It • 99 CHAPTER I AN INTRODUCTION The purpose of this thesis is to study one of the basic themes in the poetry of Robert Frost. The theme is expressed by Robert Frost's refiections on human love and on life's struggle. Once clearly understood, this love­ struggle concept sheds :new light on Frost's poetry and richly rewards the care.ful reader of his poems. The present thesis proposes to an.alJrze this theme according to the following :method: first, Frost's ooncept ot human struggle will be studied} seoond, his concept of human 10Te) tJdrd, how an analysis of these two oomplementary concepts in his poetry affords a deeper appreoiation ot two of Frost's poems, nStopping by \o'ioods on a. Snowy Evening" and "Mending Wall. The reason for examining this love-struggle theme.. inst.ead of some other basic theme, is that Frost i! ~ ! simple~. Even though some critics have aocused him of Simplicity, the more COOlmOn accusation is that he writes overly complex and unintelligib~ ambiguous poetry. Me accusation is 1 made by those whom Frost calls tithe people who a.na.l.,vze poems.1f C<:mtple:x:l.ty', however, is not a fault. One friendly critio, Ibnald A. Stauf'fer, insta.nees lnObert Lee boat, quoted by George Adams a.nd Frank: Neelon, "Robert Frost. Poet tor a Jubilee," b Boston College Stylus, LXX (May 1957), 53. 1 2 two lines of Frost's poem "Sceptic" as an example of the way a great poet con­ denses much meaning into fev words. The lines read, "I don't believe what makes you red in the face! Is after explosion going away so fast. ,,2 Staulter says in praise of these lines, "To put into tw lines a whole astronomical theory of the present state of the universe, including the supporting data dependent upon the wave-lengths of light, and then • • • del\Y­ ing the theory, is perhaps as much metaphysical complexity as is good for half of arty quatrain. Yet Frost. is accused of simplicity.'" Staulfer thinks that the number of astronomical facts that Robert Frost has telescoped into t1llO lines of poetry indicates the power-packed na.ture of Prostfs words. And 1Ihile clensity-ot-fact is not the only factor that contributes to the complexity of Frost's poetry, it does indicate just how much meaning Frost can inject into his words, it indicates, too, that an appreciation of one of Frost's recurrent themes may be the reader.s key to the poet's deeper message. Quite ob'viously, Frost is not a s:tmple poet - as the rest of this thesis shall make clear. If one is going to seek Frost's meani.ng - or at least a meaning that oould be Frost's - in his poetry, one might begin by finding out the poet's definition of poetr,v. In other words, does Frost's own idea of the nature of poetry allow for the communication of the author's complex and deeper 2rrost, CO!!Plete Poems !?! Robertr Frost (New York, 1949), p. 549. Frost believes that good poetry is always a "clarifica.tion of 1ife.,,4 From this "definition" it may be interred: if good poetry is a "clarifica.tion of life," Frost's good poetry m.ay well be expected to be as deep as his own understanding of life. The fact is, as Peter Viereck: says, that "on first reading, Frost seems easier than he really :ts." It is also true that "Frost's conventionality of form makes many young poets and readers think his is also a conventionality of meaning. On the contrary, he is one of the most original writers of our time.tlS The result of the ea8l"-going, chatty, and commonplace tone ill Frost.s poetry, as Professor James C. Southworth says, is that the poet's clarification ot life and his deeper meaning remain hidden from the casual reader. Such a reader either misses the 6 reportorial and philosophical. qualities of the poems, or he is puzzled. 'tY~hat does Frost mean?" nevertheless, is a frequent question of those who are more than casual readers of his work. ltrost so tires of hearing it that he practically refuses to answer it. He says, "Such presumption needs to be twinkled at and baffled. It was — and one of you saved my life, with my visual migraine which sent me into something of a panic. Something else I’ve learned is you should never — you should never read a poem in public that you haven’t read for many years. It can sneak up on you and kick you, and that’s what this poem did. I haven’t looked at The Chicago Defender poem for a long, long, long time. And here I am, half blinded, and then I got emotional at the end of it. So I apologize for that and see if I can get through this with a decent reading. That happened to me one time before with a poem called “April Inventory” by W. D. Snodgrass. And sometimes, you know, poetry has a — has a way of getting to you, whether you want it to or not. But let me — it’s a good poem. It’s only a few minutes long. If you can bear with it, I wanted to get that on in the lesson. This was the poem that I asked Gwendolyn Brooks why she didn’t read it while she was here and she said she no longer liked the ending of it. So I particularly want you to pay attention to the ending of it. She asked me why I liked it and I said because I’m from Little Rock, and then she inquired, “How old were you in 1957?” And when I told her I was eleven, it was okay.

    Program Notes by Michael Moore rewind//PLAY//fastforward Performed October 17, 2009 This evening’s concert begins a season-long celebration of American choral music. The concert opens and closes with music of Charles Ives, that most original and enigmatic of American composers, and also includes Frostiana, Randall Thompson’s superb setting of seven Robert Frost poems. We rewind for a reprise concert performance of David Lang’s deeply moving battle hymns, premiered last season, and fast forward to a preview of Roberto Sierra’s Missa Latina, which Mendelssohn Club will present in its Philadelphia premiere in April. Charles Ives The uniquely eclectic musical style of Charles Ives (1874-1954) was greatly influenced by his father. George Ives was a cornet player and military bandleader in the Civil War, and had returned to his native Danbury, Connecticut where he continued as a bandleader, conductor of theater orchestras and choir director. He had a keen interest in acoustical effects, once marching two bands across the town green from opposite directions, playing different tunes in different keys to gauge the effect, building a device for playing music in quarter tones, and teaching his son to sing in one key while accompanying him in another. He encouraged Charles to experiment with different musical effects, but also instilled in him a love of traditional hymns and tunes, all of which influenced his later music. By the time he entered Yale at 20, Ives was a virtuoso organist and an accomplished pianist and composer. He had already written such significant works as his Variations on America and Psalm 67.

