A HISTORY OF HAT CREEK PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1742-1953 BY SYDNOR FRANKL IN FOSTER, JR . A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF RICID·WND IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN HISTORY ... LIBRARY UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND VIRGINIA AUGUST, 1954 PREFACE All the records of the early history of Hat Creek were destroyed in a very unfortunate fire in 1854. The first two volumes of the present records are kept in storage at the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. The third volume, covering the period from 1902 to 194o, will probably be sent there for safe storage in the very near future. Em ploying every available source, the writer has attempted to give a chronological account of the events surrounding Hat Creek from ifs founding in 1742, through the end of 1953. It would have been impossible to compile the data for this thesis and get it in a readable form if it had not been for the cooperation of those who possessed the records and a knowledge of some of the background to the founding of Hat Creek.

THE FAMILY OF HOGE A GENEALOGY COMPILED BY JAMES HOGE TYLER EDITED AND PUBLISHED BY JAMES FULTON HOGE MCMXXVII JOS. J. STONE & CO., PRINTERS, GREENSBORO. N. C. '' PEOPLE WILL NOT LOOK FORWABD TO POSTERITY WHO NEVER LOOK ANCESTORS.,, -Burke. PREFACE On an annual pilgrimage to the hills of Virginia-. my ancestral mecca, where for me the character and accomplish ments of my forbears are identified with the land - I saw a copy of a manuscript written by the late James Hoge Tyler, former governor of Virginia. It was a family history or genealogy. Governor Tyler had devoted a goodly portion of years to bringing the data together and making of it_ a con tinuous record, but had never, although intended, put it in form to permit distribution among all members of the family. I obtained the manuscript and had it copied. It seemed to me that the value of the work should be measured by its ser vice and that, lest the labor be lost, it should be made avail able to the many hundreds of the family scattered afar. -- With the encouragement of my Virginia relations wliose hospitality I was then enjoying I set about publishing the manuscript in form for general distribution.

Fighting for their right not only to be heard, but to be accepted as a viable intellectual community in Virginia, the people of the backcountry established academies and institutions of higher learning to evidence their intellectual vitality as a group.2 As establishment of these enlightened academies advanced, there ensued an anomalous educational occurrence in Revolutionary Virginia that has received no extensive scholarly treatment. Under normal societal conditions, educational and intellectual trends begin in major cities and centers of commerce.

PREFACE What are the origins and the fortunes of any idea that has taken shape? These must be interesting questions always, and not least so in the case of an academic institution in a new country. Southside Virginia has been a tobacco country from the first. Who have been those of the region that have been formally identified with efforts looking to the maintenance of the academic tradition? The following pages give an answer for Hampden Sidney College, which, with William and Mary and Washington and Lee, has survived in Virginia from a colonial foundation. Hampden Sidney and Washington and Lee, repre- senting the south and the west in the State, mark the beginnings of the positive Revolution ; the history of William and Mary, stand- ing for the colony, is now dim with the circumstances of age.

A most likely beginning point seemed to be a life of the ’’founder" of Union Theological Seminary, Dr. John Holt Rice, whose definitive biography remains to be written. The short account of Dr. Rice's life which occurs in William Maxwell's A Memoir of the Rev. John H. Rice. D.D., and the more specific account of this notable man which occurs in Foote's Sketches of Virginia (2nd Series) together with brief appreciations which have appeared from time to time, constitute a very inadequate portrait of one of the greatest men of the Presbyterian Church in America. The series of Historical Transcripts projected by the Library was envisioned as a sequence of pamphlets of some 40-50 pages each.

THE PLANTING OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH « IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA PRIOR TO THE ORGANIZATION OF Winchester Presbytery, DECEMBER 4, 1794. BY JAMES R. GRAHAM, D. D., PASTOR EMERITUS OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN WINCHESTER, VA. WINCHESTER, VA.: THE GEO. F. NORTON PUBLISHING CO. 1904. E Nt PUBLIC I - R 1911 L TO THE MEMBERS OF WINCHESTER PRESBYTERY — in harmonious fellowship with whom my en- tire ministry has been spent, and whose unvary- ing kindness has cheered the labors and sweet- tened the trials of a pastorate extending over a period of more than half a century—this volume is affectionately inscribed. PREFACE. It is with many misgivings that th ; s little volume is committed to the press. Its author claims no special importance for it. It does not pretend to be a complete and connected history of our Church, either in the period of which it treats, or in the territory to which it relates. He is fully aware of its fragmentary and imperfect character, and of the very limited interest that will be taken in its pages. His excuse for offering it to the public, already surfeited with books, is the fact that its publication has been insist- ently urged by judicious friends, who have some knowledge of its charac- ter. It is, moreover, his own conviction that such facts of our Presby- terial history as he has here tried to rescue from oblivion, should be put in a form most likely to secure their preservation. Though others have ex- plored the field in which he has labored, and have made most valuable contributions to the early history of our Church, he is persuaded that some particulars are here given that will be new to most of his readers, and that will have a special interest for the people of The Northern Neck.
