By enhancing erotic stimulation it may be possible to experience many other benefits spanning several domains such as the endocrine, immune, circulatory and neurological. -

However, not only an agreement on this remains elusive, but also effective clinical treatments against human aging have not been forthcom- ing. In this Opinion paper I suggest that the complexity involved in aging is such that we need to remodel our thinking to involve a much more ‘systems-oriented’ approach. I explore four main A R T I C L E H I S T O R Y principles which should be employed by those who are working on finding treatments against age- related degeneration. First, I discuss the problems encountered in translating laboratory research into effective therapies for humans. It is an overview of some of the women and men committed to making a much longer and healthier life possible. They have expressed themselves behind their test tubes, in their academic research, but also in front of cameras. The diversity of their approaches illustrates the difficulty and richness of the work in this field that concerns us all. Aubrey De Grey Aubrey de Grey is an English scientist, former computer scientist at the University of Cambridge and was initially self-taught in bio-gerontology. He now lives in California. Inspired by Dr Denham Harman's 1972 "Mitochondrial Theory of Aging", he developed a project called SENS (Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence) to prevent age-related physical and mental decline. -

She was born on 21 February 1875, became the longest-lived human on 12 May 1990 when she was 115.21 and died on 4 August 1997 at age 122.45 years. In this chapter, we use data available on 25 September 2017 on people who reached age 110, supercentenarians, to address the following questions: (1) How likely is it that a person has reached age 122.45? (2) How unlikely is it that Calment’s record has not yet been broken? (3) How soon might it be broken? Assuming a constant annual probability of death of 50% after age 110, we found that the probability that a person who survived to age 110 would have lived to 122.45 by 25 September 2017 is 17.1%. Furthermore, we calculated that there was only a 20.3% chance that Calment’s record would have been broken after 1997 but before 2017. Finally, we estimated that there is less than a 50% chance that someone will surpass Calment’s lifespan before 2045. -

Cybernetic Principles of Aging and Rejuvenation: the buffering-challenging strategy for life extension Francis Heylighen Evolution, Complexity and Cognition group Vrije Universiteit Brussel Abstract: Aging is analyzed as the spontaneous loss of adaptivity and increase in fragility that characterizes dynamic systems. Cybernetics defines the general regulatory mechanisms that a system can use to prevent or repair the damage produced by disturbances. According to the law of requisite variety, disturbances can be held in check by maximizing buffering capacity, range of compensatory actions, and knowledge about which action to apply to which disturbance. This suggests a general strategy for rejuvenating the organism by increasing its capabilities of adaptation. Buffering can be optimized by providing sufficient rest together with plenty of nutrients: amino acids, antioxidants, methyl donors, vitamins, minerals, etc. Knowledge and the range of action can be extended by subjecting the organism to an as large as possible variety of challenges. These challenges are ideally brief so as not to deplete resources and produce irreversible damage. However, they should be sufficiently intense and unpredictable to induce an overshoot in the mobilization of resources for damage repair, and to stimulate the organism to build stronger capabilities for tackling future challenges. This allows them to override the trade-offs and limitations that evolution has built into the organism’s repair processes in order to conserve potentially scarce resources. Such acute, “hormetic” stressors strengthen the organism in part via the “order from noise” mechanism that destroys dysfunctional structures by subjecting them to strong, random variations. They include heat and cold, physical exertion, exposure, stretching, vibration, fasting, food toxins, micro-organisms, environmental enrichment and psychological challenges. -
