COCAINE AND OTHER STIMULANT USE IN SC Supplemental County-Level Data Report

1

SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT OVERVIEW

The purpose of this supplemental report is to provide an overview of the burden that the use of stimulants (i.e., and other stimulants such as ) has across South Carolina. The report includes statewide substance use burden maps (Section I) and service-utilization data for each county and abuse authority specifically involving cocaine and use (Section II). The data will help provide context regarding stimulant use across the state and help identify areas of focus for counties and county authorities.

The burden maps included in this supplemental report reflect the effect that cocaine use and other stimulant use have across the states. The rankings are arranged from lowest burden (ranking of 1) to highest burden (ranking of 46) of substance use in that county.

The indicators used for the burden maps include: • Substance-involved overdose death rate1 • Substance-related abuse/dependence hospitalization rate (primary/secondary diagnosis)2 • episodic discharges (primary/secondary diagnosis)3

The charts for each county authority (Section II) provide data on the number of primary/secondary- diagnosis discharged episodes4 (y-axis of the chart) that each authority had related to cocaine and amphetamine use from 2016 to 2019 (x-axis of the chart). The data help to show the direction of the trends regarding service utilization by patients for these specific substances at each county authority. At the end of the report, full tables of the chart data are provided for each substance by county authority and year.
