The proliferation of slums throughout the city has created obstacles for development and today there are demands that the cut-off date for regularising hutments be extended to 2000. But, the existing law clearly stipulates that protection to slums can be given only if they existed prior to January 1, 1995. -

Habib Subhan Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University, India ABSTRACT: The postmodern era has observed a shift from what has so long been considered as fixed and static to nothing is constant or fixed like concepts. Taking such notion as the parameter postcolonial theorists, feminists, poststructuralists have tried to see and analyze various issues from different angles. Issues like identity, subjectivity, representation, authentic voices have got new perspectives. Like culture, body or sex is a site of conflict where individual’s identity is being contested endlessly. The ‘third gender’, which has long been marginalized or deprived of their identity, representation, true and authentic voice in the main stream of social and cultural milieu deserves the critical attention. ‘Third gender’ or the ‘People of In-between’ are considered not belonging to the general binary division of gender - male and female. Since long their plight is more like the ‘subaltern’. The Bollywood cinema has long been portraying the character of ‘third gender’ in various films. These films clearly reveal that their representation is biased, sensitive and stereotyping. The violation and violence, centered on issues of sex and body, is not only sexual violence in nature but it is a kind of denial of identity and voice in the society. They are judged and studied in terms of sexual behavior. -

The third gender in Indian subcontinent most commonly is identified as “Hijra” over the period of years through media representations and misrepresentations has come to be associated with either as neither male or female, impotent men who dress as females or deceitful characters. Adding the dismal socio-political and economic conditions of third gender in India and their traditional way of earning through alms, the stereotypical character of “Hijra” gets further institutionalized. This paper will however try to break from the stereotypical clutches of portraying the typical clichéd third gender on celluloid and try to analyze some path breaking movies which have been successful in representing very realistic aspects of third gender. The reference period for the study will be more than two decades from 1990-2010, whereby two representational movies from each decade and will studied and critically examined. The paper will seek to focus on the less stereotypical portrayals of third gender and will try to find if there is a gradual shift from the stereotypical generalizations in portrayal of third gender on Indian celluloid. -

(LGBT) in Hindi Cinema
Amity Journal of Media & Communication Studies (ISSN 2231 – 1033) Copyright 2017 by ASCO 2017, Vol. 7, No. 1 Amity University Rajasthan Gender, Sexuality and (Be) longing: The Representation of Queer (LGBT) in Hindi Cinema Pushpinder Kaur Punjabi University, India Abstract We do not yet live in a world free from homophobia, transphobia, prejudice and discrimination and we live in a world where majority wins and overpower the voices of the minority. In India, we need a space that listens to those who need to be heard. Sexual minority comprises of all those people who fall under the categories of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender and they are exactly that-a minority within our own homes, families, schools, institutions, communities, work places etc. Adding to their woes is Section 377 of the Indian penal Code which criminalises Homosexuality. Many of these problems leave many among them feeling isolated, afraid, depressed and even suicidal. So a space for LGBT is needed to look at these specific issues not from a hetero-normative perspective or with pre-conceived binary notions. LGBT is in fact short for LGBTTQQIIA+? It includes, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transexual, queer, questioning, intersex, intergender and asexuals. Films that depict reality are of supreme importance. It is also quite important that we start to desire for films that have characters belonging to the community, living a usual life, facing normal societal or personal conflicts and not discriminatory or oppressing ones. Cinema is an all-pervasive tool that reaches so many people at once and challenges the conditioning of the society and even in cinema, if members of LGBT community get casted as manipulative, negative and fearful characters; it simply reinforces the existing hatred in the real world. -
