Miller Director of Neivs Bureau Patricia Brown, B.A. Librarian Estelle Brodman, Ph.D. HISTORY OF THE MEDICAL CENTER Washington University School of Medicine was formed in 1899 by the union of the first two medical schools established west of the Mississippi River, the Missouri Medical College and the St. Louis Medical College, popularly known as McDowell's College and Pope's College because of the close identification of the two schools with their respective Deans, McDowell of the Missouri Medical College and Pope of the
