Anti-Ageing Conference London September 9-11, 2010

1 1 Welcome Dear Colleague,

I am both pleased and proud to welcome you to the 7th Annual Anti- Ageing Conference London (AACL) 2010. We are now in our seventh year of providing a unique, high quality experience for the leading physicians, researchers ,scientists and medical students who will be attending. We are excited about our distinguished lecturers and the interesting topics which they will be presenting this year.

I am also happy to report that we have made significant progress toward another of the goals we set for these conferences - that was to increase awareness and understanding of anti-ageing medicine in the UK, and to bring the message of preventive healthcare to greater numbers of medical practitioners. It gives me great satisfaction to see that we are accomplishing what we set out to do. This year I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our Medical Students. HBHealth set up a medical sponsorship scheme 4 years ago, this allows medical students to attend the AACL conference as our guests giving them a unique opportunity to ‘rub shoulders’ with our illustrious speakers from around the world

I am confident that you as well will enjoy this opportunity for networking with other members of the international medical and scientific community, and to meet leading scientists in 21st century medicine. This conference blends a high quality academic programme typical of a large scientific congress, with the intimacy, exclusivity and access to speakers typical of a small symposium. In addition to the lectures, the conference hosts an exhibition, with the newest products and services available to prevent ageing, disease and improve longevity. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to our 2 Keynote Speakers Professor Bernd Klein-Gunk President of the German Society of Anti-Aging Medicine (GSAAM) His presentation on Saturday Anti-Aging the first 4000 years will be truly fascinating On Friday our Keynote Speaker will be Dr Eric Braverman. For clients to achieve their personal wellness and performance goals it requires care and planning. Our teams include internationally respected doctors, working alongside a wide range of superior practitioners, who through an integrated approach deliver great results every time. Our research includes continued development of nutritional and cosmetic products designed to maximise client and patient results. The World Anti Aging Academy of Medicine (WAAAM) is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the health of the public, and the advancement of education in connection with anti- ageing medicine. By promoting understanding and research into anti-aging medicine, it is hoped that the speciality will become better established in the UK and abroad. The wider use of anti- aging therapies should lead to general relief from the effects of degenerative disease, as well as a reduction in the economic burden of treating and caring for sufferers.

The WAAAM was incorporated on 15 August 2001 in England/Wales. It is not a commercial profit-making organization and is registered with the UK Charity Commission. The Academy has been established with the support and active involvement of the board of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (‘A4M’). For further details please visit www.waaam.org

The BHMA was formed in 1983 by a group of medical doctors and students as an organisation for professionals and members of the public who wanted to adopt a more holistic approach in their own life and work. Twenty years on, the Association is just as determined to play a major role in ensuring that a whole person approach is central to the effective practice of healthcare. To achieve our core purpose, the Association will reach out to decision makers and those working in healthcare to demonstrate the added value that holistic practice brings to patients and practitioners alike. Through a significant nationwide membership of influential and like-minded individuals there is no doubt that the BHMA can help to shape the future of healthcare in the UK. We have, therefore, developed a programme of activity that is designed to enable the dissemination of information, and to create opportunities for people with an interest in whole person care to share their experiences and ideas.

Why is the BHMA relevant? It is a time of great opportunity for holistic thinking and practice. Despite the huge increase in the NHS budget and advances in the medical management of diseases such as cancer and heart failure, patients and health workers alike are dissatisfied with the quality of

healthcare. There is a widespread search for better integration of healthcare effort, and holistic understandings of health and dignity. At the same time, advances in science reveal that the body-mind behaves more like a self-healing hologram than a stack of diagnostic categories. Increasingly researchers challenge the relevance of test tube science when considering the dynamic interplay of factors required for good health: an aliveness of spirit and quality therapeutic relationships.

The British Society of Integrated Medicine was formed in 2002 by a group of Doctors involved in combining the best of complimentary and nutritional medicine with conventional medicine. The looming issue of revalidation for Doctors, and also the regulation of this are of medicine by the Healthcare Commission has been and continues to be an important driving force for us gathering together as a Society. We held our inaugural conference at the Royal College of Physicians in May 2003. Since then we have had two conferences a year at the Royal College.

We also have members who are complimentary therapists, vets and dentists. Our conference topics and interests of our members covers a wide field. eW would like to attract as many new members as possible.

After negotiating for over two years with the Charities Commission, we are nearly at the stage where we are registered as a charity.

Curaderm-BEC5 in 2010, the Past, Present and Future of a Clinically Proven, Non Melanoma Skin Cancer & Keratosis Cream Treatment

This paper explores, from a consumers/clinical observers perspective, a review of the most important areas of scientific and medical evidence that demonstrates the clinically proven success of Curaderm-BEC5 for the treatment of malignant and non malignant, non-melanoma & keratosis skin cancer cream. Curaderm-BEC5 is a 98% natural cream formulation first published by Dr. Bill Elliot Cham in 1980 and made commercially available, under patent, since 1990.

The paper begins with a summary of the “marketing hype” of Curaderm-BEC5 as presented on internet websites world wide. There are several consistent themes of benefits made available by the manufacturer and mentioned within tens of thousands of websites. Therefore, a standard list of clinically relevant user information, in layman’s terms, will be presented.

The how question is then immediately explored. Specifically, the unique and ground breaking discovery that glycoalkaloids solasodine glycosides (BEC) causes the death of cancer cells without affecting normal cells. The presenter will show the unique mode of action discovered by Biochemist Dr. Bill Elliot Cham and his team of researchers at the University of Queensland and subsequently independently verified by a myriad of scientists and biochemists world wide.A secondary aspect of the how will also be explored, specifically, how does one use Curaderm-BEC5. The steps of a usual Curaderm treatment will be explained within the perspective of the unique Mode of Action. Clinical examples and published research will be shown for cases of Keratosis. Basal cell carcinoma and Squamous cell carcinoma.

Since it is politically correct to question any potential cure for cancer, the presenter will briefly summarise some other ongoing cancer research, directly related to the BEC discovery independent of Dr. Cham. Regarding specifically the success of Curaderm-BEC5 in 2010, the presenter will summarise some independent clinical reviews by respected Medical Professionals. The specific references will demonstrate why the word cancer can be used correctly when associated with the acronym of research collectively termed “BEC’’.

