For more information, please contact the WRAP Team at: [email protected] warwick.ac.uk/lib-publications SHELLEY AND THE IDEA OF EFIC: A STUDY, WITH PARTICULAR REFTSiENCE TO THREE FRE-1818 NARRATIVES by FRANCIS BRETT CURTIS Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick May 1979 SUMMARY This study examines the idea of epic exemplified in Shelley's Queen Kab (1813)* Alastor (1816), and Laon and Cythna (1817), whose epic dimensions are illustrated by placing the poems within three relevant contexts: modern twentieth century criticism on the Romantic epic; late eighteenth and early nineteenth century epic practice and criticism; the concepts of dream, vision and allegory in relation to epic, found in contemporary sources of Shelley's day. Part I of the thesis establishes these three contexts, being directly supported by Appendix 2 which contains evidence suggesting Shelley's access to many of the primary sources cited. Part II is an individual reading of the three narratives; the manuscript investigation into Laon and Cythna. summarized in Appendix 1, complements the dream/vision discussion in Chapter 6. -

With This Ring Jumpchain Version 1.2 By Disposable_Face DC’s Earth 16 is a world where villains have learned that open villainy is not sufficient to achieve their goals, where the major names in crime – Luthor, Savage, the Brain, and others of similar temperament and caliber – have subtly joined forces and formed the Light, a council of villains dedicated to advancing their own interests and end their worlds dependency on heroes like the Justice League, some hope to do this by advancing technology, others by taking over the world, but for now they hide their goals and resources as they gather their power. DC’s Earth 16 is a world where young heroes struggle to step out of their mentor’s shadows. Where young men and women work to define themselves independently of their parentage or their teachers, while facing the worst of what the universe has to offer, threats both subtle and gross, terrestrial and xeno, old and new. When their mentors cannot adapt to the new tactics of villains, or when the drama inherent to teenage life is complicated by the mess of super-hero life, Young Justice must rise to the occasion and save the world. This … is not that world. … Oh, the world of “With This Ring” certainly resembles the world of Young Justice/Earth 16, though it includes a much broader swath of general DC characters and storylines, but there are ever-growing differences stemming, largely, from a single event. th On the 4 of July, 2010, a man awakens in orbit over an Earth that is not his own, with nothing but his pajamas and an Orange Power Ring (not even possessing an Orange Lantern), and while Paul recognizes the broad strokes of DC, he has no memory of this specific universe and the nuances of its plot. -

The Peacock on Stage and in Print: A Study of the 1920s New Drama Adaptations of Southeast Flies the Peacock Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Man He Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2009 Thesis Committee: Kirk Denton, Advisor Patricia Sieber Copyright by Man He 2009 Abstract This thesis is a revisionist study examining the Chinese new drama, xinju, of the 1920s, a field that has suffered from relative critical neglect and oversimplification. Situating my study in the field of cultural production, depicted by Pierre Bourdieu as an “economic world reversed,” I continue to investigate how the “three principles,” identified by Michel Hockx as constituting the structure of modern Chinese cultural production, commanded different agents in the field of new drama to share and/or compete for symbolic, economical and political capitals. In so doing, this thesis problematizes a series of binaries, namely, “old”/“new,” “West”/“China,” and “professional”/“amateur,” which have unfortunately served as the foundations of the monolithic imagination of Chinese modernity since at least the May Fourth movement. To sufficiently argue against such schematization, the focus of this thesis is on a particular set of texts—a series of new drama adaptations of the ballad, Southeast Flies the Peacock (Kongque dongnan fei) that were circulated either as script or stage performances, or both in the 1920s. Through a close examination of the production and consumption of these printed scripts and stage performances, this thesis reveals the constant confrontations, compromises, and negotiations between the binaries of the West and China, the iconoclastic and the traditional, the reformative and the conservative, and the “new” and the “old” during the early formation of Chinese new drama at the turn of the twentieth century. -

The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indicatio, that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
