Missouri University of Science and Technology is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, joining the league in the 2005-06 academic year as part of a league expansion that brought three institu- tions into the league. The GLVC, which is constituted of 13 institutions for the 2008-09 season, made its name as a power in NCAA Division II but has enjoyed success in many sports and now the league can claim itself as one of the nation’s top Division II leagues.

The addition of Edwardsville, Quincy, Wisconsin-Parkside and Missouri-St. Louis in the mid-1990s allowed the GLVC to become an immediate national power in several sports such as men’s and women’s soccer, women’s and .

At the start of the 2005-06 season, Missouri S&T, Drury University and Rockhurst University – all of whom have had a good deal of success at the regional and national levels in various sports – have enhanced the league’s reputation at the NCAA Divi- sion II level. The conference will undergo another expansion in the 2009-10 season when the University of Illinois-Springfield and Maryville University become members of the GLVC.

The league’s staff has also increased along the way, with the GLVC hiring its first full-time commissioner in 1996. In 2001, an associate commissioner was also added to the full-time conference staff and the GLVC’s first full-time sports information director was added in the summer of 2006.

The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC.

Since formulation of the conference, seven schools have joined the league: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994) and UM-St. Louis (1995). Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 season. IPFW left the GLVC following the 2000-01 academic year and SIU Edwardsville left the conference after the 2007-08 season. MISSOURI S&T SOCCER The conference expanded to include women’s basketball in 1983-84 and immediately established a women’s-men’s doubleheader format in league play to ensure maximum exposure for both squads. The GLVC plays its games primarily on Thursday and Saturday nights in November, December, January and February.

The GLVC can claim schools in all of the Midwest major media markets, with schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (Wisconsin-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Cincinnati (Northern Kentucky), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst), Springfield, Mo. (Drury) and St. Louis (Missouri-St. Louis/Maryville).

Miner soccer team shooting for big things in upcoming season

After a one-year hiatus, Missouri S&T’s men’s soccer team made it back into the Great Lakes Valley Confer- ence Tournament last season. The Miners found a way into the tournament by getting a win or tie in eight of their 12 conference games – winning three of the games by a goal – but fell 1-0 in the opening round to eventual national semifinalist Northern Kentucky when the Norse scored late in the contest.

Even though the Miners’ stay in the tournament lasted only the one game, it did underscore two things about the team heading into the upcoming 2009 season – that it could compete on the same level as the top teams in the conference, but it is a team that has a need for more goal scoring. The Miners will have a good number of players back from last year’s squad, as a relatively young squad gained valuable experience in a conference with three NCAA Division II Tournament qualifiers. Add to that a recruiting class that has several accomplished goal scorers and the Miners appear to be in a position to start moving towards the upper echelon of the GLVC.

“We showed that we can compete with every team in the league last season,” said Miner head coach Joe Ahearn, who is entering his third season at the helm. “ But we also showed our youth and we were a bit naïve in finishing games late in the season. I have a lot of confidence in this group as we move forward into this season.”

Missouri S&T returns three of its top four scorers from a year ago in forwards Mario Calderon and Nick Landon and back Andy Held. Landon and Calderon had four goals apiece in the 2008 season, while Held scored three times.

Calderon and Landon will get some help up front from a number of newcomers, headed by Saint Louis Univer- sity transfer David Kekec and incoming freshmen Peter Vaccaro, Peter Haw, Jervis Atagana and Mason Morawitz. Kekec, who spent two seasons at SLU, earned all-state honors as a high school senior when he scored 30 points at Ladue High School.

Vaccaro and Haw, both products of Parkway West High School, combined to score 47 times last season while Morawitz and Atagana – who were also prep teammates – each scored eight times in their senior year at Columbia’s Hickman High School.

Meanwhile, Held will anchor the back line of defense with a number of returners that held their opponents to just 24 goals in 19 games a year ago.

