WHAT IT IS During knee replacement surgery, the damaged bone and cartilage of your knee are removed and your joint surfaces are replaced with plastic and metal parts. Generally, surgery to replace your knee lasts about two hours.

WHY IT’S NEEDED Osteoarthritis, a “wear and tear” joint disease that affects mostly middle-aged and older adults, is the most common problem that leads to knee replacement surgery. Other forms of arthritis, fractures, torn cartilage or torn ligaments also can lead to permanent damage to your knee joints over time.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTERWARD After knee replacement, you will likely stay in the hospital one to three nights. You may begin physical therapy at the hospital or at home, then transition to outpatient rehab. By carefully following your physical therapist’s instructions, you should experience significant relief and greater mobility. Depending on the type of job you do, you can expect to return to work in one to three months.
