Adopted 12/16/99. SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY The Board of Education believes that it is the responsibility of Carbondale Community High School District 165 to provide educational opportunities and experiences which will enable all students to develop their talents and capabilities so that they may be able to assume their responsible roles in a democratic society and to apply their knowledge to a lifetime of continuous learning. This philosophy places emphasis upon the total development of the student, recognizing the dignity and worth of each individual and serving to enhance within each student a sense of responsibility, tolerance, and freedom. We, the Board of Education, believe that to translate this philosophy into reality requires cooperation, communication, and continuous effort from the student, parents, faculty, and administration. CONTACTING TEACHERS AT SCHOOL If parents have questions, comments or concerns regarding their student’s academic experience, they should initially contact the teacher or school counselor. This can be accomplished by contacting the school switchboard (457-3371 ext. 275 or 0). The switchboard operators will transfer the call to the departmental voicemail or take a message. The teacher will return the call at the earliest convenient time. Parents may also e-mail teachers through the Tyler SISK12 portal or using the e-mail directory available on the school website. Individuals with disabilities should notify the Superintendent or Principal if they have a disability which will require special assistance of services 5 and, if so, what services are required. This notification should occur as far as possible before the school sponsored function, program or meeting. Carbondale Community High School has installed a telecommunication device for the deaf (TTD) to assist hearing impaired applicants and employees. The telephone is located in the Principal’s Office. The phone number is (618) 457-3371. Incoming calls are handled through the regular CCHS district switchboard (ext. 275). Publication of this notice began in October of 1993 and will continue annually through a newsletter which is distributed to parents, faculty, staff and various community agencies and the media. In addition, this notice will also be contained and in all future Student-Parent-Faculty Handbooks, and in all appropriate district publications. FOREWARD FROM THE ADMINISTRATION On behalf of District #165, we welcome you to Carbondale Community High School for the 2018-2019 school year. Our goal as administrators is to add to CCHS’ long tradition of excellence. We believe that by supporting our faculty, students, parents, and community, our school will continue to create and refine a learning environment which is second to none. This handbook is designed to outline the many services offered at CCHS, and to identify procedures regarding student rights and responsibilities. We believe that the rules contained in this handbook are critical to the 6 maintenance of an environment which balances the need for institutional structure with our students’ need for freedom and autonomy. We want students to enjoy their academic and co-curricular experiences at CCHS. At the same time, every student will be expected to conduct themselves in such a way as to ensure that CCHS remains an effective, healthy, safe, and enjoyable place. A companion booklet entitled Course Description Book contains information regarding graduation requirements, course descriptions, registration, scheduling, and other curricular-academic information. This booklet is distributed to incoming and to upperclassmen during spring registration.

    WWW.EIUPANTHERS.COM HEAD COACH MIKE MILLER Eastern Illinois University head coach Mike Miller has a history of turning programs around and as he enters his third season at the helm of the Panthers program he appears to have the fortunes of the EIU program headed in the right direction. Hired in mid-April of 2005 after fi ve years as the associate head coach at Kansas State University, Miller has already produced two Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in his short tenure at EIU. In addition his fi rst full recruiting class in 2006 was rated as the best in the OVC by HoopScoop.com while also ranking in the Top 100 recruiting classes nationally. Among the seven new faces Miller and his staff were able to bring in among that top class were the school’s fi rst freshman to lead the program in scoring in the NCAA Division I era in Romain Martin and only the second freshman to lead the team in rebounding as a NCAA Division I school in Ousmane Cisse. Originally from Monmouth, Illinois, Miller has always had ties to the deep tradition of basketball in the State of Illinois and surrounding region. He and his staff (all local products themselves) have emphasized getting the best talent in the area that fi ts their system. In 2007 they have once again accomplished that with two top recruits from Michigan and Wisconsin. Miller’s second season at EIU got off to a rocky start with eight new faces on the roster learning how to play in a new system.
