Since modern conservatism’s recent birth in the United States in the last half century or more, many historians have claimed that both anti-communism and capitalism kept conservatives working in cooperation. My contention was that the intellectual founder of postwar conservatism, Russell Kirk, made imagination, and not anti-communism or capitalism, the thrust behind that movement in his seminal work The Conservative Mind. In The Conservative Mind, published in 1953, Russell Kirk created a conservative genealogy that began with English parliamentarian Edmund Burke. Using Burke and his dislike for the modern revolutionary spirit, Kirk uncovered a supposedly conservative seed that began in late eighteenth-century England, and traced it through various interlocutors into the United States that culminated in the writings of American expatriate poet T.S. Eliot. What Kirk really did was to create a counter-narrative to the American liberal tradition that usually began with the French Revolution and revolutionary figures such as English-American revolutionary Thomas Paine. One of my goals was to demystify the fusionist thesis, which states that conservatism is a monolithic entity of shared qualities. I demonstrated that major differences existed from conservatism’s postwar origins in 1953. I do this by using the concept of textual communities. A textual community is a group of people led by a privileged interpreter—someone such as Russell Kirk—who translates a text, for example Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France, for followers. What happens in a textual community is that the privileged interpreter explains to followers how to read a text and then forms boundaries around a particular rendering of a book. I argue that conservatism was full of these textual communities and privileged interpreters. Therefore, in consecutive chapters, I look at the careers of Russell Kirk, John Lukacs, Christopher Lasch, and Paul Gottfried to demonstrate how this concept fleshed out from 1953 and well into the first decade of the new millennium. Epilogue: The Imaginative Turn in America 320 Appendix A: IRB Approval 337 vi Chapter 1: Introduction: The Complex World of Postwar Conservatism Overview: George Nash Defines Conservatism In 1976, historian George Nash published The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America since 1945 (CIM).1 Nash’s tome was the first attempt to explain the significance of conservatism in postwar America. CIM holds a special place among conservatives because it remains the only scholarly effort at synthesizing the entirety of conservative intellectualism in America.2 Nash’s opus was influential for two specific reasons. First, Nash was one of the few scholars who sympathized with the conservatives and was willing to write about them. Second, Nash painted a picture of conservatism as a monolithic entity. Nash offered a readable and clean narrative that made CIM accessible to many. Nash’s study brought together various anti-liberal schools—groups of intellectuals who rejected certain, most, or all aspects of modern liberalism—under the banner of conservatism.3 1 George Nash, The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America since 1945 (Wilmington: ISI Books, 2006). The grouping of these various conservative schools together became known as “fusionism.” Nash explains fusionism through its originator Frank Meyer who believed that conservatism was torn between the anti-authoritarianism of classical liberalism and the authoritarianism of traditionalism. These two philosophies were fused together in return for intellectual viability. Fusionism was also associated with thinking about conservatism as a harmonious entity. This, however, may partially be excused because he was the first to attempt such an undertaking. Recently, historians have chided Nash over his methodology and for using sympathetic broad strokes.4 Understanding the nature of this debate over Nash’s methodology is a key into the recent historiographical shift concerning research on American conservatism. Nash’s belief was that American conservatism came to fruition after the Second World War because of a wider rejection of liberal ideas contained in the New Deal and elsewhere.5 From Nash’s chair, it appeared that conservatives, of all stripes, were reacting