Finally, a few recent case studies & anecdotal testimonial by users will be presented. The paper concludes with a very recent revelation that should have Medical Professionals turning their head towards learning more about this breakthrough cream technology that was first formulated in 1980.

Dr. Roger Elie Amar is a French plastic surgeon graduated from University of Paris France. He has been assistant professor in Anatomy and assistant professor in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Marseilles, France. He is an active member of French societies: the French Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (SOF.CPRE) and French college of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He was a founding member of the French society of aesthetic plastic surgery (SOFCEP).

Dr. Amar is an active member of the American Society for Aesthetic Surgery (ASAPS) and the Spanish Society of Aesthetic Plastic and reconstructive surgery (SECPRE). He is the author of three medical books in MASSON Paris (in French), Reconstruction Mammaire 1978, ABC de Chirurgie Plastique et Esthétique 1981, Les Greffes de Peau- Biologie et Technique 1985. From 1997, Dr. Roger Amar has developed the FAMI Technique (Fat Auto-Graft Muscle Injection) for facial rejuvenation. It was a total change in the classical concept of Fat injection with organic pan-facial rejuvenation at once. FAMI is offering longevity and predictability with grafts injected safely into the mimic muscles with adipose mesenchymal stem cells. After hundred of patients operated successfully and the progress of his own research on adipose stem cells the FAMI technique can challenge any invasive surgery of the men or women faces. This procedure consists of an autograft of adult stem cells from the patient’s own fat in order to restore muscle and bone surfaces FAMI offers natural rejuvenation without scars, avoiding in many cases face-lifting and blepharoplasty. FAMI can be used to correct physical muscular defects of the face or body.

Cell therapy for facial rejuvenation (F.A.M.I.) Fat autograft muscle injection

Background – Described by many authors, facial fat grafting has been largely limited to the subcutaneous plane with vague reference to injecting into the muscular planes. The technique FAMI specifically targets tissue planes and the individual muscles of facial expression to engraft adipose tissue and the mesenchymal cells within lipoaspirates. Methods – case presentation selected from a 10-year experience of hundred of patients. Results – Single, rarely two sessions of the FAMI technique resulted in marked improvement in facial volumes and contours. Conclusions –The FAMI technique for pan-facial rejuvenation provides an improved method for restoring the atrophic effects of aging and has application for other defects caused by development, disease, and trauma

Hormones and the Brain

Cognitive decline and development of dementia is now recognized to be multi-factorial. The presence of medical illnesses can damage cognition i.e. atrial fibrillation, diabetes, thyroid disease, heart failure, inflammation, high blood pressure, smoking and other illicit drug use, elevated cholesterol and any cardiac disease or vascular risk factors have all been linked to progression of dementia,

2223 23 which takes at least 10-20 years to develop. There are at least five stages of cognitive decline prior to dementia with numerous variations. Typically dementia begins with the following order of losses: brain processing speed, memory, attention, personality and temperament change, IQ changes, and ultimately dementia.

Furthermore, numerous studies have linked hormone supplementation as protective in the development of dementia regardless of whether or not these hormones are deficient but more so when they are deficient. Hormonal deficiencies that are linked are: Growth hormone beginning from age 30 in both men and women, estrogen lossbeginning at age 40in women, testosterone loss beginning at age 40 in men and DHEA loss beginning in both men and women at age 50. The loss of luteinizing and sex binding globulin hormones may also be associated with the development of dementia with age.

A wide range of medical and psychiatric illnesses including depression are contributing to the progression of dementia which occurs in most Americans between the ages of 50 and 80 such that 50% of all Americans are fully demented by age 80. Dr. Braverman has identified the marker of the stages of cognitive decline as well as hormonal cornerstone abnormalities associated with most forms of dementia.

Leptin Imbalances and Aging - The Secret of Obesity Science

Leptin, a protein produced by neurological tissue, primarily the hypothalamus, brain stem, and adipose tissue, acts as a peripheral metabolic signal to the brain. It reaches the brain, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and accumulates in neuronal cell bodies expressing leptin receptors. This protein reduces body weight by inhibiting feeding behavior and increasing fuel expenditure. It is thus an integral component of energy homeostasis and regulation of body weight. Although it is thought that these effects are mediated by the direct action of leptin on hypothalamic neurons, recent studies have found close interactions between leptin and the D2 receptors and serotonergic system. During the aging process, there is a decline in the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems that are both activated by leptins. There is also greater adiposity despite high serum leptin levels, in part due to a reduction in the number of leptin receptors in these areas of the brain.

Aging is associated with a gradual loss of physiological functions and a decline in plasma concentrations of several steroid hormones. There is a correlation between declining estrogen and testosterone levels and low leptin levels. Aging-associated alterations in body composition, which include increased fat mass, loss in muscle size and strength, and loss of bone, are at least in part related to specific endocrine changes. In particular, individuals with elevated leptin levels develop osteoporosis, hyperlipidemia, and obesity. Extremely low leptin levels may be associated long term with oligomenorrhea, anorexia, too much thinness, and dementia. Therefore, it would be beneficial to maintain leptin levels in a middle or low range so that individuals may stay thin as they treat their brain chemistry.

Leptin is of particular importance in obesity. Although the body mass index (BMI) is commonly used as a measurement of obesity, we have found it to be an inaccurate measure of body fat. When compared to a direct measure of adiposity, the dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan, we found that BMI misclassified nearly 40% of our patient population. We found that individuals who fell into a normal weight obesity category, with normal BMI but obesity level body fat percentage, had elevated leptin. By incorporating additional parameters such as gender and age in addition to leptin levels into the BMI formula, we found that the sensitivity and specificity of the equation were improved. Testing for leptin is a relatively inexpensive lab test that can help to predict obesity for those individuals who appear to be fit but are actually at risk for this condition. In addition, genetically low leptin patients have reduced body fat relative to BMI while genetically elevated leptin patients have elevated body fat relative to BMI.

