Selected Pieces by Six Taiwanese and Chinese Composers of the Twentieth Century: Ty-Zen Hsiao, Shui- Long Ma, Fan-Ling Su, Kwang-I Yin, Chen Yi and Tan Dun Ting-Yao Huang A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts University of Washington 2015 Reading Committee: Robin McCabe, Chair Thomas Harper Christina Sunardi Program Authorized to Office Degree: School of Music ©Copyright 2015 Ting-Yao Huang University of Washington Abstract Selected Pieces by Six Taiwanese and Chinese Composers of the Twentieth Century: Ty-Zen Hsiao, Shui- Long Ma, Fan-Ling Su, Kwang-I Yin, Chen Yi and Tan Dun Ting-Yao Huang Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Robin McCabe School of Music Music of the twentieth century and music by Taiwanese and Chinese composers are two areas underrepresented in classical repertoire. With the goal of increasing exposure for Taiwanese and Chinese composers and for contemporary music, this dissertation presents a collection of selected pieces by six composers of the 20th century, including Taiwanese composers Ty-Zen Hsiao (b. 1938), Shui-Long Ma (b. 1939), Fan- Ling Su (b. 1955) and Kwang-I Yin (b. 1960), as well as Chinese composers Chen Yi (b. 1953) and Tan Dun (b. 1957). These six composers were born between 1930 and 1960. Their compositional styles display many of the compositional techniques that characterize this diverse period, ranging from post-romanticism and neo-classicism to serialism and minimalism. This dissertation not only presents detailed biographical information on the six composers, but also enhances students’ understanding of the historical time period in each of these composers’ various home countries. -

Kapitel 295 ATROMBONE FORCE 11 uring its long history Stan Kenton’s band aroused strong passions both from those who loved and those who hated the band. Many felt that the band D never really swung, despite such early hits as “Eager Beaver,” “Artistry in Rhythm,” “Intermission Riff” and “The Peanut Vendor.” It is true that much of Kenton’s music was produced expressly for dancers, amounting at times to merely sophisticated mood music. And Kenton’s forays into “concert” music with the various Innovations orchestras, as well as his interpretations of the music of the romantic master Richard Wagner, not to mention the futuristic sounds concocted for the band by the singular Bob Graettinger, were far removed from the mainstream of jazz. Whatever one may think of the controversial Kenton himself and the music he championed, and where their place in the canon of jazz may ultimately be settled, one cannot deny the out- standing soloists that he employed at one time or another. From Stan Getz, Art Pepper and Shelly Manne in the ’40s to Lee Konitz and Maynard Ferguson in the ’50s and Marvin Stamm in the ’60s, and even teen-aged drummer Peter Erskine in the early ’70s, there were always some excellent sidemen in the band. The Kenton band was a great popular success in the 1940s, and it remained at least solvent (in part due to the leader’s periodic concessions to popular taste) through the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, when the band experienced a resurgence through Kenton’s far-sighted early entry into the new jazz education scene. -

The University of Southern Mississippi AN ANALYSIS OF THE CAREER AND SOLO STYLE OF JAZZ TROMBONIST CARL FONTANA by John Wesley Parker Abstract of a Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of The University of Southern Mississippi in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Musical Arts December 2010 ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF THE CAREER AND SOLO STYLE OF JAZZ TROMBONIST CARL FONTANA by John Wesley Parker December 2010 Carl Fontana’s ability and creativity as a jazz trombonist is held in high regard by his contemporaries, as well as by those who followed him. The significant aspects of his career were highlighted in a brief biography with historical and anecdotal information provided by jazz trombonists who new him and were influenced by him. Fontana’s solo style was analyzed and compared through transcriptions of three improvisations performed during contrasting points in his career: “Intermission Riff” from 1956, “Just Friends” from 1978, and “It Might As Well Be Spring” from 1985. -
