ISSN (Online) - 2349-8846 COVID-19: Examining the Impact of Lockdown in India after One Year EPW ENGAGE One year after its announcement in March 2020, the consequences of India’s strict COVID-19 lockdown measures and ineffective policy responses continue to be felt, be it in terms of livelihood loss and economic downturn or increased marginalisation of vulnerable sections of society. On 24 March 2020, with approximately 500 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 reported in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the country and declared a nationwide lockdown. He announced that “a total ban is being imposed on people, from stepping out of their homes for a period of 21 days.” The lockdown, which would be in operation from the midnight of 24–25 March, was announced with only four hours’ notice. On the same day, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs notified stringent lockdown measures, including the suspension of transport services and closing of government offices, commercial and industrial establishments. Exceptions were made for activities such as police and emergency services, essential services such as electricity, water and sanitation, postal services, banking and insurance services, manufacture of essential commodities, sale and transport of essential goods like food, telecommunications and internet services, and print and electronic media. Hospitality services were suspended, excepting those accommodating persons stranded due to lockdown, and those earmarked for quarantine facilities. All educational institutions were to be shut down. All social, political, sports, entertainment, academic, cultural, religious functions and gatherings were barred, and places of worship were to be closed to the public. Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies Abstract The presence of colloquial and informal language is rather neglected in today’s EFL classrooms. The following study aims to demonstrate that this vocabulary, part of a genuine, real-world English, can be incorporated into the lesson in a unique way; by using authentic audio-visual materials like television sitcoms. For this dissertation, several fields have been explored in depth, such as the value of those genuine products as a teaching tool, that goes hand in hand with students’ motivation, the relevance of the cultural competence and further aspects like the purpose of working with informal and colloquial word-forms, the irrefutable role of captions and an analysis of the incidental vocabulary acquisition phenomenon in the language learning experience. Moreover, this MA dissertation includes an empirical study conducted with 4th of ESO students which aimed at analysing whether using the Northern Irish TV show Derry Girls is a beneficial tool to gain new vocabulary like idioms and phrasal verbs. The results obtained indicate that students were more motivated when learning English this way; moreover, it in fact helped most of them learn new vocabulary. However, in the world of the consumer, it has a particular role to play. Tim O’Reilly, who coined the term “open source,” put Online TV is now the second it this way: most popular source of “What technology does is create new opportunities to do a job that customers want done.”1 Home entertainment is most certainly a job that people “want done.” Ninety years ago, broadcast television television content in the UK, technology was the new opportunity to deliver it in an entirely new way.2 Based on the data from our most recent survey in Europe, the internet has become the next new opportunity to provide television entertainment to the home. Germany, and Sweden. Today, there are three primary sources of TV entertainment available to consumers: free-to-air (FTA), pay TV, and online TV. Free-to-air TV channels are typically received via an antenna but can also arrive over satellite and cable. Examples include BBC1, SVT1, and Das Erste. Pay TV services distribute linear TV over cable, satellite, and telco TV systems. Examples include Virgin Media, Sky Deutschland, and Com Hem. Online TV allows viewers to stream or download shows and movies over mobile and broadband data networks. Examples of services include Netflix, Now TV, and Amazon Prime Video. Just twelve years after Netflix first introduced streaming services, online TV has become the second most popular TV source in the UK, Germany, and Sweden. -

Even so, Dave Behrman was particularly unlucky in this area. Not only was his promising career cut short by physical problems, but Behrman’s quality of life also suffered well past the time that the game was just a memory for him. David Wesley Behrman was born on November 9, 1941, in Dowagiac, Michigan. That’s a small town in the southwest corner of the state, located about 25 miles north of South Bend, Indiana, and 25 miles southeast of Benton Harbor, Michigan. Dowagiac’s biggest celebrity (literally and figuratively) might be Chris Taylor, the 412-pound wrestler who won a bronze medal for the United States at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Dave’s father was Chauncey Orville Behrman, who was born in Volinia – just east of Dowagiac. Mother Freda was born in Sturgis – about an hour southeast of Volinia near the Indiana state line. Dave was an only child. Behrman stayed in Dowagiac through his childhood, and attended Dowagiac Union High School. That facility had only one other pro football player among its alumni. Vern Davis played three games at cornerback for the 1971 Philadelphia Eagles. Information about Dave’s time with the Chieftains is tough to find. While helping assuage student and parent demands, and ensuring continuity of entry to universities, training, or employment, this potentially misrepresents actual skills, as these qualifications represent a certain level of competence. Without these skills, economies won’t have enough skilled workers and individuals may find their career mobility hampered. Exploring the responses of TVET institutions to changed evaluation criteria and identifying their assessment of competency shortfalls and impact on progression into employment, can help empower educators, governments, students, and businesses. Challenge Given the disruptive impact of COVID-19 and the extended use of technological innovations to complement or replace in-person education, some educational and training organizations are awarding qualifications to those progressing through their education that reflect a normal distribution profile of passes and grades. This is despite lost learning time, teacher shortages, increased anxiety, connectivity challenges, incomplete assessments, and other disruptions. Examination Boards are under pressure to assuage student and parent demands, and to support continuity of entry to universities, vocational training, or employment. While this might be considered to be ‘fair’ for this cohort of students, it represents a misunderstanding of the societal and economic value of qualifications at tertiary level. -

