March 2020: Skandia Dance and Music Events

Dances Friday, March 6 SKANDIA FIRST FRIDAY DANCE, Cedar Valley Grange, 20526-52nd Ave. W., Lynnwood, WA 98036-7610. At 7:30 p.m., Frank and Elaine will be teaching fun Danish dances that will be played by the band this evening. Requirements: Bring a smile and enthusiasm. At 8:30, we welcome Gammel Dansk from Vancouver, B.C. When not dancing or enjoying dessert and coffee, the seven musicians in Gammel Dansk love nothing better than to play Nordic tunes on their , chromatic button , guitar, uke, keyboard, and bass, with an occasional or trombone tossed in for good measure. Their program is sure to include plenty of and , as well as a sociable sprinkling of mixers and sets, quickly taught on-the-fly. Friday, March 20 SKANDIA THIRD FRIDAY DANCE, Cedar Valley Grange, 20526-52nd Ave. W., Lynnwood, WA 98036-7610. Harry Khamis and Pat Pi will teach Gothenburg and E-18 in the hour prior to the evening dance. At 8:30, Seattle's Hale Bill & the Bopps will take the stage. Making liberal use of fiddles, piano, voice, hardingfele, and , the Bopps will play a wide variety of dances, from fun mixers and gammaldans to polskas and springars. Dance Classes Wednesdays, now through March 11, then April 1–June 3 SKANDIA BASICS DANCE CLASS. Free! This is the Skandia dance class for everybody who is new to Scandinavian dancing or wants to review the basics. Bob Hamilton, other instructors, and Lisa Brooks will go over how to turn and will teach fun basic dances, including schottis, , , Slängpolska, and easy mixers. Beginners and experienced dancers are welcome; this class will focus on beginners. Singles and couples are welcome; we switch partners frequently. Come when you can; no need to register or attend all classes. Wear smooth-soled shoes with a low flat heel for easy turning. University Heights Center, room 109, 5031 University Way NE, Seattle. Wednesdays, February 19–March 25 SKANDIA INTERMEDIATE DANCE CLASS. Harry Khamis & Pat Pi will teach a quick review of snoa, schottis, and waltz. New material will include snoa, schottis, and waltz variations and introduction to the most commonly danced polskas. Thursdays, March 26–April 16 SKANDIA VILLAGE DANCE CLASS. Harry Khamis and Pat Pi will teach several advanced polskas, some of which Harry Khamis learned during his two-year stay in . Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N., Seattle, room 32 (lower building). For the 4-week series: $35 for Skandia members (or $10/class) or $40 (or $12/class).

Thursdays, March 19 TARGETED DANCE PRACTICES. We will review dances that you request, including dances that were recently taught. This is a good opportunity to work on those tricky bits and to just practice the dances. Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N., Seattle, room 32 (lower building), 7:30-9 p.m. $7 per evening for Skandia members.

Music Events Saturday, March 7 SKANDIA JAM. The monthly jam session will be Saturday, March 7, at the University Place (Tacoma area) home of Leslie Foley. Please consider carpooling and come with your instruments, your voice, and, if you like, a snack to share.
