Jon's Mini-codiums and More

Taffeta

I'm happy to be given the opportunity to offer miniature and dwarf daffodils to interested people. This is my first sales list I joined the American Daffodil Society in 2003 and my main interest are miniatures, species, tazettas, and fall flowering daffodils. Many of the miniatures and dwarf daffodils are illustrated in this listing, the cultivars without photographs, please refer to the American Daffodil Society's Daffseek at http://daffseek.org to view photographs and additional information.

In the fall of 2014, Nancy Wilson asked me if I was interested in taking over the sale of Walter Blom's Miniatures and Dwarf Daffodils as she had wanted to retire. I accepted. Since this venture has happened so quickly, I will only be offering Division 10 cultivars that I have in my collection. Some of the Division 10 cultivars, I believe, have not been offered or not been offered in many years. In the future, I hope to offer more miniatures. I visited Nancy Wilson on Sunday, March 29 during the weekend of the 2015 Fortuna Show. We talked about daffodils and she gave me advice on what to expect on this new venture.

Any questions about this listing, please can contact me at: Jon Kawaguchi 3524 Bowman Ct. Alameda, California 94502 [email protected]

Jon's Mini-codiums and More

March 2015

A few years ago, Nancy Wilson had asked if I was interested in taking over for her. At that time, I wasn't in a position to accept this offer. This past fall, Nancy was looking for someone to take over the offerings of Walter Blom's miniature and dwarf daffodils. After a time to think about it, I accepted. Nancy got in contact with Walter Blom. Walter called me in January of 2015 to talk about daffodils and he wanted me to visit him in Albany, Oregon during February. He informed me that mid to late February was best for him as many of his cultivars and seedlings would be in bloom. After a few weeks, I did not hear from him. I was getting a little concerned but on February 19, Walter called and asked me to come on over. I told him I would have to book a flight and told me that next week would be the best. I booked a flight and called him the next day and told Walter that I would be able to meet with him on Friday February 27. Walter wanted to meet in the morning.

I arrived in Portland, Oregon Thursday night and drove to Salem which is about an hour south of Portland. Since our meeting was set for the early morning, I wanted to be closer to Walter so I didn't have to wake up too early in the morning. Salem is about 35 minutes north of Albany. Walter and Elisabeth Blom live in the country. It's not the easiest place to find but I was only a few minutes late. The Bloms are very friendly and we had a nice conversation about daffodils and about his beautiful landscape yard.

One of Walter's planter boxes

Walter showed me his growing area so we got into his golf cart and drove down a small incline. Walter grows most of his miniatures and dwarf daffodils in three planter boxes. The boxes are four feet high so he doesn't have to bend down and easy to observe the plants. He also grows a small number of his daffodils in the ground.

Walter's miniature cultivars

Walter showed me his cultivars and seedlings under number that he will be naming soon and will offer them in the future. I saw many bulbocodiums and miniatures in bloom. Some of his bulbocodium cultivars had hundreds of blooms. Some of the miniatures blooming were Bunnie Bee (1 Y-Y); and Plaisir d'Amour (6 Y-Y) introduced in 2014; Tuppenny (1 Y-Y). I thoroughly had a great time visiting the Bloms.
