Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession. -

Toinen tärkeä tehtävä on ana- lyysimetodin testaus, kuinka hyvin sen tuottamat tulokset vastaavat musiikin kuulokuvaa. Metodi perustuu yhtyeen kappaleiden graafisten similariteettimatriisien visuaaliseen analyysiin sekä kappaleiden tonaalisen rakenteen hie- rarkkiseen klusterointiin. Samanlaista tutkimusta ei aikaisemmin ole suoritettu, joten taustateoriana toimii tutki- muksen eri osa-alueiden piiristä yhdistelty taustatieto. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu alkuperäisessä audiomuodossa olevista Nightwish-yhtyeen kappaleista sekä niiden pohjalta luoduista MIDI-tiedostoista. Aineistoon sisältyvät kaikki yhtyeen täyspitkien studioalbumien alkuperäis- julkaisuilta löytyvät yhtyeen omat kappaleet. Yksinkertaiset rakennemuodot hallitsevat valtaosaa Nightwish–yhtyeen kappaleista. Nicht nur aufgrund der Tatsache, dass man mit dem neuen Album die Charts stürmen will, um sich weltweit als feste Größe zu etablieren, lag es natürlich nahe, dass sich das Way Up Magazin für euch auf den neuesten Stand im Nightwish-Camp bringen musste. Der äußerst redselige und gut gelaunte Bassist und Sänger Marco Hietala rief mich aus der Nuclear Blast Schaltzentrale in Donzdorf an und stellte sich meinen Fragen. Opinnäytetyössä on perehdytty myös tarinallista- miseen ja tuotteistamiseen, mitä tarvittiin historiapolun tekemisessä. Opinnäytetyössä käytettiin tiedonkeruumenetelmänä kyselyjä, jotka toteutettiin Webropol-kysely työkalulla ja aineistoa analysoitiin laadullisesti. Kyselyjä tehtiin kaksi: suomen- ja englanninkieli- senä. Kyselyjä jaettiin sosiaalisessa mediassa ja ne kohdistettiin Nightwishin musiikkia kuuntele- ville. Kyselyjen tarkoituksena oli auttaa muodostamaan asiakasprofiilit sekä suomalaisista että ul- komaalaisista mahdollisista asiakasryhmistä. Opinnäytetyössä käytettiin myös kirjallisuutta ja säh- köisiä lähteitä. Asiakasprofiilit muodostettiin kyselyjen tuloksien perusteella, ja Nightwish-historiapolku muodos- tettiin sekä näiden tuloksien että yhteyshenkilöiden ja kirjallisuuden avulla. ASPECTS OF EMOTION AND CONSTRUCTION IN THE MUSIC OF NIGHTWISH Charris Efthimiou University of Music and Performing Arts, Institution 1, Austria [email protected] Abstract The compositions of NIGHTWISH are one of the most exciting examples of symphonic heavy metal. Tuomas Holopainen composes songs full of emotion and poetry and uses many strategies in order to accompany them musically. The songs of NIGHTWISH are a successful fusion of lyrical emotion and musical construction. How is NIGHTWISH’s popularity explained? What musical features characterize this band? Can the music of this group be analyzed from a music scientific point of view? The aim of this article is, on the one hand, to give sound answers to these questions and, on the other hand, to describe from a music analytical point of view the sound of this band in terms of how emotionality influences the musical construction. Through canonization and Historical documentation, white male dominance has been ensured, obscuring contributions made by white female performers and erasing black, Indigenous, and women of colour (BIWoC) from the genre. Utilizing feminist critical discourse analysis (feminist CDA) to examine texts by canonized male bands reveals the discursive parameters of ideal heavy metal subjectivity (IHMS). Exploration of texts created by white female performers, including a case study of Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, isolates the necessity for white female performers to reproduce the discourses of IHMS in order to secure their participation in the culture, further contributing to the erasure of BIWoC performers. However, feminist CDA also reveals transformative potential within these texts to de-centre IHMS as the default subject position and shows white women’s agency and resiliency as performers.
