Current Details from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center COORDINATES: 19.8° north, 87.6° east LOCATION: 390 kilometers (245 miles) south-southwest of Kolkata, India MOVEMENT: north-northeast at 17 kph (10 mph) WINDS: 175 kph (110 mph) with gusts to 210 kph (130 mph) RADIUS OF TROPICAL STORM-FORCE WINDS: 370 kilometers (230 miles) RADIUS OF HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS: 85 kilometers (50 miles) SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE RANKING*: Category 2 FORECAST LANDFALL LOCATION: south of Kolkata, India FORECAST LANDFALL TIMEFRAME: Wednesday afternoon or evening local time Latest Satellite Picture Source: University of Wisconsin (CIMSS) Discussion Cyclone Amphan, located approximately 390 kilometers (245 miles) south-southwest of Kolkata, India, is currently tracking north-northeast at 17 kph (10 mph). Satellite imagery indicates that despite nearing landfall, the cyclone has generally maintained its overall symmetric core in the last few hours. However, the central dense overcast feature over the storm’s center has started to erode on the northeast side and the system is looking a bit more ragged. An eye feature does remain prevalent on high resolution microwave satellite scans. The JTWC has set an initial intensity at 175 kph (110 mph); 1-minute sustained average. This makes Amphan a strong Category 2-equivalent storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, and still very potent. The overall atmospheric environment is growing increasingly hostile as moderate wind shear is starting to more prominently affect the storm’s overall appearance. The system continues to track north- northeastward along the western periphery of a steering ridge of high pressure located well to the east, and this motion is likely to persist through the rest of Amphan’s life cycle. As noted, wind shear has begun to take its toll on the system and this trend is expected to continue during the next 12 hours. Some additional weakening is probable prior to landfall just south of Kolkata, India at approximately 12:00 UTC (5:30 PM local time). Rapid dissipation is anticipated as the storm comes ashore, with frictional effects of land and further wind shear erodes the storm’s core. The forecast model guidance is in excellent agreement, lending high confidence in the JTWC track.
