When did you know you wanted to be a teacher? I knew since grade school that I someday wanted to Coach. I have always been a huge sports person and that was always my passion. I became a guidance counselor after working in a doctor’s office for 11 years. Six of those years, I also coached volleyball here which was difficult. A position opened up and Sister Jan hired me which made working on campus and coaching much easier. Where did you go to college and what degrees do you hold? Southwest Missouri State University which is now called Missouri State University. I have a degree in psychology. Have you always lived in Belleville? I have lived in Belleville for the majority of my life. After college I did live a few years in Webster Groves, Missouri, then moved to Springfield, Missouri and coached at Missouri State for five years, and then moved back to Belleville. During the time I lived in Webster Groves and Springfield, I did live 3-5 months in Minneapolis, Minnesota while playing professional volleyball. Was there any other career you had thought about doing? I changed my major many times. I started out wanting to be a PE teacher which would work out well with my desire to coach. I changed to accounting, then to being a speech therapist. While taking all the psychology classes for the speech communications major, I found those so interesting that I decided to stick with that. F S- M. W: G D What is your favorite part about being a Guidance Counselor? This school has been such an amazing part of my life. It made me the person I am now. My four years here as a student made me grow up and provided me with so many memories (good and drama filled as most teenage years are). If I could come back here and do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat. Why did you choose Althoff Catholic? I didn’t have a choice on where I was going to high school. Why did I choose to work here? There is nothing better than working at the place that formed you as a person. Giving back to this school has been very rewarding to me. What sports do you coach here this year? I coached the volleyball team since 1996. I was the JV coach at first, moved up to the varsity coach, retired but was asked to come back & help again. I did that as JV coach for a few more years and now I just volunteer as the assistant varsity coach. It’s a tough thing to give up. Were you a good student yourself? I was an okay student. I had a couple C’s on my report cards but mostly B’s and some A’s. I look back at that now and wish I would have applied myself. F S- M. W: G D Who was your favorite teacher as a child? My favorite teachers were Celeste (Sonnenberg) Furmanek in grade school and Mary Kloess in high school. They both helped me be the athlete and lady I am today. They taught me how to be a leader, deal with adversity, how to work hard, and compete. I am forever indebted to them. What is something unique that we may not know? I have coached at Althoff, Missouri State University, and Washington University in St. Louis. I was drafted in 1987 to play professional volleyball in Minnesota. I am sensitive, have a big heart, hate to upset people, and hate when people don’t get along. Any advice you can offer to encourage your students to be successful? The choices you make today will affect your tomorrow. Life can be short as I am finding out. My sister was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 63. This has changed my life as well as now because I have realized that the little things in life, the petty stuff, the negative stuff, is all not worth it. Move on and live as every day is precious because it is. V f M S F Astronomy Monthly News Written by Mr. Morris

A new radio telescope in British Columbia’s Okanagan valley has detected 13 new sources of mysterious extragalactic phenomena known as fast radio bursts. The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment or CHIME picks up these radio signatures and powerful spikes of radio emissions emanating from galaxies way beyond our own Milky Way just recently. CHIME was developed to map interstellar hydrogen, thus delving into the mystery of potential dark matter in the universe. This awesome new telescope is located at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory near Penticton, British Columbia. The speculation is that we have discovered rotating neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields, which would be a really cool first. R A C SWIC

Congratulations to our students who participated in the Regional Academic Challenge at SWIC! Seniors Michal Miller and Gabby Matthew were medalists with a 2nd place finish in Biology and third place finish in English respectively. S S R

Newsletter club is a collaboration between the moderator, student volunteers, and the community. The students try very hard to cover every event that they are able. However, as many of you probably know, the students have very busy schedules and are unable to be everywhere all of the time. We rely on our Althoff community- coaches, players, moderators, teachers, parents, students, etc- to send us information or pictures they are willing to share and would like to included.

Please keep i mind that we are doing all we can to cover as much as we can in a few short weeks and the students schedules are often not very flexible. Please, if you have anything you would like included in the newsletter or the yearbook, send by email or google drive link to [email protected] J N! If you would like to join newsletter or yearbook, see Mrs. Smith for an application Hghuguigytfytftyfytf