The Economics of an Ante-Ageing Practice: A Dimensional Analysis of the Relevant Increments in Healthcare and Practice Success

Over the last decade, there has been a notable surge in the number of practices and practitioners offering ante-ageing therapies and treatments. With more and more physicians transitioning to medical aesthetics, what will the impact be for the comprehensive medical science of anti-ageing medicine as a whole? The term ante-ageing medicine lacks conceptual clarity and definition. Furthermore, the qualities of the components, process, and outcomes of care have not been clearly articulated. This presentation provides a dimensional analysis of ante-ageing medicine provision, in order to elucidate the concept, and its context and consequences, as portrayed through available evidence and literature. As a method, dimensional analysis is rooted in symbolic interaction and grounded theory. As such, it provides a useful tool with which to analyze existing literature on ante-ageing medicine. In this dimensional analysis, patient treatment is the dominant perspective of ante- ageing medicine. It demonstrates that the current consequences of ante-ageing medicine are identifiable and dominated by extrinsic results, rather than the optimal intrinsic solutions that could improve the quality of life. These consequences suggest that the focus of ante- ageing medicine should be on the medical and economic benefits rather than the number of treatments and issues around the experience that excludes the advantages that rejuvenation wellness medicine can offer patients and society as a whole. 2425 25 Dr Carlos Evangelista Dr. Carlos Evangelista M.D., was born in 1957, and was graduated in 1984 from the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Lisbon University, Portugal. Anti-Aging Articular Process

Within all the pathologies that affect individuals from the 4th decade of life, osteoarthritis is the most common, estimated to occur in 90% of the adult population. It is has old has the history of mankind. Osteoarthritis results from an abnormal process between the cartilage destruction and its repair. The basic function of joint cartilage is to reduce friction between two bone surfaces when they execute any kind of movement, functioning as a mechanism to absorb shock. To improve this mechanism, there is the synovial fluid that lubricates the joints. To maintain a good articular health we have sysadoas (Symptomatic Slowing Acting Drugs) that includes hyaluoronic acid, glucosamine and condrotine. In patients with osteoarthritis, the concentration of hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid is diminished, so the treatment called for viscosupplementation begins to become important. This process consists in a series of intra-articular injections with the aim to restore the quality and concentration of this component in the synovial fluid, improving the lubrication and shock absorption capability and subsequently reducing pain. Glucosamine and condrotine contribute to the cellular protection, condrocites protection and maintenance of the structural support of the cartilage. The author presents the recent concepts and therapeutic forms of osteoarthritis whose goal is to prevent and treat the anti-aging articular process.

Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP): A Non- Invasive Out Patient Procedure to Revascularize the Heart Muscle without Open Heart Surgery.

The heart and cardiovascular system play such pivotal roles in maintaining our overall health and fitness that taking measures to insure heart health is vital to any anti-aging or longevity program. In a 2005 study published in Heart Failure Monitor, Gielen, et al noted the striking similarities between aging and chronic heart failure, including “exercise intolerance, reduced cardiac functional reserve during exercise, and loss of skeletal muscle mass as a result of inflammation and catabolism.” They also described vascular aging as a “progressive decrease in flow-mediated, endothelium-dependent vasodilation” and showed that aging of the cardiovascular system could begin in individuals as young as 25-35 years of age. In addition, Lakatta and Levy state in a 2003 paper published in Circulation, “There is a continuum of expression of cardiac structural and functional alterations that occurs with age in healthy humans, and these age-associated cardiac changes seem to have relevance to the steep increases in LVH, chronic heart failure, and AF seen with increasing age.” It is clear that taking steps to maintain cardiovascular health is an essential component of any Longevity or Rejuvenation Program. No matter how much we may wish otherwise, the fact remains that we cannot stop Time. But is there anything that we can to stop or even reverse the harmful effects that aging and atherosclerosis have on the heart and cardiovascular system? Fortunately, there is. Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) is a 50-year-old, non-invasive technology that has proven to be a safe and effective alternative or complement to invasive, high-risk procedures such as angioplasty and bypass surgery. Unlike these conventional treatments that target individual blockages, EECP treats heart disease as chronic system-wide illness. By recruiting and helping to develop new collateral blood vessels, EECP maximizes blood flow to the heart, as well as throughout the entire body.

Galina is regularly invited to speak at conferences, shows and seminars on complementary medicine and integrative healthcare.

Colon Hydrotherapy and the Chemistry of Wellbein

The large bowel, a somewhat under-researched organ, plays an important role in the quality of life and maintenance of health as we age. With around 95% of our neuro-hormone of wellbeing, serotonin, being produced it the large intestine, we should always be able to rely on a well-functioning bowel to keep us happy and make sure the toxic load is effectively removed from the body. However, our longer lifespan is often accompanied today by age-related slowing of the function of the large intestine. Such common factors as

* an increase in the transit time; * a reduction in general physical fitness; * 5-HT depletion; * oxidative damage by the ROS due to prolonged exposure to toxic compounds in the stools; * dietary changes resulting in lower-residue diets; * the building of “water debt” and other factors

cause not only slow-transit constipation but also cell dehydration, reduction of muscle tissue elasticity and deformability and other more serious degenerative conditions such as diverticulosis and diverticulitis and colorectal cancers. Doubts are now being cast on the effectiveness of high-fibre diets in mitigating the age- related degeneration of the digestive function. Contemporary colon hydrotherapy, a controlled and measured release of water into the rectum with the purpose of rehydration of the large intestine and repayment of the “water debt”, can also boost serotonin production, accelerate transit time and reduce damage caused by the reactive oxygen species by means of removing excess toxic load and supporting the immune system in the large intestine. This also restores the subjective sense of wellbeing in an individual and sense of increased energy, which, in turn, helps increase mobility and maintain a healthy attitude to life.