Having announced the event on his twitter 48 hours before hand and working with Red Ice Radio, a live-streaming and in home studio run by a white nationalist married couple, the National Policy Institute along with Identity Europa, the youth wing of the American Freedom Party, (a key organizer for ANP is David Duke’s former right-hand man, Jamie Kelso), a Neo-Nazi formation, was working to create a “virtual rally.” The event itself was billed as a “Safe Space” to talk about race in America, using language common among left-wing, ac- tivist, and anarchist spaces. More recently, however, the issue of the legitimacy of judicial law making has begun to enter the realm of partisan popular debate. This is due to the fact that Republicans controlled the White House for six years and a majority in the Senate for almost all of that time, that they have announced, as it were, a program of picking judges committed to adjudication rather than legislation, and finally, that the Democrats have, just as vigorously, resisted Republican efforts. Brown Jerusalem Post, November 6, 2012 Whether or not US President Barack Obama is re-elected will not just determine the future of politics, it is also likely to influence the future of political punditry as well. The media has been following the US elections with two very, very different narratives. Apart from the obvious – i.e. Democrat versus Republican—opinions were divided between those who thought the race was way too close to call and those who predicted with great confidence that Obama was far more likely to win. Most of the media—including the most respected outlets—continued with the traditional focus on the national polls. Even when state-level polls were cited, analyses often cherry-picked the more interesting polls or ones that suited the specific bias of the pundit. While on occasion this analysis has given one candidate or another an advantage of several points, more often than not they declared the race “neck-and-neck,” and well within any given poll’s margin of error. The other narrative was born out of a new, far more sophisticated political analysis than has ever been seen in the mass media before. Nate Silver, a young statistician who was part of the “Moneyball” revolution in professional baseball, has brought that same methodological rigor to political analysis. The result is that Silver is leading a second revolution: this time in the world of political punditry. In his blog, “Five Thirty-Eight,” (picked up this year by the New York Times), Silver put his first emphasis on the fact that whoever wins the national vote does not actually determine who wins the presidency.

    The Dark Enlightenment Nick Land Part 1: Neo-reactionaries head for the exit March 2, 2012 Enlightenment is not only a state, but an event, and a process. As the designation for an historical episode, concentrated in northern Europe during the 18th century, it is a leading candidate for the ‘true name’ of modernity, capturing its origin and essence (‘Renaissance’ and ‘Industrial Revolution’ are others). Between ‘enlightenment’ and ‘progressive enlightenment’ there is only an elusive difference, because illumination takes time – and feeds on itself, because enlightenment is self-confirming, its revelations ‘self-evident’, and because a retrograde, or reactionary, ‘dark enlightenment’ amounts almost to intrinsic contradiction. To become enlightened, in this historical sense, is to recognize, and then to pursue, a guiding light. There were ages of darkness, and then enlightenment came. Clearly, advance has demonstrated itself, offering not only improvement, but also a model. Furthermore, unlike a renaissance, there is no need for an enlightenment to recall what was lost, or to emphasize the attractions of return. The elementary acknowledgement of enlightenment is already Whig history in miniature. Once certain enlightened truths have been found self-evident, there can be no turning back, and conservatism is pre-emptively condemned – predestined — to paradox. F. A. Hayek, who refused to describe himself as a conservative, famously settled instead upon the term ‘Old Whig’, which – like ‘classical liberal’ (or the still more melancholy ‘remnant’) – accepts that progress isn’t what it used to be. What could an Old Whig be, if not a reactionary progressive? And what on earth is that? Of course, plenty of people already think they know what reactionary modernism looks like, and amidst the current collapse back into the 1930s their concerns are only likely to grow.

Binder 2 Published online: 1 February 2020 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2020 Abstract In this paper, we report data from interviews with members of conservative political clubs at four flagship public universities. First, we categorize these students into three analytically distinct orientations regarding Donald Trump and his presidency (or what we call Trumpism). There are principled rejecters, true believers, and satisficed partisans. We argue that Trumpism is a disunifying symbol in our respondents’ self- narratives. Specifically, right-leaning collegians use Trumpism to draw distinctions over the appropriate meaning of conservatism. Second, we show how political clubs sort and shape orientations to Trumpism. As such, our work reveals how student-led groups can play a significant role in making different political discourses available on campuses and shaping the types of activism pursued by club members—both of which have potentially serious implications for the content and character of American democracy moving forward.
