Conference Overview For over a generation, China has been implementing daring reforms and advancing firmly towards a modern market economy (mixed economy) based on the aspirations of the growing middle class. While still nominally an “emerging market” of the East, it occupies a special place as a G-2 country since the onset of this Great Recession globally. As we all are in the same "Great Recession" boat of the global economy, this global-based Conference at the heart (Wuhan) of the “Middle Kingdom” of the Chinese nation focuses on collaborative and interactive roles of governments and transnational corporations in the modern social and economic development of China and emerging markets in general. In particular, China's rapid integration into the global economy has created tremendous and ill-understood new opportunities for all the global economy and institutional stakeholders. Featuring top experts, this conference, jointly organized by the School of Economics and Management in Wuhan University in China and Journal of Transnational Corporations Review in the Ottawa United Learning Academy in Canada, offers a unique forum for business, government and academia leaders and analysts to discuss and practically assess the existing opportunities and how to optimally advance them in the near future. 2. About Wuhan and the Yangtze River Cruise Wuhan, situated in the heart of China, is the capital of the Hubei province with a population of about 9.1 million (per 2006 census). It is a modern and energetic metropolis with unlimited possibilities, and a commercial center of finance, industry, trade and science, with many international companies located here. Having scientific, technological and educational institutions such as Laser City and the Wuhan University, the city is also known as an intellectual and innovation center. Located at the crossroads of central China, Wuhan is also a transportation hub for air, railway as well as ferry traffic. The distance from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou is more or less equal. And the giant Yangtse River (Chang Jiang), the world's third longest river, and the Han River pass through the city, and divide the cities into 3 towns: Hankou, Hanyang, and Wuchang. Pearls of this excellent city, the city of the “White Clouds and Yellow Crane” legend With a history that dates back more than 3,500 years, Wuhan is one of the “Chinese Famous Cities of History and Culture”. Ideophones are defined as a set of words that are phonologically and morphologically marked and depict some form of sensory image (Dingemanse 2011b). Middle Chinese has a large body of ideophones, whose domains range from the depiction of sound, movement, visual and other external senses to the depiction of internal senses (cf. Dingemanse 2012a). There is some work on modern variants of Sinitic languages (cf. Mok 2001; Bodomo 2006; de Sousa 2008; de Sousa 2011; Meng 2012; Wu 2014), but so far, there is no encompassing study of ideophones of a stage in the historical development of Sinitic languages. The purpose of this study is to develop a descriptive model for ideophones in Middle Chinese, which is compatible with what we know about them cross-linguistically. The main research question of this study is “what are the phonological, morphological, semantic and syntactic features of ideophones in Middle Chinese?” This question is studied in terms of three parameters, viz. the parameters of form, of meaning and of use.

Remaking Chineseness: The Transition Of Inner Asian Groups In The Central Plain During The Sixteen Kingdoms Period And Northern Dynasties Abstract This dissertation aims to examine the institutional transitions of the Inner Asian groups in the Central Plain during the Sixteen Kingdoms period and Northern Dynasties. Starting with an examination on the origin and development of Sinicization theory in the West and China, the first major chapter of this dissertation argues the Sinicization theory evolves in the intellectual history of modern times. This chapter, in one hand, offers a different explanation on the origin of the Sinicization theory in both China and the West, and their relationships. In the other hand, it incorporates Sinicization theory into the construction of the historical narrative of Chinese Nationality, and argues the theorization of Sinicization attempted by several scholars in the second half of 20th Century. The second and third major chapters build two case studies regarding the transition of the central and local institutions of the Inner Asian polities in the Central Plain, which are the succession system and the local administrative system.