How to assess an anti-inflammatory diet

Our experience in the treatment of over 20,000 atopic eczema, urticaria and psoriasis patients shows that besides allergic reactions to foods an increasing number of pseudoallergic reactions caused by toxic-irritative pollutants (formaldehyde, exhaust particles, additive-rich food, nicotine, wood preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals) are responsible for the inflammatory process behind the complex symptoms. Intrauterine and postnatal environmental influences were also reported. The routine analysis of specific IgE- and IgG4-factors in our atopic patients by means of ELISA-assays after challenge meals (CM) showed an increased frequency of specific IgE- and IgG4-antibodies after repeated CM. In 60% of the patients, we simultaneously found raised concentrations of the IgE- and IgG-CIC (p< 0.005) responsible for the delayed allergic reactions in the same group. Further inflammation markers like acute phase proteins (a1‑antitrypsin, a2‑makroglobulin, haptoglobin and caeruloplasmin) showed a surprisingly rapid increase after CM (p< 0.01) in the atopic group; by contrast the control samples remained in the normal range. Serum histamine levels (RIA-Test) also showed a significant increase 1/2 hour after

2829 29 CM and after individual oral provocation with lactose, sucrose, tyramine, serotonine or phenylethylamine, respectively. The carbohydrate intolerance reactions (H2-test) were in good correlation to the significantly lowered disaccharidase activites (lactase, sucrase) in the gut of atopic eczema patients (p< 0.001). This was closely related to chronic intestinal dysbiosis with toxic microbial breakdown products (alcohols, aldehydes, phenols, diamines) leading to an increased intestinal permeability, histamine release and impairment of liver detox functions. On the other side, we found both in atopic eczema and in psoriasis patients pseudoallergic reactions against biogenic amines and constantly raised serum histamine levels (also in fasted patients), suggesting an inhibition of catabolic enzymes (MAO, DAO, NMT). Previously published results from our laboratory showed significantly reduced DAO (p< 0.001) and Type B MAO- (p< 0.05) activities in thrombocyte-rich plasma of atopic eczema and psoriasis patients explaining their intolerance reactions to histamine, tyramine and octopamine rich foods. Last, but not least, the chronic increased levels of free radicals in whole blood and plasma of all patient groups showed significant changes after oral intake of different food homogenates/ juices dependent on their ROS-blocking or ROS-increasing effects (enhanced chemoluminescence test). Our current research shows that appropriate combinations of hypoallergenic protein hydrolysates with particular sugar alcohols and omega-3 fatty acids (Equiderm Plus®) are dramatically enhancing the anti-inflammatory and free radical quenching properties of the mixture, demonstrating an excellent compliance and therapy efficiency in atopic, psoriasis and geriatric patients. With the emergence of affordable microarray gene expression profiling methods, the opportunity arises to ex-vivo test certain combinations for their silencing ability on inflammatory genes before administering the nutraceutical to the patient (nutrigenomic evaluation). The input of the above mentioned nutritional data in a computer supported, individual rotation diet plan (Food Allergy Control®) ensures a gradual improvement of the symptoms and stabilization of the clinical course during and after therapy.

Anti-Aging - The first 4000 Years

A common prejudice against anti-aging medicine is this: It was created in the 1990s, is more a short-lived fashion than a serious field of medicine and the hype is more or less already over.

The exact contrary is true: Anti-aging is one of mankind’s oldest dreams; and anti-aging medicine is as old as the history of healing itself. Already the first known literary document – the sumeric Gilgamesh Epos (ca. 2500 B.C.) – has as its main topic the quest for longevity. Ancient egyptian papyri contain chapters like “How to turn an old (man) into a young (man)”. In China a whole religion – Taoism – was devoted to the quest of longevity.

Lifestyle and esthetic medicine also has its ancient roots. Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, incorporated a number of formulas “against wrinkles” and “to give the face a nicer appearance “ into his work on female disease.

Leading figures of scientific and medical history like England’s Francis Bacon, the founder of the Royal Society, Germany’s C.H. Hufeland, personal doctor to J.W. Goethe, or America’s Benjamin Franklin have devoted much of there work to the question of how to prolong life in a healthy way. The history of endocrinology and hormone replacement therapy is from its very beginnings closely connected with the fight against the process of aging.

For a long time the age-old quest for longevity seemed as futile as another old dream of mankind: to learn how to fly. However, the 20th century saw the last dream come true. Chances are that the 21st century will see the other dream – that of eternal youth – being fulfilled as well.

Metal-Free Dentistry to Avoid Arteriosclerosis and Cancer

There are several important concepts regarding the initiation of arteriosclerosis. One of these is that arteriosclerosis results from the infiltration of the endothelial lining of the arteries with toxic heavy metals, like lead and mercury. The inner lining of the artery is the side where the important vasodilatator substance nitric oxide is created. The endothelium also produces prostacyclin which decreases clotting of blood and causes dilating of arteries. A third important substance is heparin, a potent substance that prevents clots from forming. Excessive deposition of heavy metals in the endothelium diminishes the endothelium`s ability to produce valuable nitric oxide, prostacyclin and heparin. Removal of these toxic metals restores the endothelium`s ability to produce these vital substances which stops and may even reverse arteriosclerosis. Heavy Metals and Cancer Metals can directly and indirectly damage DNA through free radical stress and that means an increased risk of cancer (=genotoxicity). There are also possible non-genotoxic pathways, due to irritation (changing of the cell-millieu) or immuno-toxicity.

Resveratrol - A real benefit or just a conundrum

Genetic polymorphisms and their correlation with phenotype heterogeneity in 100 subjects with chronic cerebrovascular disease in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Laboratoires Réunis, Junglinster, Luxembourg; 2 Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg, Luxembourg

Cerebro-cardio-vascular diseases are estimated to be the leading cause of death and loss of disability-adjusted life years. In the present study, 25 patients received intensive lifestyle advice, 25 received intensive lifestyle advice plus the advice to drink a glass of red wine each day, 25 received the advice to drink only a glass of red wine each day, and the remaining 25 followed their usual lifestyle.

The genetic analysis was carried out to explore the importance of a number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) located in several genes, which are related to energy expenditure, adipogenesis, insulin resistance, blood pressure regulation and body composition. The analysed SNPs were: KIF6 (rs20455), PON1 (Q192R), APOA1 (G-75A), PPARgamma (P12A), FABP2 (A54T), SELP (V640L), SELE (S149R), C5 (rs17611), ADH1C (G78X), ICAM (rs309303), C3 (rs11569562), ApoE (E2/E3/E4), TNFalpha (G-238A), CETP (G-279A), CETP (I405V) and CRP (T-717C).

We found a correlation between different patterns of SNPs and the response to diet. We could also detect SNP-dependent differences in mean systolic blood pressure in the two diet/ sports arms and a difference of the LDL/HDL ratio in the two wine arms compared to the control group.

