The family home was an ample country residence, with wide lawns, fine old trees and high formal gate posts. This home was set in the midst of a large and prosperous farm, in a region abounding in woods and ponds, orchards and wide fields. The region was then a veritable paradise for birds; it was also an ideal environment for a child who grew up to be a most eloquent apostle of the birds and a faunal naturalist of immense achievement. The home farm had been purchased from its Jersey Dutch owners in 1863. It was successfully run and developed under the general supervision of Frank's maternal grandfather, Chester Parkhurst. He was a retired physician whose ancestors came from Chelmsford, Essex, England. Our best sources of biographic material are Chapman's de- lightful Autobiography of a Bird Lover (1933), his Camps and Cruises of an Ornithologist (1908) and his array of books, monographs and special reports upon the birds and bird faunas of North and South America. Frank's mother, Mary Augusta (Parkhurst) Chapman was an ardent lover of flowers and a "born musician." "Always," he writes, "she had a garden and at times a small conservatory, and music was as much a part of our daily life as food." Her mother, Mary (Johnson) Parkhurst was also a "born musician." As awareness about this has increased, so have responses from a number of stakeholders. In this study we present the results of the Global Survey of Re- vitalization Efforts carried out by a mixed methods approach and comparative analysis of revitalization efforts worldwide. The Survey included 30 questions, was administered online in 7 languages, and documented 245 revitalization ef- forts yielding some 40,000 bits of data. In this study, we report on frequency counts and show, among other findings, that revitalization efforts are heavily fo- cused on language teaching, perhaps over intergenerational transmission of a lan- guage, and rely heavily on community involvement although do not only involve language community members exclusively. The data also show that support for language revitalization in the way of funding, as well as endorsement, is critical to revitalization efforts. This study also makes evident the social, cultural, polit- ical, and geographic gaps in what we know about revitalization worldwide. We hope that this study will strengthen broad interest and commitment to studying, understanding, and supporting language revitalization as an integral aspect of the history of human language in the 21st century. 1. Recent research on this region that integrates ethnographic, ethnohistorical, and (to a lesser degree) archaeological information reveals a landscape that is alive and imbued with power, sustenance, and legend—a dynamic construct that reflects both changing Kumeyaay relationships with the land and the group’s continuity with the past. Sacred sites, peaks, transformed rocks, magic boulders, and other geographic features associated with oral traditions populate the landscape. Ecosystems and areas of historic significance represent direct links with generations of ancestors and are still layered with meaning in the minds of descendants. For us the mountains, the rocks, the trees: all this is something important.