Minding our minds during the COVID-19 These can be difficult times for all of us as we hear about spread of COVID-19 from all over the world, through television, social media, newspapers, family and friends and other sources. The most common emotion faced by all is Fear. It makes us anxious, panicky and can even possibly make us think, say or do things that we might not consider appropriate under normal circumstances. Understanding the importance of Lockdown Lockdown is meant to prevent the spread of infection from one person to another, to protect ourselves and others. This means, not stepping out of the house except for buying necessities, reducing the number of trips outside, and ideally only a single, healthy family member making the trips when absolutely necessary. If there is anyone in the house who is very sick and may need to get medical help, you must be aware of the health facility nearest to you. Handling Social isolation Staying at home can be quite nice for some time, but can also be boring and restricting. Here are some ways to keep positive and cheerful. 1. Be busy. Have a regular schedule. Help in doing some of the work at home. 2. Distract yourself from negative emotions by listening to music, reading, watching an entertaining programme on television. If you had old hobbies like painting, gardening or stitching, go back to them. Rediscover your hobbies. 3. Eat well and drink plenty of fluids. 4. Be physically active. Do simple indoor exercises that will keep you fit and feeling fit. -

humanities Article Rewriting Universes: Post-Brexit Futures in Dave Hutchinson’s Fractured Europe Quartet Hadas Elber-Aviram Department of English, The University of Notre Dame (USA) in England, London SW1Y 4HG, UK; [email protected] Abstract: Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a new strand of British fiction that grapples with the causes and consequences of the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union. Building on Kristian Shaw’s pioneering work in this new literary field, this article shifts the focus from literary fiction to science fiction. It analyzes Dave Hutchinson’s Fractured Europe quartet— comprised of Europe in Autumn (pub. 2014), Europe at Midnight (pub. 2015), Europe in Winter (pub. 2016) and Europe at Dawn (pub. 2018)—as a case study in British science fiction’s response to the recent nationalistic turn in the UK. This article draws on a bespoke interview with Hutchinson and frames its discussion within a range of theories and studies, especially the European hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer. It argues that the Fractured Europe quartet deploys science fiction topoi to interrogate and criticize the recent rise of English nationalism. It further contends that the Fractured Europe books respond to this nationalistic turn by setting forth an estranged vision of Europe and offering alternative modalities of European identity through the mediation of photography and the redemptive possibilities of cooking. Created and written by Lisa McGee, Derry Girls candidly follows the lives of five teenagers as they navigate life in Derry during The Troubles. Series one of Derry Girls was the most watched series in Northern Ireland since modern records began in 2002 and won both Best Comedy and Best Writer at the 2018 IFTA Gala Television Awards as well as the 2018 Radio Times Comedy Champion award. Across the UK, consolidated viewing figures revealed that the first series was watched by an average on 2.5 million viewers making it Channel 4’s biggest comedy launch since 2004. Police powers in the COVID-19 context This guidance note has been written by Ashley Chrystall, Wellington Community Justice Project, and covers information relating to making reports during the COVID-19 lockdown, police powers to enter your home and to stop you while you are outside or on the road, as well as powers of arrest. Making reports How do I report lockdown breaches? To report an individual or business breaching any of the current alert level restrictions, you can fill out the form on the Police website. If you have concerns regarding people who are not self-isolating when they should be, you can email the dedicated Ministry of Health email address. What can the police do if I report breaches during the COVID-19 lockdown? The police will educate anyone breaking lockdown rules and can enforce these rules if necessary (discussed below). Police will be patrolling streets with a focus on maintaining law and order and preventing harm. They will deal appropriately with anyone attempting to exploit the restrictions in place. During the lockdown, police have special powers available under various pieces of legislation, including the Health Act 1956, the Summary Offences Act 1981, and the Civil Defence Emergency Act 2002. Breach consequences include warnings through to prosecutions if necessary. If I see someone breaking the COVID-19 lockdown rules, should I handle it myself? If it is safe to do so, police advise having a polite conversation with the individual/s breaching lockdown restrictions, at a two metre distance, in the first instance. The best way to handle a breach of the COVID-19 lockdown is to contact the authorities and inform them of any breaches.