Further analysis will give a better understanding of gene-environment interactions in metabolic pathways associated with pathological symptoms related to diet and to lack of physical activities as well as with the risk of cardiovasculer diseases, especially of cerebrovascular diseases. The purpose is to develop better target therapeutics upon individual physiological response to dietary and lifestyle habits that vary in the population and are related to different genetic backgrounds.

Nutritional Supplementation with Chlorella for Syndrome X

Syndrome X, also known as metabolic syndrome and visceral fat syndrome, affects 20-30% of the population of industrialized countries. The syndrome is diagnosed according to specific criteria related to waistline, triglyceride and HDL levels, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose. The incidence of Syndrome X increases directly with age until around sixty when it levels off affecting an estimated 40% of the elderly. People with Syndrome X are at increased risk for developing atherosclerosis and suffering from cardiovascular disease and stroke. To reverse these risks associated with Syndrome X, one needs to lose weight, exercise, and make dietary changes to lower the intake of salt, saturated fats, simple sugars, and low-fiber carbohydrates while increasing the consumption of fish, monounsaturated oils, and complex carbohydrates.

The incidence of Type II diabetes is high in people with Syndrome X and their hyperglycemia often requires oral medications to lower blood glucose. Drug treatment, unfortunately, often means life-long dependence on an agent that may for many patients only partially control their hyperglycemia and may also have adverse side effects. For this reason, there is a great deal of interest in non-pharmacological interventions which can better control hyperglycemia and reduce or eliminate the need for drugs.

Non-pharmacological interventions provide effective means to lower blood glucose levels and have been emphasized increasingly as a useful method in the treatment of diabetics (1,2). Dietary modifications have focused on reductions in the daily total caloric intake of foods rich in sugar and fats. Studies have also shown that foods with fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, peas, beans, and whole-grain breads and cereals may help lower blood glucose. These natural foods also tend to be particularly rich in antioxidants (e.g. vitamins C and E) which when combined with soluble fiber are believed to help limit the secondary cardiovascular complications of diabetes. This has led to the hypothesis that the combination of proteins, sugars, fats and fiber which exist together in commonly eaten “whole foods” such as fruits, nuts, vegetables, and cereals and whose intakes are, therefore, highly correlated, act in synergy to produce a hypoglycemic effect. Vegetarians whose diets are rich in fruits and vegetables have substantially lower risk of developing diabetes and hypertension than non-vegetarians (3).

Comprehensive studies have failed to uncover any specific nutrient or combination of nutrients in these diets which improves carbohydrate metabolism (i.e. a hypoglycemic effect) and rather have suggested that it is the “whole food” with its complex combination of nutrients acting synergistically that is responsible. In light of these observations, it seems reasonable to expect that daily dietary supplementation with natural “whole foods” rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fiber may help control the hyperglycemia ofType II diabetics who otherwise enjoy a normal, non-vegetarian diet.

Chlorella pyrenoidosa, another example of a “whole food”, is a unicellular green alga that grows in fresh water and consists of 60% protein, 20% carbohydrate, and about 11% unsaturated fats. These proteins and carbohydrates can provide a steady energy stream to the body without spiking insulin secretion and can also suppress appetite. Chlorella has the highest content of chlorophyll of any known plant and chlorophyll is a well-known detoxifier; removing toxins stored in the body and preventing the uptake of toxins by the cells of the intestines. Chlorella also contains high concentrations of certain vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, nucleic acids, amino acids, enzymes, and other substances. The algae have strong

3435 35 cell walls that prevent their native form from being adequately digested so that only after drying and breaking its cell wall can these organisms be digested by humans. The DYNO®- Mill processing method, used in the manufacture of Chlorella for human consumption, has proven the best method for breaking the cell wall while preserving its nutritional value.

In this presentation, a number of laboratory research and clinical trials we and others have conducted in Japan and the United States will be described which show that daily ingestion of Chlorella helps ameliorate the symptoms of Syndrome X by reducing percent body fat, blood pressure, total serum cholesterol, and fasting glucose levels (4-6). The findings of two studies among those that will be presented are described below.

In one laboratory study, a group of spontaneously obese mice were fed a regular diet and a group of spontaneously obese mice was fed a normal diet with 5% Chlorella (5). After eight weeks, the obese mice fed the diet containing the Chlorella had significantly lower body weight, blood pressure, and insulin levels while having significantly higher levels of adiponectin compared to those obese mice fed their regular diet.

Direct evidence of how consumption of Chlorella helps control blood sugar has only recently come to light. A recent clinical study by Mizoguchi and colleagues examined serum components and used a DNA microarray to examine expression of several thousand genes in white blood cells of 17 subjects diagnosed with Syndrome X consuming 8.5g of Chlorella per day for two months (6). Consumption of Chlorella led to reductions in percentage body fat, total serum cholesterol and fasting glucose levels. Gene expression analysis identified an activation of genes related to both fat metabolism and insulin signaling pathways. Variations in the expression of genes directly involved in to the active uptake of glucose before, during, and after consuming Chlorella provide an explanation for reduced serum glucose; substantiating with physiologic and genetic evidence the findings of numerous clinical studies that showed consumption of Chlorella lowered blood sugar.

Syndrome X is treated with the hope of lowering the patient’s overall risk of cardiovascular disease and its consequences. It is now a generally accepted that a combination of exercise and diet modification is the best way to accomplish this. Furthermore, there is now a substantial body of evidence that the daily consumption of Chlorella with its complex of proteins, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals may also play a role in diminishing the symptoms of Syndrome X by triggering the expression of genes of the insulin signaling pathway.

Later he achieved a Master in the same field at the University ‘La Sapienza’of Rome. From 2006 to January 2010 he was Head of the General Surgery Department at San Marco Hospital in Latina, Italy. Currently he is a Consultant of the General Surgery Department at the Israelite Hospital of Rome. In the last ten years parallel with his surgical activities he has been working on Regenerative Medicine, after having inherited these medical experiences and clinical research from his father. Many scholars have lead in vitro and experimental studies about placenta, amnios and placental extracts as substances able to promote tissue regeneration. In the last 10 years he has developed in his own private clinic a new approach to stimulate and activate innate joint stem cells forming a favourable microenvironment in the area of articular degeneration apt to promote a tissue regeneration. In his Clinic, he has been studying and treating ultra-octogenarian patients always high surgical risk who have been non-responders to currently adopted conservative therapies. He is author of 44 publications, and his studies in “joint self-repair” have been presented in the fifth Stromboli conference and in process of publication.

