  • Many Faces of Albus Dumbledore in the Setting of Fan Writing
MANY FACES OF ALBUS DUMBLEDORE IN THE SETTING OF FAN WRITING: THE TRANSFORMATION OF READERS INTO “READER-WRITERS” AND THE IMPLICATIONS OF THEIR PRESENCE IN THE AGE OF ONLINE FANDOM by Midori Fujita A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (Children’s Literature) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) October 2014 © Midori Fujita, 2014 ii Abstract This thesis examines the dynamic and changing nature of reader response in the time of online fandom by examining fan reception of, and response to, the character Dumbledore in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Using the framework of reader reception theory established by Wolfgang Iser, in particular Iser’s conception of textual indeterminacies, to construct my critical framework, this work examines Professor Albus Dumbledore as a case study in order to illuminate and explore how both the text and readers may contribute to the identity formation of a single character. The research examines twenty-one selected Internet-based works of fan writing. These writings are both analytical and imaginative, and compose a selection that illuminates what aspect of Dumbledore’s characters inspired readers’ critical reflection and inspired their creative re-construction of the original story. This thesis further examines what the flourishing presence of Harry Potter fan community tells us about the role technological progress has played and is playing in reshaping the dynamics of reader response. Additionally, this research explores the blurring boundaries between authors and readers in light of the blooming culture of fan fiction writing.

Smith Chair Professor Angela Mariani Dr. Thomas Cimarusti Ralph Ferguson Dean of the Graduate School December, 2010 Copyright 2010, Kelli Rohlman Texas Tech University, Kelli Rohlman, December 2010 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS In the December 2003 issue of O Magazine, American critic and writer Bell Hooks said “Life-transforming ideas have always come to me through books.” The Harry Potter book series is one that many would claim has changed their lives in one way or another, and I am no exception. I would first like to thank, with the utmost respect and admiration, author J.K. Rowling for her literature that has inspired such a flourishing, creative, and beautiful community of fans. I would then like to register my complete gratitude to each of my informants; without their cooperation, generosity, and eagerness to share their incredible talents and expertise, this thesis would not have been possible. I would like to thank the hundreds of “wizards” that I have met or communicated with along my journey for their undying enthusiasm. I would also like to thank, specifically, Dinah Russell of the Wizrocklopedia.com for her assistance in general community support for my research. Thank you to Melissa Anelli of The Leaky Cauldron website and Pottercast for her accessibility and for answering all of my questions about Harry, A History on multiple occasions.

The tale of the online fandom is every bit as extraordinary as Harry’s own, and it THE ALL-IN-ONE AUDIOBOOK has left me with a feeling of awe and gratitude. At last, I know what was really happening out there—and it is wonderful.” —from the foreword by J. K. Rowling During the brief span of just one decade, hundreds of millions of perfectly ordinary people made history: they became the only ones who would remember what it was like when the Harry Potter saga was still unfinished. The unfolding story of a boy wizard changed the way books are read for all time. And as webmistress of the Leaky Cauldron, one of the most popular Harry Potter sites on the Internet, Melissa Anelli had a front row seat to it all. Whether it was hosting live PotterCasts at bookstores across the country or traveling to Edinburgh to interview J. K. Rowling personally, Melissa was at the center of the Harry Potter tornado. The Harry Potter books are a triumph of the imagination that restored the world’s sense of wonder and took on a magical life of their own. With remembrances from J. K. Rowling’s editors, agents, publicists, fans, and Rowling herself, Melissa Anelli takes us on a personal journey through every aspect of the Harry Potter phenomenon—from his very first spell to his lasting impact on the way we live and dream.

This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract: Made public on LiveJournal between 2004 and 2008, Shoebox Project (SBP) is a multimedia fanfic written by ladyjaida and dorkorific. The plot takes place before that of the Harry Potter novels, detailing the last two years of Hogwarts for the Marauders – Remus, Sirius, James, and Peter – conveying its narrative through prose, dialogue, handwritten letters, handwritten notes, pictures, and hand drawn sketches. SBP represents evidence of its authors negotiating of Remus Lupin. Specifically, through the layered processes of reading and writing, dorkorific and ladyjaida interpret and construct their understanding of authorship and their perception of the Potterverse. In so doing, they make clear the inherent fluidity of these concepts. However, despite the fluidity so central to SBP and to its fannish context, ladyjaida and dorkorific also work to actively reiterate binaries around gender, sex, and desire in their construction of Remus and Sirius’s sexuality.

  • Reconfiguring the Reader: Convergence and Participation in Modern Young Adult Fantasy Fiction
Reconfiguring the Reader: Convergence and Participation in Modern Young Adult Fantasy Fiction by Giuliana Fenech BA, MA A thesis submitted for the degree of PhD School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics University of Newcastle upon Tyne September 2014 1 Abstract This thesis explores digital-age literary and reading practices as they were influenced by participatory culture at the turn of the century. Participatory culture is analysed here through the work of Henry Jenkins, Hans Heino Ewers, Margaret Mackey and Katy Varnelis and is recognised as one in which individuals are socially connected to each other in an environment that offers support for creating and sharing interpretations and original works. It has relatively low barriers to artistic expression and civic participation, and fosters the sense of community growing around people’s common interests and ideologies, as expressed through performative manifestations such as gaming and fandom. Because juvenile fantasy fiction generally, and J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series (1997- 2007) specifically, were at the centre of significant developments in response to participatory culture, Rowling’s books are used as a case study on the basis of which changing practices of reading, writing and interpretation of story, principally by children and young people, are mapped and appraised. One aim of this thesis is to evaluate how far participatory culture has affected what it means to be a reader of a text that exists in multiple formats: how each version of the text constructs and addresses its readers/viewers/players/co-creators, and the dynamics and interdependence between the different versions. A second but related aim is to test the claims of new media theorists, including Janet Murray, Pierre Lévy and Marie-Laure Ryan, among others, to establish how far texts, readers and the processes of reading have in fact changed.

Throughout the examination, the paper concludes the answer to be that there are certain ideas or themes derived from the books that are of great concern to many people whatever their culture or society is. These themes according to the study perhaps the reason behind this increasing concern of Harry Potter as it attracted both young and adult readers. It also argues Harry’s and Lord Voldemort’s moral choices in life, particularly the choice between good and evil. Moreover, the paper sheds light on the importance of sacrificial parental love which the writer considers as a moral philosophy to live by, and Rowling’s own image of woman. Introduction J.K. Rowling was born on 31 July 1965 in England. She grew up surrounded by books and had an ambition of being a writer at a young age.
