Sphenoptarinae, Chalcophorinae, Chrysobothrinae, Agrilinae, Cylindromorphinae and Trachyinae Abstract: A faunal and taxonomic study on the family Buprestidae (Coleoptera) was carried provinces of Artvin (Central, Ardanuç, Borçka, Hopa, fiavflat and Yusufeli), Erzincan (Central, Tercan and Üzümlü), Erzurum (Central, Aflkale, Çat, Horasan, Il›ca, ‹spir, Narman, Oltu, Olur, Pasinler, Pazaryolu, fienkaya, Tortum and Uzundere) and Kars (Digor and Sar›kam›fl) in 1993-1997. A total of 38 species were recorded belonging to 6 subfamilies, namely Sphenopterinae (7 species), Chalcophorinae (8), Chrysobothrinae (3), Agrilinae (17), Cylindromorphinae (2) and Trachyinae (1). Of these taxa, Sphenoptera (s.str.) ixion Kerremans is a new record for the Turkish fauna. Agrilus (s.str.) aurichalceus Redtenbacher, Coraebus elatus (Fabricius), Coraebus rubi (L.) Meliboeus robustus (Küster) and M. violaceus (Kiesenwetter) were widespread species in the region. Agrilus aurichalceus, C. rubi, M. robustus, M. violaceus, Capnodis cariosa (Pallas), C. tenebricosa (Olivier), Sphenoptera (s.str.) antiqua (Illiger) and S. (s.str.) ixion Kerremans were more abundant than the others. The larvae of Meliboeus robustus bore into the pith of Echinops ritro which is an important weed species in wheat field and pasture areas in the region. M. robustus puts this plant under stress to a certain degree. Keys to the tribes, genera and species of the examined subfamilies were prepared as well as the body parts of taxonomic importance being illustrated. Furthermore, the distribution of these species in Turkey and the world was given. Host plants of some species were recorded and plant species from which insect samples collected were also included. Received: 9 October 2020; Accepted: 28 October 2020; Published: 30 October 2020 Simple Summary: Several wood-associated insects are inadvertently introduced every year within wood-packaging materials used in international trade. These insects can cause impressive economic and ecological damage in the invaded environment. Thus, several countries use traps baited with pheromones and plant volatiles at ports of entry and surrounding natural areas to intercept incoming exotic species soon after their arrival and thereby reduce the likelihood of their establishment. In this study, we investigated the performance of eight trap colors in attracting jewel beetles and bark and ambrosia beetles to test if the trap colors currently used in survey programs worldwide are the most efficient for trapping these potential forest pests. In addition, we tested whether trap colors can be exploited to minimize inadvertent removal of their natural enemies.

Cárdenas – Gallardo: Relationship between insect damage and chlorophyll content in Mediterranean oak species - 477 - RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INSECT DAMAGE AND CHLOROPHYLL CONTENT IN MEDITERRANEAN OAK SPECIES CÁRDENAS, A. M.* ‒ GALLARDO, P. Dpto. de Zoología, Edificio Darwin, Campus Rabanales, E-14071, University of Córdoba, Córdoba, Spain (tel: +34 957 218604) *Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] (Received 10th Jun 2016; accepted 23rd Jul 2016) Abstract. Considering that the damage caused by phytophagous insects can alter the chlorophyll content of plants, we established the hypothesis that variations in chlorophyll concentration could be applied to assess stress caused by these kind of harmful agents. In this paper, relationship between insect damage and the chlorophyll content of sclerophyllous oak species (Quercus suber and Q. ilex) is investigated. The survey was carried out in Hornachuelos Natural Park (southern Iberian Peninsula). For each plant species, a comparative study of chlorophyll concentration on healthy leaves was performed among a control group of harmless trees and other groups affected by one of the following damaging insects: woodborers, chewing and gall-formers. Results relative to Q. ilex indicated that only damage by gall-formers had a significant effect on average chlorophyll content of healthy leaves. As regard Q. suber, differences in chlorophyll content were only significant when injuries were caused by the woodborer Coraebus florentinus. In conclusion, insect damage could influence the chlorophyll content of the holm and cork oaks, but the effect varies depending on the plant species and the type of harmful agent. Keywords: environmental assessment, oak forests, Quercus ilex, Quercus suber, photosynthesis Introduction Several herbivorous insects are associated with Quercus species (Romanyk and Cadahía, 1992) and, depending on the way of affecting the plant, can be classified as woodborers, carpophagous and folivorous (chewing insects and galls-formers).

