Superintendent Summary Board Meeting – December 19, 2017

Public Hearing The 2017 Tax Levy Public Hearing was called to order at 5:45 p.m. Board President Absher asked for public comment with no public comments being offered. The Hearing was adjourned at 5:50 p.m.

Regular Meeting The regular meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m.

Example of Educational Excellence Dr. Wayne Griffith, MHS Ag Instructor and FFA Sponsor, shared information about the MHS FFA club. The Board heard from the following MHS FFA members: Aubree Ketring, Ashleigh Biggs, Grant Swatscheno, Caleb Humphey, Chapter Reporter and Aaron Duncan, Section 24 FFA President. The Board and Unit #2 are very proud of the MHS FFA program and appreciative of Dr. Griffith’s efforts in building a successful FFA program at Marion High School.

Closed Session The Board entered closed session for the purposes of litigation and the purchase or lease of real property for the use of the public body.

Consent Agenda The Board voted 7-0 to approve the consent agenda. a. Minutes – the minutes from the November 14, 2017 regular meeting and closed session meeting. b. Bills – the November supplementary bills and the December bills for payment as presented. c. Donations i. Skybridge Americas, Inc. – Coca-Cola to Longfellow - $105.40 ii. First United Methodist Women to District - $200 to help provide glasses to a student(s) d. University of Saint Francis Affiliation Agreement e. Fundraiser – MHS PBIS Black Light Dance

South Seven Conference The Board discussed the Centralia High School Board request to remove Belleville Althoff from the South Seven Conference and discussed the Granite City H.S. request to join the South Seven Conference. No action was taken on either topic.

Personnel The Board voted 7-0 to approve below personnel recommendations.

EMPLOYMENT Coaching Jayme Midgett, MHS Assistant Coach, effective for the 2018 spring season.

Anthony Stevens, MHS Robotics Team Assistant Coach, effective immediately.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE Garrett Elders, MHS Alternative Learning Teacher, a medical leave of absence beginning December 5, 2017 and ending approximately January 2, 2018.

Tracy Ross, Custodian assigned to Jefferson Elementary, a medical leave of absence beginning December 6, 2017.

RESIGNATIONS Holly Boyd, Secretary assigned to Marion High School, effective January 12, 2018.

Tomas Brandt, Part-Time Marion High School Business Teacher, effective January 1, 2018.

Susan Bush, Cook assigned to Washington Elementary, effective December 20, 2017.

Erica Cadle, Secretary assigned to Marion High School , effective January 2, 2018.

RETIREMENT Terry Jennings, Custodian assigned to Marion High School, effective February 5, 2018.

2017 Levy Resolution The Board voted 7-0 to approve the 2017 Levy Resolution as presented.

Natural Gas Contract The Board voted 7-0 to approve the two year contract with CIMA starting September 2018 as presented.

District Architect Selection The Board voted 7-0 to approve Baysinger Architects as the district architect and contract pending District attorney review.

Board Policy Review The Board was presented with policy modifications to review for potential action at the January meeting.

MHS CTE Course The Board voted 7-0 to approve the new MHS CTE Fire Science/Fire-Fighting course as presented. Special thanks to Brian Burgess for presenting the information and will also be teaching the course next fall.

Technology The current Unit #2 website will be replaced with a new updated website for the second semester.

Maintenance Report Special thanks to all the maintenance staff that have been very busy over the past couple of weeks setting up for all the holiday programs and then quickly cleaning up following each program.

Superintendent Report Dr. Oates commented that he enjoyed all the holiday programs and continues to be impressed with the level of talent displayed by our students and the effort put forth by our music directors and teachers - fortunate to be a part of Unit #2 and proud of our staff and students.

Academic Marion High School The following students have been named Class of 2018 State Scholars: Abigail Bayer, Davis, Bradley, Madison Brown, Samuel Childers, David Fletcher, Zachary Glass, Haley Gooch, Quincy Gordon, John Hafford, Jacob Janz, Abby Mausey, Natalie Mausey, Amber Miller, Hannah Miller, Addison Randolph, Jacob Rice, James Shore, Tristan Stricklin, Steven Thompson, Alec Tonazzi, Haley VanHorn, and Karlee Webb.

Clubs/Extracurricular Marion High School – Jackson Connor, Jaden Lacy and Terrell Henderson were named to the Pyramid Plus All-Tournament Team.

MHS Continued: Model UN – Competed at the SEMO Conference and received three 1st place awards for Best Delegate (Benjamin Shore, Bwalya Mwansa, and Tyler Short) two 2nd place awards for Outstanding Delegate (Deven Madhani and Natalie Mausey) and a 1st place in the essay contest (Abby Mausey).

Soccer – Tyson Stoecklin was named Boys Soccer All-Sectional and 1st Team AllConference along with Kameron Dover, Josh Szidik, and Tyler VanZant. Hunter Smith was named 2nd Team All-Conference.

Tennis – Ana Cuartas, Elaina Vanderflught and Nicole Szidik were named to the Coaches Association All-South Girls’ Team.

Marion Junior High School Band – The following students were selected to attend the All-District Festival hosted by the Illinois Music Educators Association: Alex Gott (1st chair trumpet), Noah Walters (leader of the baritone sax section), Reid Williamson (highest scoring trombone player), Kennadee Gabby, Abby Surburg, Mia Parrilli, Allie Adkins, Matt Surburg, Luke Cooper, Will Absher, Abby Koerber, Nic Rich, Cloe Stark, Cameron Hankey, Kaia Binkley, and Logan Owens.

Band – The following students were selected to attend the All-District Jazz Festival sponsored by the Illinois Music Educators Association: Abby Koerber, Colin Beers, River Doss, Dante Rankins, Allie Adkins, Kaia Binkley, Matt Surburg, Alex Gott, Caiden Treece, Luke Cooper, Reid Williamson, and Noah Walters. Reid and Noah were the highest scoring musicians in their section.

Choir – The following students were selected to the ILMEA Junior Chorus: Olivia Gribble, Ella Hudspath, Khloe Kimble, Jace Slone, and Michalee Smith-Clevenger.

Robotics – Attended their first competition and won the Core Values award. Team members were Abigail Gribble, Alli Dean, Ariana Kautz, Haley Pennington, Isabella Provenzano, Jennifer McDermott, Kaela Binkley, Olivia Allen, Sarah Kuh, and Krysten Tackett.

Foundation Grant Recipients Continued: Melissa Tanner, Christy Johnson, Karen Powell, Robyn Ziegler, Travis Vickery, Nicki Ashmore, Elizabeth Byassee-Shore, Bryce Parks, Lori Tonazzi and Kendra Wofford. There Were 18 grants awarded for a total amount of $9,276.67.

Treasurer’s Report The District is 41% of the way through the fiscal year as of November 30, 2017. The Education Fund expenditures are at 39.84% and Operations and Maintenance Fund expenditures are at 41.73%. Expenditures for all district funds are at 47.58%