Self-Repair in Degenerative Joint Disease

This study presents a method for treating and structurally improving articulations affected by Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD). The focus of this analysis is on two groups of patients (pts). The first one composed of patients over-eighties and the second group was from 45 to 55 year old pts. The first group had high surgical risk and both had been non-responders to currently adopted conservative therapies. Scholars like Davis , Filatov and Cerletti have been studying and using the regenerative properties of placenta, amnios and other non vital tissues since the early ‘900’s. These pioneering studies have opened a new track for tissue renewal. More recently, the new biological knowledge about extra cellular nucleic acids, growth factors (GF) - as by-products of trauma response - and heat shock proteins (Hsp) has helped research even further. Building on those experiences, we have developed a regenerative gel obtained with distressed, processed blood, Polydeoxyribonucleotides (Pdrn) and a thickening substance. The objective was to stimulate the local innate stem-cells with our gel in order to induce tissue repair. From 2003 until 2009 we treated 948 pts. As mentioned, the first group was composed of 86 ultra- octogenarian pts with severe osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip and/or knee, and the second group was composed of 90 young pts (around fifty year old) affected by the same disease. Treated patients have been clinically and radiologically evaluated with a follow-up of 6 to 48 months. Results show a statistically significant improvement in terms of pain and joint mobility, sometimes coupled with a clear radiological improvement. Follow-ups show encouraging data in terms of clinical stability over time. During the study we encountered virtually no side effects, adverse reactions or toxicity. Currently the pharmacological treatment of DJD is palliative. It has toxicity and side effects. Patients that can be operated conclude their trial with a prosthesis followed by a long rehabilitation period. This study suggests a new methodological approach and treatment of DJD based on tissue regeneration and restoration resulting in clinical resolution.

3637 37 Mr Noel Thomas Patton

Noel Thomas Patton, founder of T.A. SCIENCES®, was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His boyhood upbringing was a far cry from the breakthrough Biotech business he is engaged in today. Just as T.A. Sciences® is a hybrid of Traditional Chinese Culture and modern science, so is Noel Patton’s life which has included impressive business success both in America and China. A graduate of Indiana University (1969) with an Honors Degree in Philosophy, Noel furthered his studies on the East Coast and is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School. He maintains an ongoing involvement with Young Presidents Organization (YPO) through its CEO and WPO graduate organizations. In 1972 Noel purchased Patton Electric Company, the family appliance manufacturing business started by his father in 1945. By the mid 80’s Patton Electric and many other US manufactures were facing fierce competition from low cost imports. In 1987 he moved with his family to Hong Kong, China, which was just opening up after Mao’s Cultural Revolution. As always a pioneer, Noel was a presence even in rural China at a time when no small American company had yet ventured into that territory. As Noel and his family thrived in the adrenalin-charged culture and sophistication of Hong Kong and China, the business flourished. In 1995 Patton Electric Company was sold to a large publicly traded appliance firm. At this time, Noel began to indulge his passion for knowledge of new developments in age management and the latest breakthroughs in biotechnology. In particular, he began to explore the intersection between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medical science. In 1999 Noel heard Professor Jerry Shay of the University of Texas Southwest give a speech about a naturally occurring enzyme called telomerase that made human cells “young” again. Meeting Dr. Shay was Noel Patton’s introduction to the newly evolving scientific world of Telomere Biology. Noel immediately followed through and contacted leading edge California biotech company Geron Corporation, the industry leader in developing this new scientific frontier. And so began a tremendously positive and rewarding business relationship. Noel and his wife Eve invested in Geron and began helping this California-based firm to expand into Hong Kong. The Pattons were on hand when Geron and the University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong discovered the cellular rejuvenation properties of the single molecule which we now call TA-65. TA-65 is a naturally occurring, but very rare, molecule found in the well known Astragalus plant. In 2002 Noel and Eve secured exclusive worldwide rights to Geron’s Telomerase Activation (TA) technology for non-prescription nutraceutical and cosmeceutical products and in 2007, after 5 years of development and safety testing, opened the T.A. Sciences office in New York City. In 2005 the Pattons facilitated a joint venture between Geron and the University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong. This company, TA Therapeutics (TAT), is developing Geron’s Telomerase Activation (TA) technology for therapeutic prescription drug applications. While TAT’s first drug candidate has the potential to cure a number of serious diseases, TAT hopes to file an application with the United States FDA by the end of 2008 with their first indication being a drug for rebuilding the weakened immune system of HIV/AIDS patients. Noel and Eve currently travel between Hong Kong, California, and New York. The T.A. Sciences CenterTM, located on the Upper East Side in Manhattan markets telomerase activating nutraceutical and cosmeceutical age defying products derived from Geron’s technology.

3637 37 Telomere Biology: The Emerging Paradigm Shift

In the last three decades, there has been a tremendous surge of scientific knowledge of how and why we age. Many scientists are now searching for the cure for aging and are examining technologies that could dramatically extend human healthspan and lifespan. By curing infectious diseases and improvements in sanitation, life expectancy has increased tremendously over the last century. However since the discovery of the Hayflick limit which postulated a theoretical 125-year limit on our lifespan, only one medical therapy shows potential to be able to break through this barrier. That technology is Telomere Biology.

There is a clock that ticks inside every dividing cell of our bodies. This clock is found at the tips of our chromosomes, in a region called the telomere. When human cells divide, telomeres shorten, and the length of the telomeres correlates with the age of these cells. We know that when telomeres get too short that cells either become senescent or die. This telomere clock is postulated to be the clock of aging.

The 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded jointly to Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase. These three scientists have solved a major problem in biology: how the chromosomes can be copied in a complete way during cell divisions and how they are protected against degradation.

Inside every one of our cells is a gene that when turned on produces an enzyme called telomerase. Telomerase stops the telomere clock from ticking, and if it gets turned on permanently, it gives cells the ability to divide forever. Normally the gene for telomerase is turned on only in our reproductive cells; it is turned off in almost all other cells. A small-molecule compound that activates telomerase could possibly turn it back on and prevent the shortening of telomeres.

