1. ACTIVITIES REFLECTING GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTION

Karve Institute of Social Service was established on 9 November 1963 to commemorate the work done by the great visionary and social reformer, Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve. The Institute started with a certificate course in social work. Over the years, the scope of its work has expanded from the certificate course to post graduate degree in social work. Now the Institute is one of the premier institutes in social work education offering a post-graduate degree in social work as well as M. Phil. and Ph D in Social Work, all courses recognized by the University of Pune. The Institute also offers a Post-Graduate Diploma in Governance and Management of NGOs.

The Institute has a well-equipped research and consultancy cell established in the fond memory of the founder-secretary Shri. Bhaskerkaka Karve. Professional social work research projects are conducted for local/ national NGOs, State/ Central government departments as well as for national and international organizations. The institute is also a recognized consultancy agency of the GoM for rural drinking water and watershed programmes.

Apart from the social work degree programme, the institute is also an apex body recognized for capacity building training programmes for government functionaries and civil society organizations and Corporate Sectors.

As reflected in the name of the Institute, it has a commitment to social issues. Hence, over the years, the institute has developed field action projects in response to the needs of neighbouring communities and emerging social scenarios. All these projects are run with the help of trained staff, under the professional guidance of the faculty. These projects help in establishing evidence-based practice and also give opportunity to trainees to sharpen their skills.

The achievements of the Institute during these fifty years have been remarkable and are golden moments in the history of Karve Institute. The Institute has achieved significant milestones and established its ‘brand-value’ through its presence at the international and national levels and its excellent contribution in academics, research, consultancy and training, policy and programmed development. We admire the invaluable strengths of our esteemed faculty, the Director and all the non - teaching staff in making these achievements possible.

On the occasion of Golden Jubilee year, the Institute has organized various academic and cultural exchange events. All these programmes were worthy in terms of excellent event management and the gracious presence of international and national level stalwarts in the field of social work and social development. The sharing of their experiences, experiments and global perspectives have helped broaden the horizons of the Institute. I wish to place on record my appreciation for their immense contribution to each event. The Institute also produced an archival film documenting the journey of the Institute since its inception. The financial assistance of UGC, ICSSR, University of Pune, Corporate and NGO organizations made the realizations of our dream for this year possible. All these programmes have further strengthened the Institute’s image in the public domain.

In his valedictory plenary Dr. Sukhdeo Thorat, the Chairperson ICSSR reminded the participants of the indicators of ‘great people’enunciated by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who said that the intellectuals, knowledgeable person with their sincerity and openness are called eminent, but the people who use their knowledge for upliftment of poor should be considered real great persons. Dr. Sukhdeo Thorat highlighted that the Social Work Education can play a very important role in imbibing values in the professional social workers. The curriculum needs to be changed according to the changing circumstances. Purpose of education should be to take the professionals beyond the sectarian caste bound sensitivity and develop universal sensitivity.

Ms Puja Marwah, Director, Child Rights and You (CRY) elaborated the situation of children in caste, class, religion biases ridden Indian society which puts off the children’s willpower to rise above their situation. She highlighted the contradiction in the society that the countries from which representatives have participated here in the conference have population of children much lesser than the number of children in India. They have much more resources than those of the Indian professionals have at their disposal for working with marginalized children. The task is much tougher here. But there are good examples likeBal Panchayats, where children have set examples of their own development.

Including United Kingdom, Norway, Australia, Belgium, Egypt, Spain, Thailand and India around 72 delegates and many students participated in this conference. More than 40 papers were presented on various issues like ill effects of globalization, market oriented economic program and policies, privatization, and the marginalized women, dalit, adiwasi who are depend upon the natural resources for their survival.

Innerwheel Balwadi:

Balwadi is a field action project, which has completed its 38 years of service to the community. It was started in the year 1976 for the children from the lower socioeconomic groups with the support from Inner Wheel Club, Pune. This project was started to address a felt need of the community which was pre-primary education. Besides this, it was felt that pre-primary education will ensure better enrolment and retention in the schools. To consider the need of continuing education of the Balwadi children, the Institute has been liasoning with nearby schools of Karvenagar area which have the facility of high school as well as college. The effort of the Balwadi team, thus, is to ensure continuity in education of children. We aim at harmonious development of child’s personality and the child’s environment, in an atmosphere of happiness and love with the spirit of peace, dignity, tolerance, freedom and equality. As every child is unique, we want the children to grow to their fullest potential. Balwadi received the donation of Rs.1, 000/- from Inner wheel Club of Pune (Main) for the pre-school. The donation was used to purchase indoor games and free play activities.

In the year 2012-2013 the activities conducted in the project wereas follows:

Over last five years, the Institute was taking a close overview of the project and it was noticed that the enrollment in the Balwadi was reducing every year. This was mainly due to awareness about schooling among parents, who chose to enroll their children in nearby schools where admission upto 10th std. is secured.Looking back, the Institute felt that it had succeeded in its mission of creating awareness about formaleducation in the community. Hence the Management of the Institute took an informed decision to close the Balwadi Project. It was done in a systematic manner by taking regular meetings with parents, right from the beginning of the academic year and ensuring that all children could secure admissions in nearby schools in the following academic year starting in June 2013.

36. HEALTHY PRACTICES OF THE INSTITUTIONS: 1. Academic Planning – Decisions regarding work distribution, student enrichment progrmmes, departmental seminars or workshops are discussed in the faculty meeting. The decisions are taken through democratic deliberations. Each faculty member is expected to report in the faculty meeting regarding the completed activities. Other faculty members give their feedback and suggestions. Co- coordinators are appointed for each academic responsibility in order to smoothen the process and for decentralization of decisions. Co-ordinators are given the authority to monitor the academic activity and also are given the decision-making authority. These coordinators also are responsible for ensuring the quality of that particular activity. Academic time-table is monitored and through continuous review the delays or obstacles are identified and new strategies are evolved. 2.
