You go inside and stay there for a while, wandering back and forth and settling where you like and discovering how the room and corridors relate to each other, how the world outside is altered by being viewed from these windows.”) In this talk, we’ll borrow from a larger palette of metaphors to come up with more surprising—and possibly more helpful—ways of envisioning story structure. One session | Friday, February 5 | 1:10–4:10 pm General: $150 | Member: $135 POETRY HIGHLIGHTS JERICHO BROWN WRITING THE DUPLEX In this 90-minute class, Jericho Brown will lead students through an exercise for writing a duplex poem—a form he invented that blends the ghazal, the sonnet, and the blues. Each student should bring 14 disparate lines of 9–11 syllables to class. Lines may be from sentences of the student’s own prose or lines from poems that haven’t worked. No two lines have to be from the same source or time. Each student should come to workshop with each line on its own small sliver of paper. Students will leave class with a new process and a new poem. One session | Sunday, March 7 | 1–2:30 pm General: $90 | Member: $81 MIXED GENRE GERALDINE WOODS WRITING GREAT SENTENCES We’ll examine sentences from an array of authors and genres, analyzing how form and content align. We’ll look at structure (e.g. a “pocket” that hides or safeguards and a “u-turn” that surprises or subverts), diction (coinage, descriptions, word shifts), sound (matched sounds, onomatopoeia, repetition), and what obeying—or breaking!—grammar rules adds to a sentence. Experiment with these techniques by writing new sentences or revisising old ones, then share the results with the class. Deaf Republic is a new story-in-poems by the Ukrainian-American poet Ilya Kaminsky. Born in Odessa in 1977 – then part of the Soviet Union – Kaminsky lost most of his hearing at the age of four. His family sought political asylum in the United States in the 1990s, when he was 16. Our dramatisation of Deaf Republic begins tomorrow and stars Fiona Shaw, Arinzé Kene, Christopher Ecclestone and Noma Dumezweni. And the last person to introduce himself was a beautiful young man, very tall and he stood up to introduce himself. Everyone else was seated and he said “My name is Ilya Kaminsky, I am from Odessa, former Soviet Union. I write poetry for God,” and sat down.

    BAM and the National Book Foundation present Eat, Drink & Be Literary, March 10—June 9 The 16th season of intimate evenings with renowned authors features Ilya Kaminsky, Luis Alberto Urrea, Sigrid Nunez, and Tayari Jones Bloomberg Philanthropies is the Season Sponsor Jan 31, 2020/Brooklyn, NY—BAM’s popular Eat, Drink & Be Literary series, presented in partnership with the National Book Foundation, will host four acclaimed writers from March 10 through June 9. The distinguished group includes Ilya Kaminsky, Luis Alberto Urrea, Sigrid Nunez, and Tayari Jones. The authors will read from their work and share creative processes, inspirations, and anecdotes with the audience over dinner at BAMcafé. These evenings offer literary devotees—writers and readers alike—the opportunity to socialize in an informal setting that also encourages in-depth discussion and moments of discovery. Doors open at 6pm and dinner begins at 6:30pm. The meal—featuring a seasonal menu from Great Performances—includes dessert, wine, and live music. The evening continues with a reading by the author, a moderated discussion, a Q&A with the audience, and a book signing. The Greenlight Bookstore at BAM kiosk provides books for purchase. Tickets for Eat, Drink & Be Literary are $70, which includes admission to the reading, dinner, dessert, and wine. All Poetry at Bennington readings begin at 7:00 pm and are free, open to the public, and will take place in Tishman Lecture Hall on the College’s campus. Three of this year’s visiting poets have been longlisted for the National Book Awards in Poetry, including Jericho Brown (The Tradition, Copper Canyon Press) and Ariana Reines (A Sand Book, Tin House Books) who will visit this fall, and Ilya Kaminsky (Deaf Republic, Graywolf Press) who will visit in spring 2020. “We're so excited about the aesthetically and culturally inclusive range of visiting poets coming to Bennington this year from across the country—Georgia and Minnesota and Colorado and Utah, as well as New York and Boston. These are some of the most vital and electrifying voices in American poetry today,” said Poetry at Bennington Director Michael Dumanis. On Wednesday, October 2, Chelsey Minnis will read from her poetry.