Control of telomere length is necessary if we hope to ever be able to eliminate the 125-year limit on our lifespan. And even if we don’t live that long, it is the first crucial step toward allowing us to seriously extend our ability to live a vigorous, healthy life. Telomere shortening could be the reason for ageing, not only in the individual cells but also in the organism as a whole. These discoveries have added a new dimension to our understanding of the cell, shed light on disease mechanisms, and stimulated the development of potential new therapies. (Nobel Prize Committee Press Release)

The first product to emerge from this new science is TA-65®, a single small molecule derived from the Chinese herb astragalus. In laboratory studies using human cell lines including fibroblast cells which normally do not express any telomerase, TA-65® was shown to unequivocally lengthen telomeres. TA-65® is the first and only commercially available telomerase activator that is safe for human consumption.

Each batch of TA-65® starts with 3 tons of astragalus root grown in a specific region of Inner Mongolia. Through a closely guarded proprietary process, a single molecule (TA-65®) is separated out from over 2,000 other molecules and purified to a drug-like quality. There are no other similar products available on the market.

Currently, TA-65 is the only scientifically-proven Telomerase Activator in the world available to the public. The molecule was discovered in 2000 by leading biotech company, the Geron Corporation in Menlo Park, California, and was exclusively licensed to TA Sciences in 2002.

TA-65 has been proven to activate telomerase by two independent research laboratories. Geron Chief Researcher Calvin Harley demonstrated that TA-65 induced Telomerase Activity transiently in neonatal keratinocytes. Bill Andrews and his lab at showed telomerase transiently activated by TA-65 in fetal lung fibroblasts. Most scientists who have worked with TA-65 are taking it.

These findings establish conclusively that TA-65 transiently activates telomerase. It is widely accepted in the scientific community that the only way to lengthen telomeres is through the activation of telomerase. It is also widely accepted that individuals with long telomeres are healthier and live longer.

3839 39 TA-65’s ability to activate telomerase and increase telomere length in humans has led to the following:

* Lengthening of the Shortest Telomeres. (These are the ones that really matter; it only takes one short telomere out of the 92 in every cell to send a cell into crisis.) * Improved Immune system: In particular, the % and absolute number of senescent CD8+/28- cells has significantly decreased. This is a reversal of what normally happens with age. * Improved bone density * Improved cardiovascular and hormonal biomarkers that normally show decline with age. * There are also anecdotal results, such as a decrease in presbyopia, more energy and improved athletic performance, but these effects are not universal and vary among individua

Human trial results substantiating these claims are to be published very soon in a peer-reviewed scientific journal . Short Telomeres have been associated with maladies in these tissues:

* Immune cells memory and nave * Heart cardiomyocytes * Hematopoietic stem cells * Lung alveolar cells * Skin dermis, epidermis, vasculature * Vascular intima (endothelium) * Osteoblasts, MSCs * Liver hepatocytes * Retinal pigmented tissue of eye * Chondrocytes * Skeletal muscle * Kidney cortex * Neurons

The Safety and Efficacy Record for TA-65 is powerful.

* 5 years of development and safety testing before the introduction of TA-65 * There are currently hundreds of clients taking TA-65, some for as long as 3 years * Not a single adverse reaction reported by our licensed physicians * Not a single diagnosis of new cancer * Not a single report of increased cancer load for clients who already had cancer * Not a single diagnosis of new cardiovascular disease

CONCLUSIONS

* There is a growing body of evidence associating most age-related maladies with short telomeres.

* This same body of evidence also clearly establishes that people with long telomeres age healthier and look younger

* As we age our telomeres shorten.

* Exercising and healthy habits over an extended period of time can slow the attrition of telomeres, but telomere length continually declines as we age.

* People who have not led a healthy lifestyle have accelerated the decline of their telomere lengths, and most likely will suffer premature aging and associated maladies.

* There is only one way to intervene scientifically to stop telomere shortening, and that is by activating telomerase. And, there is only one proven telomerase activator today.

Aging-Reversing Properties of Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone (TRH)

Work in our laboratory has shown the remarkable and varied effects of TRH in the rapid reversal of aging-related changes and alterations in old rodents. It was also demonstrated that these restoring effects of TRH were not exerted via the thyroid gland, with the obvious increase of synthesis or secretion of thyroid hormones, but depended on a newly found and rather unexpected direct activity of TRH. We suggested that the tripeptide TRH, thanks to its ubiquitous localization in nature and its high concentration in key tissues such as the pineal gland, the pancreatic insulin-producing beta cells and the anterior hypothalamic area, represents a vehicle for most fundamental energy-regulating and hormone-synchronizing activities. In fact, the restoring effects of TRH could be seen in all models used, such as aging, immunodeficient animals, virus-infected and stressed mice, hypothalamus lesioned mice and in particular in old animals with typical adiposity and progressive decay of neuroendocrine, immune and hormonal functions. TRH associated to melatonin normalizes lipid metabolism and prolongs longevity in aging mice. All this previous work prompted us to study the effects of short-term, acute administration of TRH or its chronic oral administration, on organs, tissues and aging-related metabolic and hormonal markers, in order to acquire more knowledge on effects, dosage and timing of administration according to its circadian cyclicity. In addition, we wanted to verify its anti-aging effects on two most fundamental functions, namely gonadal- reproductive and kidney-urinary. The results demonstrate that both a short-term, acute or a chronic, long-term oral administration of TRH to old, aging mice, results into positive changes and rapid correction to more juvenile levels of most typical aging-related hormonal and metabolic alterations. Remarkably, 4-month oral treatment with TRH maintains testes function in aging mice. As hinted by the significant increase of testes weight, TRH taken from the drinking water produces a maintenance and/or reconstitution of testes structure and function as shown by active proliferation and formation of mature spermatogonia and intensive spermatogenesis in the follicles. Apparently TRH greatly enhances the final maturation process of

