Update: HMH COVID-19 Situational Analysis The number of HMH inpatients who tested positive for COVID-19 or are awaiting COVID-19 test results has decreased 9.2% since yesterday. This statistic includes our long-term care facilities. The volume of COVID-19 patients at our hospitals decreased 9.5%. We’re now seeing many days of near double digit decreases.

Reminder: COVID-19 Recovery Efforts Thanks to your hard work, skill and dedication, along with the stay home and social distancing efforts of the community, we are seeing a downward trend in COVID-19 patients. What does this mean? Although we are still far from declaring a victory, we can now begin the process of developing plans to reopen our services to the community.

We have assembled an interdisciplinary team dedicated to reviewing the status of all of our hospitals to determine how soon we can expand the medically necessary and time sensitive procedures that are being performed under the Governor’s Executive Order (109). The following steps will allow us to accomplish that expansion and prepare us for when the executive order is lifted.

Please know safety is our top priority. We are taking every effort and precaution to keep our facilities, team members, physicians and patients safe, including the following:

 Carrying out a safe and efficient triage process for COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients in our Emergency Departments.  Creation of separate areas within our hospitals for the treatment of COVID-19 patients and non-COVID-19 patients.  Providing specially designated entrances at our hospitals for certain procedures and services.  Monitoring the temperature of all patients, visitors, team members and physicians who enter our facilities.  Rigorously cleaning and sanitizing all Hackensack Meridian facilities, including the use of ultra violet (UV) light cleaning and fogging. We have engaged a nationally recognized, third-party organization to oversee these significant efforts, including the testing of air, water and surfaces to make sure they’re safe for our patients, team members and physicians.  Testing all patients staying at our hospitals.  Continuing to provide masks to our patients, visitors, team members, and physicians and requiring them to wear the masks when at our Hackensack Meridian facilities.  Ensuring our team members and physicians have the appropriate personal protective equipment.  Practicing social distancing throughout our facilities and wherever possible.  Restricting visitation at all of our hospitals and nursing and rehabilitation facilities, consistent with directives from the state of .

In addition to the above measures, we are developing a strategy to offer antibody and diagnostic testing to team members and physicians. Many of you have requested this testing and we will be announcing further details later this week.

As we continue to make progress against COVID-19 and begin our journey back to normal, we will continue to keep you informed of new protocols and efforts to help minimize the spread of the virus, reassure the public we are ready to fully provide all of their health needs and keep our team members, physicians and patients safe. We will be directing the community to our COVID-19 Recovery Resource web page at HackensackMeridianHealth.org/GetCareNow.

New: Recognizing Drive-Thru COVID-19 Testing Centers Hackensack Meridian Health has implemented four Drive-thru COVID-19 testing centers under the leadership of Jim Clarke, M.D., Laura Frank and Christine Galluzzo. This was a multi- department team effort that required the collaboration of team members in the many departments including Facilities, IT (EPIC, networking, and infrastructure), HMH Medical Group physicians, practice mangers, revenue cycle and team members, HMH Urgent Care, materials management, risk management, community outreach and hospital administration.

The Drive-thru teams got together to celebrate and thank Dr. Clarke for his leadership and vision in making these drive-thru sites a reality very quickly, so we could address the needs of our communities. The sites are located at Edison, Jackson, Maywood and North Bergen. At this time, the sites are testing patients who have been prescreened by practitioners for COVID-19 and have appointments, team member referred by Occupational Health and first responders.

New: In the News - We’ve Begun to Heal Bodies During This Pandemic. Now It’s Time to Heal the Mind. The Star Ledger/NJ.com has featured an op-ed by Don Parker, president, Behavioral Health Care Transformation Services/Integrative Health & Medicine, on the need to heal the mind during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s a challenge to remain hopeful when there’s not a definitive end of this pandemic in sight or a way to return to life as normal. We’re not meant to wear masks and gloves, missing out on smiles and a comforting touch. But for help dealing with this, consider reaching out to a therapist or counselor so he or she can provide the support you need in this challenging time,” Don Parker says.