BRYANT, JR. We are all here tonight for the same purpose, to honor a man who by his achievements and his stature as a human being, can come closer than anyone else I know to making Kentucky, which is after all a hodge-podge geographically, politically, and c111.lturally, if there ever was one, speak with one voice, say yes to something in unison. It's a cause for both sadness and rejoicing that there are some occasions when more than miles separate the Purchase and the mountains, the Tennessee Ridge and the Ohio River. But Red Warren, as his friends have been calling him now for most of his seventy-five years, miraculously unites Bluegrass and Pennyrile, just as he has miraculously encompassed Tennessee, Louisiana, the Midwest, New England, to say nothing of Europe and especially Italy, and made them, transformed, inhabit a body of fiction and verse in which we detect what Donald Davison, an old friend and Tennessean, was wont to call "the Kentucky voice of Warren." It's a distinctive voice that we Kentuckians respond to, acknowledge, and tonight claim as our own.

Richardson, Jr. Neoconservatism: Origins and Evolution, 1945 – 1985 (Under the direction of Michael H. Hunt) This dissertation examines the origins and evolution of neoconservatism as a philosophical and political movement in America from 1945 to 1980. I maintain that as the exigencies and anxieties of the Cold War fostered new intellectual and professional connections between academia, government and business, three disparate intellectual currents were brought into contact: the German philosophical tradition of anti-modernism, the strategic-analytical tradition associated with the RAND Corporation, and the early Cold War anti-Communist tradition identified with figures such as Reinhold Niebuhr. Driven by similar aims and concerns, these three intellectual currents eventually coalesced into neoconservatism. As a political movement, neoconservatism sought, from the 1950s on, to re-orient American policy away from containment and coexistence and toward confrontation and rollback through activism in academia, bureaucratic and electoral politics. Although the neoconservatives were only partially successful in promoting their transformative project, their accomplishments are historically significant. More specifically, they managed to interject their views and ideas into American political and strategic thought, discredit détente and arms control, and shift U.S. foreign policy toward a more confrontational stance vis-à-vis the Soviet Union.

One is that the poet has buried an encoded message deep within the poem that the reader must wrestle out. Another is that when a reader encounters different perspectives within a single poem, like sorrow and joy, one perspective has to be right and the other wrong. But sometimes a person can be both happy and sad. At the same time, one feeling doesn't always win out over the other, which is why poems quite often arise out of the desire to acknowledge and explore the messy, complex, contradictory nature of life. And while it is sometimes an abundance of feelings and opinions, that draw young poets to the art form, I suspect that more poems arise out of the writers desire to learn, listen and discover, than out of the intention to make grand or infallible pronouncements realizing this when I was a younger writer, set me free, allowing me to engage with all manner of material about which I knew little and sought to learn more dh Lawrence's poem, song of a man who has come through is an example of a poem written out of the wish not to pronounce, but to receive wisdom.     Gwendolyn Brooks and Me By Ivy J.P. Yoder Imagine not knowing if your Mom and Dad would make it home safely from work. Imagine attending a school that was segregated. Imagine living in a culture that laughed at and made fun of your dreams – just because of your skin color. This was the reality for Gwendolyn Brooks, an African‐ American girl born in Kansas who began writing poetry in 1924 at age seven. Ms. Brooks certainly had talent. Her mother saw it right away, telling her daughter, “You’re going to be the lady Paul Laurence Dunbar!” By the time Ms. Brooks was eleven her poetry had been published in a local Chicago newspaper. Two years later one of her poems appeared in a children’s magazine, and by sixteen she had published 75 poems. Despite the challenges of growing up in segregated Chicago, Ms. Brooks found encouragement from her community. In fact, she even received words of encouragement from Langston Hughes, who she met at her family’s church after a poetry recital he gave. Working hard and supported by her parents (a janitor and a school teacher), Ms. Brooks published her first complete book of poetry in 1945 at age twenty‐eight. Five years later her second book won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. She was the first African American to win a Pulitzer. In 1962, Ms. Brooks was invited by President John F. Kennedy to read her poetry at a Library of Congress poetry festival. After that she was invited to teach at many colleges and universities.

Since modern conservatism’s recent birth in the United States in the last half century or more, many historians have claimed that both anti-communism and capitalism kept conservatives working in cooperation. My contention was that the intellectual founder of postwar conservatism, Russell Kirk, made imagination, and not anti-communism or capitalism, the thrust behind that movement in his seminal work The Conservative Mind. In The Conservative Mind, published in 1953, Russell Kirk created a conservative genealogy that began with English parliamentarian Edmund Burke. Using Burke and his dislike for the modern revolutionary spirit, Kirk uncovered a supposedly conservative seed that began in late eighteenth-century England, and traced it through various interlocutors into the United States that culminated in the writings of American expatriate poet T.S. Eliot. What Kirk really did was to create a counter-narrative to the American liberal tradition that usually began with the French Revolution and revolutionary figures such as English-American revolutionary Thomas Paine.
