The Labour Party is more than the shadow cabinet, and Corbyn must learn to engage with it blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpolicy/the-labour-party-is-more-than-the-shadow-cabinet/ 1/11/2016 The three-day reshuffle of the shadow cabinet might have helped Jeremy Corbyn stamp his mark on the party but he needs to do more to ensure his leadership lasts, writes Eunice Goes. She explains the Labour leader must engage with all groups that have historically made up the party, while his rhetoric should focus more on policies that resonate with the public. Doing so will require a stronger vision of what he means by ‘new politics’ and, crucially, a better communications strategy. By Westminster standards Labour’s shadow cabinet reshuffle was ‘shambolic’ and had the key ingredients of a ‘pantomime’. At least, it was in those terms that it was described by a large number of Labour politicians and Westminster watchers. It certainly wasn’t slick, or edifying. Taking the best of a week to complete a modest shadow cabinet reshuffle was revealing of the limited authority the leader Jeremy Corbyn has over the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP). Against the wishes of the Labour leader, the Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn and the Shadow Chief Whip Rosie Winterton kept their posts. However, Corbyn was able to assert his authority in other ways. He moved the pro-Trident Maria Eagle from Defence and appointed the anti-Trident Emily Thornberry to the post. He also imposed some ground rules on Hillary Benn and got rid of Michael Dugher and Pat McFadden on the grounds of disloyalty. -

At the '"time, in common with most members of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, we were both only vaguely aware of the existence of that body. In response, I started to research material in order to write a short article about them. It became apparent very rapidly that there was no central body of information about the <then) Special Constabulary and, perhaps worse for a writer, that at least some of the details were covered by the Official Secrets Act. The Kinistry of Defence appeared unable to acknowledge, let alone answer, any letters of enqUiry. The length of time being taken to compile information was rapidly becoming uneconomic in terms of any possible return from writing a short report. (Which is probably why there were no such articles from which to draw in the first place.) However, I had sent out several other 'feelers', and accounts of the XDP's presence and activities were trickling in. -

The Disposal Services Agency (DSA) is the sole authority for the disposal process of all surplus defence equipment, with the exception of nuclear, land and buildings. The Agency targets potential markets particularly in developing countries in a pro-active manner; to enable them to procure formally used British defence equipment instead of equipment from other countries. The principal activity of the Agency is the provision of disposal and sales services to MoD and other parts of the public sector. These services include Government-to-Government Sales, Asset Realisation, Inventory Disposals, Site Clearances, Repayment Sales, Waste Management and Consultancy and Valuation Services. DSA’s Aim: To secure the best nancial return from the sale of surplus equipment and stores; to minimise the cost of sales and to operate as an intelligent contracting organisation with various agreements with British Industry and Commerce. DSA’s Mission: To provide Defence and other users with an agreed, effective and ef cient disposals and sales service in order to support UK Defence capability. HENRY SMITH MP HOUSE OF COMMONS LONDON SW1A 0AA Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP Chancellor of the Exchequer HM Treasury 1 Horse Guards Road London SW1A 2HQ 13th July 2021 Dear Chancellor We are writing to you as a group of cross-party MPs and Peers to urge you to extend the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme for workers in the aviation, travel and tourism industries until March 2022 in order to prevent significant job losses when the scheme is due to close in September. As you will know, our aviation, travel and tourism sectors were the first to be impacted as a consequence of COVID-19, with passenger numbers collapsing from March 2020 and with recovery likely to take a number of years, these will also be one of the last sectors to recover. The consequences on our aviation, travel and tourism sectors have been devastating, with businesses seeing little or no revenue for over fifteen months, significant job losses and the risk of business failure remaining a real risk. However, with the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme due to close in September, we run the very real risk of a major jobs crisis in the industry. The latest ONS statistics show that 57% of employees in passenger air transport and 51% of those employed by travel agency and tour operators remain on furlough. With a lost summer season coming on top of the worst fifteen months in the history of UK aviation, without the continuing support of the CJRS the risk of significant redundancies will become a stark and devastating reality. -

BRIEFING PAPER Number 08993, 30 June 2020 Service Police review By Louisa Brooke-Holland Summary The Army, RAF and Royal Navy each have their own police services. They are collectively known as the Service Police. The Ministry of Defence published a review of the Service Police and the Service Justice System in early 2020. The review will inform the next Armed Forces Bill, which must be passed by Parliament in 2021. The review supported retaining three separate Service Police organisations but recommended the creation of a tri-service defence serious crime unit. The review also recommended Service Police should no longer be responsible for investigating the most serious offences (murder, rape and manslaughter) in the UK. This briefing paper explains who the Service Police are, what they do, and the outcome of the review. The Library will publish a paper on the Service Justice System Review at a later date. 1. The Service Police The Service Justice System provides a legal framework that ensures Service personnel are subject to a single disciplinary code that applies wherever they are serving. The disciplinary systems of the three services – the Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force (RAF) – were drawn together under a common system by the Armed Forces Act 2006. While the Service Justice System mirrors the criminal law in England and Wales as closely as possible it also provides an avenue to enforce standards that are distinctive to the Armed Forces. Each of the three services has its own police force: The Royal Military Police (RMP) in the Army, the Royal Air Force Police (RAFP) and the Royal Navy Police (RNP). -
