that and I don’t think they could really do any harm to us, though they might be able to put the Polish producer away in prison for a few years.