  • Inventory and Review of Quantitative Models for Spread of Plant Pests for Use in Pest Risk Assessment for the EU Territory1
EFSA supporting publication 2015:EN-795 EXTERNAL SCIENTIFIC REPORT Inventory and review of quantitative models for spread of plant pests for use in pest risk assessment for the EU territory1 NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology 2 Maclean Building, Benson Lane, Crowmarsh Gifford, Wallingford, OX10 8BB, UK ABSTRACT This report considers the prospects for increasing the use of quantitative models for plant pest spread and dispersal in EFSA Plant Health risk assessments. The agreed major aims were to provide an overview of current modelling approaches and their strengths and weaknesses for risk assessment, and to develop and test a system for risk assessors to select appropriate models for application. First, we conducted an extensive literature review, based on protocols developed for systematic reviews. The review located 468 models for plant pest spread and dispersal and these were entered into a searchable and secure Electronic Model Inventory database. A cluster analysis on how these models were formulated allowed us to identify eight distinct major modelling strategies that were differentiated by the types of pests they were used for and the ways in which they were parameterised and analysed. These strategies varied in their strengths and weaknesses, meaning that no single approach was the most useful for all elements of risk assessment. Therefore we developed a Decision Support Scheme (DSS) to guide model selection. The DSS identifies the most appropriate strategies by weighing up the goals of risk assessment and constraints imposed by lack of data or expertise. Searching and filtering the Electronic Model Inventory then allows the assessor to locate specific models within those strategies that can be applied.

  • New Records of Buprestidae (Coleoptera) from Israel with Description of a New Species
ISRAEL JOURNAL OF ENTOMOLOGY, Vol. 34, 2004, pp. 109-152 New records of Buprestidae (Coleoptera) from Israel with description of a new species MARK VOLKOVITSH Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, 199034 St. Petersburg, Russia ABSTRACT In two expeditions to Israel (in 1994 and 1996), 123 species of Buprestidae (Coleoptera), including one with two subspecies, were collected. Data col- lected, general distribution, and known larval host plants are given for each species. Fifteen Buprestidae species, and new hosts for four species, are recorded from Israel for the first time, including three new host associations for species that already had other known hosts. Xantheremia (Xantheremia) freidbergi is described as a new species. Acmaeodera (Palaeotethya) macchabaea Abeille de Perrin is resurrected from synonymy with A. rubro- maculata sensu Volkovitsh 1986, in part, and two new synonyms, A. pharsaea Obenbberger and A. houskai Obenberger, are established for this species. Acmaeoderella sefrensis Pic is a new status for Acmaeodera rufo- marginata var. sefrensis Pic, and two new synonyms are established for it: A. rufomarginata var. stramineipennis Chobaut and A. virgulata var. lucasi Théry. Acmaeodera miribella Obenberger is a new subspecies of Acmaeo- derella elegans (Harold) n. comb., and Acmaeodera eucera Obenberger is its synonym. Acmaeoderella adspersula arabica Cobos is elevated to species status. Lectotypes are designated for A. rufomarginata var. sefrensis, A. rufomarginata var. stramineipennis, and A. virgulata var. lucasi. INTRODUCTION The study of buprestid fauna of Israel has been relatively poor. Bodenheimer (1937) listed 84 species. There are only a few publications on Israeli buprestids in the 20th century that either summarize data collected (Obenberger, 1946; Niehuis, 1996) or are devoted to buprestid fauna of certain localities (Chikatunov et al., 1999; Volkovitsh et al., 2000).

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Coraebus hastanus Gory & Laporte de Castelnau, 1839 is easily distinguished from the other species of the genus Corae- bus Gory & Laporte de Castelnau, 1839. It was divided into three subspecies, but the main diagnostic characters were vari- able. In order to understand the morphological variability and taxonomy of subspecies of C. hastanus, shape of elytral apex, lateral margin of elytra and the aedeagi were analyzed using geometric morphometric and traditional morphometric approaches. Based on the results and distribution patterns of the three subspecies, C. hastanus oberthueri Lewis, 1896 is treated as synonym of C. hastanus Gory & Laporte de Castelnau, 1839, and C. hastanus ephippiatus Théry, 1938 is ele- vated to species rank, and these two species are also redescribed and illustrated.

  • Mini Data Sheet on Agrilus Fleischeri
EPPO, 2019 Mini data sheet on Agrilus fleischeri Agrilus fleischeri was added to the EPPO A2 List in 2019. A full datasheet will be prepared, in the meantime you can view here the data which was previously available from the EPPO Alert List (added to the EPPO Alert List in 2018 – deleted in 2019). Agrilus fleischeri (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) Why: Agrilus fleischeri (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) is an Asian wood borer of poplars (Populus spp.). In parts of China (e.g. Liaoning province), A. fleischeri has become a destructive pest causing tree mortality in poplar plantations, in particular on Populus nigra var. italica (Lombardy poplar). Considering the importance of poplar in the EPPO region, and the fact that its wood is commonly used to make pallets, the NPPO of the United Kingdom suggested the addition of A. fleischeri to the EPPO Alert List. Where: A. fleischeri originates from East Asia. EPPO region: Kazakhstan, Russia (Eastern Siberia, Far East). Asia: China (Beijing, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Tianjin), Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu), Kazakhstan, Korea (Dem. People's Republic of), Korea (Republic of), Mongolia, Russia (Eastern Siberia, Far East). On which plants: Populus species, including Populus davidiana (Korean aspen), P. laurifolia (laurel-leaf poplar), Populus nigra var. italica (Lombardy poplar) and P. sieboldi (Japanese aspen). In the literature, Salix spp. (willows) are recorded as hosts but no data on damage could be found in the literature. Records of A. fleischeri on Quercus spp. are considered erroneous. In China, the two most common poplar species used in plantations are P. davidiana (native to China) and P. nigra var.