    Editorial Report 1. This issue of the Bulletin of the Department of Chinese Literature, National Chengchi University (“the Bulletin”) received 21 submissions (15 from Taiwan, six from overseas). Two submissions were rejected and returned during the preliminary editorial committee review. Of the remaining 18 submissions (excluding the feature article submission), six submissions were selected through double-blind reviews by two extramural experts for each submission. Excluding the feature article submission, six submissions out of 20 were selected, resulting in an acceptance rate of 30 percent, and a rejection rate of 70 percent. This issue publishes eight formal academic articles, with three articles by full-time teachers of the Department of Chinese Literature, National Chengchi University, the rate for internal release is 37.5 percent. The Bulletin aims to enhance academic standards and expand research horizons, we sincerely invite submissions from all scholars of Chinese studies. 2. In this issue, we feature “Writing on Landmarks: From Yellow Crane Tower to Phoenix Terrace” by Professor Shang Wei, Du Family Professor of Chinese Culture, Columbia University. This feature article begins with a close reading of Li Bai’s “Ascending Phoenix Terrace in Jinling” to explore his varied responses to Cui Hao’s “Yellow Crane Tower.” Tracing a series of poems related to the same subject, it examines the poetic practice of writing about scenic spots or landmark sites during the Tang dynasty, with reference to the literary discourse on this practice and other pertinent topics. By tracing a series of poems related to the same subject, Professor Shang tells the story of how poets during the Tang dynasty imitate and compete through writing about scenic spots or landmark sites, paying attention to the subtly complicated relationship between literary text and critical discourse, questioning the ideal mode of extempore verse and its premise, at the same time exploring what classical poetry can and cannot do, its potential and boundary.

    ISSN 1799-2591 Theory and Practice in Language Studies, Vol. 5, No. 9, pp. 1971-1975, September 2015 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17507/tpls.0509.29 Review on Frontier Poetry Research Ying Zhao Institute of Chinese Language and Literature, Southwest University, Chongqing, China Abstract—This Essay reviews the research on the concept of Frontier Poetry since 1980s, and the researches on the origin development, poet writings, and aesthetic characteristics of Frontier Poetry. Three propositions are put forward based on these reviews: firstly, frontier poetry needs to be defined scientifically and accurately so that further researches can be carried out. Secondly, the origin of frontier poetry needs to be differentiated scientifically. Lastly, more attention needs to be put on the research on frontier poetry as a unique style of poetry. Poetry researches should not be restricted to Tang Dynasty. Fore and aft, transverse researches and interdiscipline researches on frontier poetry need to be carried out. Index Terms—frontier poetry, origin development, poet writings, aesthetic characteristics I. INTRODUCTION There are many styles of Chinese ancient poetry. For example, pastoral poetry, love poetry, praise poetry, and frontier poetry. Frontier poetry has a long history, and becomes an important component of Chinese ancient poetry. Different from other poetry styles, frontier poetry expresses the political life of the individuals, the political relations and actions of the countries and political groups. In addition, frontier poetry has an obvious frontier region characteristic as it takes frontier as the main object. Xu Zong writes in The History of Tang Poems: Frontier Poetry is the outcome of the culture of a special region.

Northern Song Reflections on the angT Abstract NORTHERN SONG REFLECTIONS ON THE TANG Jeffrey Rice Victor Mair In the mid-eleventh century Chinese intellectuals argued about history, and left their competing narratives to us in print. They contested how history should be written, and what relevant lessons ought to be adapted to the changing society of Song 宋 (960-1279) dynasty China. They were particularly concerned with the history of the long-lasting Tang 唐 (618-907) dynasty. They revised the official history of the Tang on a variety of levels: they used primary sources differently to analyze evidence, developed a new literary language to write historical prose, employed editorial critiques differently to draw political morals by analogy to historical events, and harnessed new print technology to disseminate their views to a wider audience. This dissertation analyzes the revisions to the history of the Tang produced in the eleventh century on each of these levels: historiography, linguistics, politics, and print culture. These elements all functioned to reinvent the ancient ideal of the Confucian scholar in terms that advanced the interests of the burgeoning class of literati officials in Northern Song China.

Emphasis will thus be placed on 1) learning the conventions of particular genres and subgenres, 2) analyzing the stylistic qualities of individual poets and poems through an examination of their manipulation of these conventions, and a comparison with other voices in the tradition, and 3) recognizing the larger stylistic shifts and literary concerns that demarcate the four literary periods (Early, High, Mid and Late Tang). Readings from a selection of modern criticism will be helpful for understanding individual poets, issues and themes. Primary texts and commentaries are in Chinese, so proficiency in reading both modern and classical Chinese is required. Requirements and Grading: 1. Participation (10%): Participation in the translation and analysis of poems in class is mandatory. Students will need to come to class having read and translated all of the assigned poems and critical literature. 2. Class presentation (20%): Each week 1-2 students will be delegated to present on the weekly secondary readings (highlighted in bold). These brief presentations should briefly summarize and critically analyze the main arguments of the readings and pose questions about them. All other students will read in advance the selected materials and be ready to pose questions about the reading.
