The theater has wheelchair accessible seating available in the rear on the main floor. There is no wheelchair accessible seating in the balcony. PARKING There is handicapped parking very close to The Mendelssohn Theatre on Fletcher Street and in the parking structure behind the Power Center on Palmer Drive. The first three levels of the Palmer VENUE ADDRESS Drive structure have 5 parking spots on each level to each elevator. UMS EDUCATION ARTISTIC STATEMENT Tanya Tagaq brings ancient and modern together with striking, provocative music. Tagaq has adapted Inuit throat singing, traditionally performed by two women, into a solo art form, mixing it with rock, electronica, and metal to create an unapologetically unique sound. Her music directly addresses issues facing indigenous communities by advocating for cultural preservation and bringing awareness to human rights violations. Tagaq’s latest album Animism wordlessly laments the lack of connection between humans and nature in modern life. In its final track, “Fracking,” Tagaq personifies the pain of the earth in the wake of environmental destruction. At the same time, she defies classification, reaching across politics, genres, and content: “I love my culture so much but I don’t like having the responsibility of representing it because what I’m doing is so opposite the tradition. I wish people would just focus on the sound of it instead of picturing igloos or whatever.” We hope Tanya Tagaq’s School Day Performance will challenge students to immerse themselves in new soundscapes, explore Inuit culture, and learn more about the historical and current problems impacting indigenous peoples around the world. Inuit throat singing originated as a way for women to entertain themselves and engage in friendly competition while men were away hunting. Two women face one another closely and improvise musical patterns; the first one to laugh or run out of breath loses.     Spring 2020 Spring 2020 About Us About Us nhabit Media Inc. is the first Inuit-owned, independent publishing Icompany in the Canadian Arctic. We aim to promote and preserve the stories, knowledge, and talent of the Arctic, while also supporting research in Inuit mythology and the traditional Inuit knowledge of Nunavummiut (residents of Nunavut, Canada’s northernmost territory). Our authors, storytellers, and artists bring traditional knowledge to life in a way that is accessible to readers both familiar and unfamiliar with Inuit culture and traditions. Incorporated in 2006, Inhabit Media was born out of a need for Nunavut kids to see their culture accurately represented in the books they read in schools. We have spent the last ten years working with elders and storytellers from across the Canadian Arctic to ensure that the region’s unique Inuit oral history is recorded and not lost to future generations. Many of the stories that we publish have never been written down before, having existed for centuries as tales passed orally from generation to generation. While many of these stories are ancient, we work closely with elders, contemporary Inuit writers, and illustrators the world over to present folktales and traditional stories in a format that will resonate with modern audiences across North America. Our books do not simply provide a glimpse into Inuit culture; they also represent the preservation of oral history and traditional knowledge that may otherwise have been lost, in a format that contemporary readers will find engaging, entertaining, and informative.     “Don’t Call Me Eskimo”1: Representation, Mythology, and Hip Hop Culture on Baffin Island CHARITY MARSH Abstract: Through a contextualization of the song, “Don’t Call Me Eskimo,” which was launched on the interactive websiteYouTube in 2007 and an analysis of three examples of hip hop culture drawn from her ethnographic fieldwork on Baffin Island in June/July 2008, the author makes the argument that hip hop culture in Nunavut enables a re-working of contemporary Inuit identity. As part of this re-working, Inuit youth mediate representations of themselves and their current lived experiences through mobile technologies and local networks, challenging common stereotypes and reified identities that continue to circulate in political, cultural, and national discourses. You Can’t Stop the Hip Hop!2 “You can’t stop the hip hop!” is a statement of significance and provocation – a declaration that has been professed to me (a hip hop scholar, researcher, fa- cilitator, and enthusiast) by young people living both in the northern regions of Canada on Baffin Island and those living in southwestern Canada in the prairie provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta. To understand the complex meaning(s) of this statement, one needs to consider the continually evolving mythology associated with hip hop culture along with the multiple and varied manifestations of the arts practices which continue to signify hip hop culture both in local and global contexts. As an entry point into a discus- sion of hip hop culture in Canada, I draw on this statement--“You can’t stop the hip hop!”--as a way to respond to the general reactions of many people whom I converse with about the existence and significance of hip hop cul- ture among First Nations, Métis, and Inuit youth living within the borders of 111 MUSICultures 36 Canada, and more specifically in the western and northern regions where my research is concentrated.

    Taqqut Productions Inc. is an Inuit-owned film production company located in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Taqqut is committed to bringing the stories of the North to the world, and aims to establish itself as an innovative leader of youth and children’s programming. The company’s short films have screened at festivals in eighteen countries and have won over twenty international awards. This past year, Taqqut Productions completed production on the television series, Anaana’s Tent, which began airing on APTN in Inuktitut and English in May 2018, and season 2 of the series will begin airing this fall. In addition to the compelling television properties underway, Taqqut is also in development of two animated features, The Hidden World (2D animation) and Beyond the Inuksuk (stop-motion). Taqqut has production experience with live action, stop motion animation, 2D animation, and puppets. Working with the Inhabit Media educational team (an award-winning Inuit publishing company), Taqqut has a wealth of stories of Northern folklore to share with the world. Ryan Kwey, tansi, she:kon, tunngasugitsi, bonjour, and welcome to the 15th Annual New Sun Conference on Aboriginal Arts: Above the Noise. As in the past, we acknowledge with gratitude the hospitality of the Algonquin people on whose traditional unceded territory we gather today. Fifteen years ago this weekend, on February 28, 2002, we held the First New Sun Conference on Aboriginal Arts at Carleton. In truth, it was called a symposium for the first two years but then changed to conference, even though it soon became apparent that “conference” did not fully reflect the kind of energizing and inspiring event the New Sun Conference was quickly becoming. The theme of the inaugural conference was “Healing through the Arts”, and the presenters that year were Onondaga photographer/curator, Jeffrey Thomas; Ojibway comedian Don Kelly; Ojibway author and playwright, Drew Hayden Taylor; Inuit videographer and FASD educator, Evie Mark, with Cree writer and collaborator, Roberta Stout; Director of the White Mountain Academy of the Arts in Elliot Lake, Dr. Robert Kavanagh; and Academy co-founder, Earl Commanda, Chief of the Serpent River First Nation. The opening invocation and words of welcome were given by Carleton Journalism professor, and member of the Haida Nation, Cle-alls (John Medicine Horse Kelly). Midway through, we shared a light luncheon of Native foods while enjoying the flute music of Mohawk elder Rohahes, accompanied by Peigan drummer and dancer, Paula du Hamel.
