Information on Traveling To California Task Force on Family Caregiving Inaugural Meeting at the University of Southern California, October 20th, 2016 Travel Information Contents: Directions to USC from LAX Getting to USC by Train Driving to USC Morning Location: University Club, 705 West 34th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90089 Afternoon Location: Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, 3715 McClintock Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90089 Directions to USC from LAX Options: Renting a car and driving (see Driving to USC section, below) Uber or Lyft – phone applications available in the Google Play Store/Apple AppStore Taxi service – available from LAX: o LA Taxi 24/7 – (310) 598-0665 o LA Taxi Service – (323) 868 - 3802 Shared-ride vans: o Prime Time Shuttle – http://www.primetimeshuttle.com o Super Shuttle – http://www.supershuttle.com/locations/losangeleslax Bus to Union Station: FlyAway (see below) FlyAway instructions – $8 fare upon exiting the bus 1. Get on the FlyAway. There are bus stops at all airport terminals a. Exit any terminal at the arrival (lower) level and locate a green sign “FlyAway, Buses, and Long- Distance Vans” above the island curb b. The walk from any gate to a stop takes about 10 minutes c. The buses are large blue coaches marked “FlyAway” d. Buses run every 30 minutes e. More information: http://www.lawa.org/FlyAway/content.aspx?id=10152 2. Several other FlyAway routes also serve the same stop, so check the destination signs on the arriving bus to make sure you are taking the correct route (Union Station) 3. Travel to Union Station and get off the bus (45 min – 1 hr) 4. Once at Union Station, pay your fare at the kiosk next to the bus stop (debit or credit cards only), then follow the descending pathway in the middle of the bus island. This ramp connects to a wide underpass leading into the station. (2 min) 5. For directions from Union Station to USC, please see the Union Station section, below Getting to USC by Train Traveling by train, from San Diego to Los Angeles: 1. Take the Pacific Surfliner 777 towards San Louis Obispo Amtrak, the Pacific Surfliner 579 towards Los Angeles Union Station Amtrak, or the Pacific Surfliner 583 towards Los Angeles Union Station Amtrak 2. Get off at Union Station 3. Follow directions from Union Station to USC (listed below) From Union Station: 1. Go to the Patsaouras Transit Plaza, at the back (east side) of Union Station 2. Find berth/station #4 3. Take the USC free shuttle, heading toward the University Park Campus (UPC) 4. Shuttles depart roughly every 15 minutes in the morning 5. Shuttle schedule: http://transnet.usc.edu/index.php/bus-map-schedules/#tab-7 6. At USC, the second shuttle drop-off location is the JEP House (801 West 34th Street), which is about 200 feet from the University Club Driving to USC If you are driving to USC, the closest parking to our morning meeting location is in Parking Structure D, which is about 500 feet from the University Club. Coninue under the freeway bridge and across Flower Street 4. Turn right on Figueroa Street 5. Turn left onto W. Jefferson Blvd. 6. Turn left onto Royal St., into Entrance 4 7. Stop at gate attendant for parking information From the 110 (Harbor/Pasadena) Freeway (southbound): 1. Take the Exposition Boulevard exit 2. Go straight through the light (veers slightly right) 3. Turn right on Figueroa Street at the second stop light 4. Turn left onto W. Jefferson Blvd. 5. Turn left onto Royal St., into Entrance 4 6. Stop at gate attendant for parking information From the I-10 (Santa Monica) Freeway (eastbound): 1. Take the Hoover Street exit 2. At the end of the off-ramp, turn right at the light (onto Hoover Street) 3. Continue until Hoover Street ends at Jefferson Boulevard 4. Turn left onto Jefferson 5. Turn right on Royal St., into Entrance 4 6. Stop at gate attendant for parking information From the I-10 (Santa Monica) Freeway (westbound): 1. Take the Vermont Avenue exit 2. At the end of the off-ramp, turn left at the light (onto Vermont Avenue) 3. After 0.8 miles, turn left at the stop light onto Jefferson Boulevard 4. Turn right at the third light on Royal Street, into Entrance 4 5. Stop at gate attendant for parking information From the 405 (San Diego) Freeway (north- or southbound): 1. Transition to the I-10 (Santa Monica) Freeway east, heading toward Los Angeles 2. Take the Exposition Boulevard exit 3. Go straight through the light (veers slightly right) 4.     Union Station Fact Sheet HISTORY Commissioned: 1933 as a joint venture of the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroads. Opened: May 1939 with a star-studded three-day celebration. Construction Cost: Reported to have cost $11 million to build. Station Ranking: The largest train terminal in the Western United States. Designed By: Father and son team Donald & John Parkinson (known for their work on Bullocks Wilshire and Los Angeles City Hall). Architectural Style: “Mission Moderne”, a blend of Spanish-colonial, Revival and Streamline Moderne (Art Deco). Landscape Architect: Tommy Tomson (known for his work on the infield of Santa Anita Park and Park La Brea). Transportation: At opening the station serviced 33 trains with an estimated 7000 passengers per day. Place in History: Designated as a Los Angeles Historic–Cultural Monument in 1972 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. UNION STATION TODAY Union Station is a bustling 52-acre transportation center in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles serving 100,000 commuters daily. Transportation: With 14 tracks servicing 440 trains (light and heavy rail), the station is the primary regional hub for Amtrak and Metrolink’s five-county commuter train service and serves as a transfer point for Metro’s Red, Purple and Gold Lines. Linked to the Patsaouras Transit Plaza, Union Station offers essential transit connections to destinations throughout Los Angeles via approximately 1,500 busses per day (Metro Commuter, Mega, Fly Away, Greyhound). Parking: 3,000 parking spaces located at Metro Headquarters. Metro Acquisition: In April 2011, Metro completed the acquisition of the Los Angeles Union Station property, including 38 acres and 5.9 million square feet of development rights.
