"She was famous during her life almost as much for her ethereal beauty and personality as for her melodious, sensuous poetry." <b>Family and Childhood</b> Elinor Wylie was born Elinor Morton Hoyt in Somerville, New Jersey, into a socially prominent family. Her grandfather, Henry M. Hoyt, was a governor of Pennsylvania. Her aunt was Helen Hoyt, a minor poet. Her parents were Henry Martyn Hoyt, Jr., who would be United States Solicitor General from 1903 to 1909; and Anne Morton McMichael (born July 31, 1861 in Pa.). Their other children were: Henry Martyn Hoyt (May 8, 1887 in Pa. – 1920 in New York City) who married Alice Gordon Parker (1885–1951) Constance A. Hoyt (May 20, 1889 in Pa. – 1923 in Bavaria, Germany) who married Ferdinand von Stumm-Halberg on March 30, 1910 in Washington, D.C. Morton McMichael Hoyt (born April 4, 1899 in Washington, D.C.), three times married and divorced Eugenia Bankhead, known as "Sister" and sister of Tallulah Bankhead Nancy McMichael Hoyt (born October 1, 1902 in Washington, D.C) romance novelist who wrote Elinor Wylie: The Portrait of an Unknown Woman (1935). She married Edward Davison Curtis; they divorced in 1932. Elinor was educated at Miss Baldwin's School (1893–97), Mrs. Flint's School (1897–1901), and finally Holton-Arms School (1901–04). -

Tony Roberts Living with Browning: an appreciation of the poet in his bicentennial year I sometimes feel that Robert Browning and I were related, distant cousins perhaps. It stems from the ghostly intimacy of having read nine biographies of the man. His poetry and the books that feed on it have taken up five feet of my bookshelves for many years. Of course I frequently reread the poems, too, and quote Randall Jarrell in my defence. Celebrating Wallace Stevens’ work, in Poetry and the Age , Jarrell concluded: A good poet is someone who manages, in a lifetime of standing out in thunderstorms, to be struck by lightning five or six times; a dozen or two dozen times and he is great. By that measure Robert Browning is a great poet. On my count there are a dozen or more lightning strikes among the thicket of collections written by this most relentless of Victorians i. What I have loved of Browning is the plain speaking, “hip to haunch”, intimacy of the dramas. We are there with the watch seizing “brother Lippo”; at dinner with the worldly prelate, Bishop Blougram; gathered with the sons at the deathbed of the bishop of Saint Praxed’s; attending on the dry, sadistic duke at Ferrara; eavesdropping on the cuckolded “faultless painter”. Here and elsewhere, Browning exhibits his genius for character and atmosphere – and for fine detail (“the ferrel of his stick/Trying the mortar’s temper ‘tween the chinks”), the perfect image ii , sensuality (upper iii and lower caste iv ), the memorable aphorism (“incentives come from the soul's self;/ The rest avail not.”) adroit rhythms and rhymes and – in lighter moments – a sometimes knockabout sense of humour v. -

In some sequestered spot, he would direct their education and observe the "impress ions of the world . upon the mind when it has been ve iled from human prejudice." 1 It was Elinor Wylie (1885-1 928), accl aimed writer and an authori ty on Shelley's life and writings, who conducted the poet's unusual social experiment in a short story published in the September 1927 issue of Harper 's Bazaar.2 The "seques tered spot" she chose fo r the poet and his pupils? Bar Island in the mouth of Somes H arbor. Wylie's fa nciful tale, titled ''A Birthday Cake for Lionel," opens this way: "It was the fo urth of August in the year 1832, and upon the ro und piney islet whi ch li es at the head of Somes' So und two little girls were engaged in icing a birthday cake."3 Artemis and Jezebel are making the cake fo r fo rty-year-old Li onel Anon, aka Percy Bysshe Shelley, who is away that day "fi shing the deep waters pas t Little C ranberry"-a long row even for the most hale of Romantic poets. -

Appendix B: A Literary Heritage I. Suggested Authors, Illustrators, and Works from the Ancient World to the Late Twentieth Century All American students should acquire knowledge of a range of literary works reflecting a common literary heritage that goes back thousands of years to the ancient world. In addition, all students should become familiar with some of the outstanding works in the rich body of literature that is their particular heritage in the English- speaking world, which includes the first literature in the world created just for children, whose authors viewed childhood as a special period in life. The suggestions below constitute a core list of those authors, illustrators, or works that comprise the literary and intellectual capital drawn on by those in this country or elsewhere who write in English, whether for novels, poems, nonfiction, newspapers, or public speeches. The next section of this document contains a second list of suggested contemporary authors and illustrators—including the many excellent writers and illustrators of children’s books of recent years—and highlights authors and works from around the world. In planning a curriculum, it is important to balance depth with breadth. As teachers in schools and districts work with this curriculum Framework to develop literature units, they will often combine literary and informational works from the two lists into thematic units. Exemplary curriculum is always evolving—we urge districts to take initiative to create programs meeting the needs of their students. The lists of suggested authors, illustrators, and works are organized by grade clusters: pre-K–2, 3–4, 5–8, and 9– 12. -

York University Graduate Program in English Post-1900 US Literature Comprehensive Reading List [Updated MarCh 2007] Candidates should submit a reading list composed of the following texts. Where indicated, students may substitute another appropriate text by the same author. Additionally, up to 10% of each section of this list may be replaced with alternatives decided upon by the candidate in consultation with the examination supervisor. Note well: In addition to mastering the list provided below, candidates in twentieth-century American literature are expected to develop a familiarity with a range of major American literary texts from before the 20th century. Ideally, candidates planning to specialize as Americanists will sit the pre-1900 American Literature exam and the twentieth-century American Literature exam. Candidates who opt not to take the earlier American exam should refer to that exam’s reading list in consultation with their supervisor to determine which American authors/texts from before 1900 are unavoidable prerequisites for this field exam. Likely possibilities include: Mark Twain, Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, etc. Candidates will not be examined on these materials as part of this field, but exam questions may take for granted knowledge of such fundamental texts. If this will be a second field exam, students are required to submit a copy of their first field examination reading list along with the final copy of the 20th century American list. Prose Candidates should read texts by approximately 10-15 authors from each time period below, selected in consultation with their supervisors. A total of approximately 45-55 prose texts by as many authors is appropriate.