Held will be joined by juniors Kenny Gravlin and Sam Shaffer and sophomores J.J. Bilyew, Jonathan Goecker and Zack Hay. In addition, the Miners have also bolstered this group with the addition of freshmen Spencer Brink- meyer and Brian Seawright to the corps after both earned numerous post-season honors at the high school ranks in 2008.

They will work in front of a goalkeeping team that is headed by Pat McNamee, last season’s GLVC “Freshman of the Year” after posting a 0.97 goals against average and a S&T single-season record seven shutouts. The Min- ers also have two returners who will compete for playing time in goal in senior Matt Wilson and sophomore Donny Gesell.

S&T will have a number of players competing for spots in the midfield, which will feature several returners and talented newcomers. Among the returners are seniors Tony Lambropoulos, Brian Tucker, sophomores J.J. Bilyeu, Trent Doerner, Ryan Muich – all of whom played in at least 17 games apiece last season as freshmen – as well as fellow sophomores Joe Jordan and Kyle Sneed.

MISSOURI S&T SOCCER MISSOURI S&T The class of newcomers includes Nicolas Solano, a transfer from North Carolina State who brings a strong back- ground to the program; Josh Bennett, an all-state selection at St. Charles’ Duchesne High School; Caleb Collier, an all-district performer at Kickapoo High in Springfield; Ben Glover, a top defender at Fort Zumwalt West; and Kyle Schraier, who played for a strong team at Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis.

Lady Miners Excited for 2009 campaign

After posting the most wins in a season since 2003, the Missouri S&T Lady Miner’s soccer team is looking to build on that improvement in the upcoming campaign. S&T went 7-8-2 last year and has 19 returning letterwinners off that squad so it’s not hard to see why fifth year head coach Jon Kiester is opti- mistic about what is ahead this fall.

“Anytime you can bring back 19 letterwinners you are obviously pretty excited,” Kiester said. “We are still really young though, so there is still kind of that nervous excitement because you don’t really know how everybody is going to respond. But, it’s an optimistic one because every one of our returners has college experience.”

The Lady Miners, who were picked to finish 11th in the GLVC’s pre-season poll, return their top six scorers from a year ago led by forward Brooke Ryan and midfielders Melia Miller and Melissa Young. Ryan led the way with eight goals and 18 points, while Miller and Young had four goals apiece and 14 and 13 points respectively. Miller led the team in assists with six while Young was tied for second on the squad with five assists.

That trio will be helped up top by returners Valerie Crews, Hillary Griffith, Leah Williams and Rachel Wille along with newcomer Lauren Todd. Crews and Griffith scored three goals apiece in 2008 while Williams was tied with Young in assists. Todd was a four time all-conference selection for Ray- town South High School in Raytown, Mo.

The Lady Miners will have a lot of versatility in the midfield this season with players that can play multiple positions. Morgan Lockowitz, Rachel Moore, Heather Ferstl and Wille will all compete for play- MISSOURI S&T SOCCER ing time in the midfield along with freshmen Colleen Lewis and Lindsey Schmucker.

“We’ve got a lot of kids that can play in the midfield, which is a good problem to have because it gives us some depth, some choices and some options,” Kiester said.

The back line will be anchored by three returning starters led by last season’s All-GLVC third-team selection Sabrina Drennan. She will be joined on the back line with Joanna Kovarik and Paige Smothers while Shelly Ekholm will likely be the fourth starter on the backline according to Kiester. Jenna Jeffryes, Kim Morris, Lewis and Schmucker will all see time there as well.

The Lady Miners return three quality goalkeepers who all saw considerable time in the net last sea- son. Kelsey Kurilla started nine games in net last season, stopping 44 shots and posting a goals against average of 1.68 with two combined shutouts. Stacey Luquette and Catherine Swift will also see time in goal this season. Luquette started six games in 2008 stopping 75 percent of the shots she faced and a GAA of 1.75. Swift was 3-1 last season with a 2.16 goals against average.

S&T opens its season at home on Saturday, August 29 at home against former MIAA rival Southwest Baptist at 12 p.m.