4041 41 spermatogonia to spermatozoa. 4-month oral treatment with TRH protects the kidneys from amylod and hyalin infiltration of both tubuli and glomeruli, which is typical of aging mice. In fact, massive deposits of amyloid and hyalin material are clearly infiltrating the shrunken glomeruli of untreated mice with loss of filtration capacity, while hardly present in TRH-treated mice. Massive hyalin degeneration can also be observed in the tubular vessels of the untreated control mice. The extensive and repeated experiments with parenteral and oral administration of TRH show a most remarkable aging-delaying and apparently even aging-reversing effects of the neuropeptide TRH. Again, similarly to melatonin, we are confronted with an anti- aging agent with a broad spectrum of activities which must be necessarily linked to a most fundamental role in the regulation of metabolic and hormonal functions. Setting the clock back on ageing eyes: treating presbyopia by laser eye surgery

Presbyopia or ageing-eyes is a change that affects all human beings. Sometime during the 40’s we lose the ability to zoom our focus from distance to near. Initially we start holding things further away to read, until our arms are no longer long enough. We describe novel approach to correcting presbyopia using the most advanced excimer laser technology (Carl Zeiss Meditec MEL80) in a ten minute pain-free procedure that recovers in most patients within a few hours. The MEL80 is commonly used for correction of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism which it does by reshaping the corneal surface to change the focusing power of the eye from a point to infinity. Using the MEL80, presbyopia is treated by a procedure called Laser Blended Vision. In Laser Blended Vision the optics of the eye are altered so that rather than just focusing on a point, the depth-of-focus of the eye is expanded akin to looking at a photograph with both the foreground and the background in focus. In our studies carried out at the London Vision Clinic, 365 patients with either pure presbyopia (perfect distance vision) or presbyopia combined with myopia up to -8.50 D, hyperopia up to +5.75 D with astigmatism up to 3.00 D were treated. Mean follow-up was 12.4 months. Of all patients, 96% were able to achieve 20/20 distance vision and 98% could see 20/25. Ninety-nine percent of patients could read newsprint or better without glasses. Binocularly, 96% of patients could read newsprint or better while enjoying 20/20 distance vision simultaneously. No eye lost 2 or more lines of corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), while 37% gained lines of CDVA. Laser Blended Vision offers a highly effective and safe treatment for the management of presbyopia.

Pre-conference Seminar - Digestion & Absorption - Beyond Nutrition: A journey into the gut microcosm

In recent years there has been a growing interest, supported by a large number of experimental and epidemiological studies outlining the beneficial effects of some commonly used food derived products capable of preventing various age-related pathologic conditions, which range from cancer to neurodegenerative diseases.

Besides the importance of nutrients and active compounds contained in food, the workshop/ seminar will focus on the relevance of the organs where digestion and absorption of nutrients occur. Because the food we consume creates the intestinal micro-environment this in turn has a fundamental influence on the pathophysiology of many diseases.

The contents of the gut are an ‘inner’ world that is ‘outside’ the cellular body. Its surface is a frontier with an area 100 meters square and a thickness of one cell .Gut flora is an organ which contains more microbial cells than the cellular body has mammalian cells (100 trillion). In this context eukaryotes and prokaryotes have developed mutually beneficial relationships over a millennia of evolutionary adaptation. Similarly bacteria in our gut relies on our diet and the protected environment of our bodies just as our health depends on by- products of microbial metabolism. The normal intestinal microflora constitutes a huge chemical factory that alters our food and our gastrointestinal secretions. The benefit from their activity is multiplex and translates into

4445 45 * increased energy for the gut epithelial cells * a balanced absorption of salt and water * nitrogen recycling * the breakdown of complex lipids and cholesterol * detoxification of waste compounds

The gut is a sensory organ. The mechanism by which the gut senses and responds to nutrients involves the ‘interplay’ of multiple complex pathways.

The gut is a neuro -endocrine organ. Every neurotransmitter found in the brain is also found here. The gut has a brain of its own, an intact and independent nervous system.

The gut is the largest organ of immune function in the body; 70% of our lymphocytes live here. In addition to regulating digestion and absorption the pathways stimulated by molecules in the gut lumen mediate gastric motility, food intake and satiety.

Finally we will explore how foods can be designed to modulate digestion and to promote health by changing the physical properties of digesta.

The relationship between an inefficient immune system and ageing

A significant question around aging is the role played by the immune system in causing us to age. Or is this the wrong way to approach the subject? Should we consider the effect that our aging process has on the efficacy and energy levels in the immune system? On a second level, there is no question now that infections are once again becoming major causes of illness and death. They adversely affect the overall functions of our bodies in ways known to accelerate ageing; so, theoretically, the right antibiotics, correctly used, should help keep us young. However, synthetic antibiotics are not only non-specific but they are also becoming increasingly ineffective due to increasing problems of resistance. Many also have intrinsic toxicity for humans. Therefore, would a “revolutionary new” molecule that outshines antibiotics offer a route to anti-aging?

Genetic Analysis of Different SNPs as Potential Biomarkers in Colorectal Cancer

Genetic analysis of different SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) as potential prognostic biomarkers in CRC (colorectal cancer) – a pilot study -

Laboratoires Réunis, Junglinster, Luxembourg; 2Laboratoire de Recherche sur le Cancer et les Maladies du Sang, Luxembourg

Colorectal cancer (CRC) occurs either in the colon or rectum. It is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Western Europe. The average lifetime risk of developing CRC is about 5%. Any factor leading to increased cell division in the large intestine can potentially increase the probability of developing CRC. Environmental factors such as a diet that is poor in vegetables and rich in fat may promote cell growth. Additionally cigarette smoke, excessive alcohol consumption and inflammatory bowel disorders such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are known to cause overgrowth of colon cells. The majority of CRCs are sporadic cases whereas about 25% of the cases have an inherited compound. Mutations in the genes MSH2 and MLH1 account for only one fifth of the inherited cases of CRC. The rest of the individual colorectal cancer risk is probably due to common genetic variants that, individually, do not contribute much to an increased risk of CRC. However the presence of many variants of these SNPs can contribute to the development of the disease. In this case, the risk can be largely reduced by changing the lifestyle.

In the present study, SNPs related to cell gowth and divison were analysed in 100 patients withan advanced CRC. The carcinomas had a histological staining equal or greater than pT1 and were thus belonging to the adenoma-carcinoma or to the carcinoma stage. The control group consisted of 100 patient not carrying a CRC. Genotyping was performed by melting curve analysis on DNA isolated from whole blood-samples.

The analysed SNPs were: p53 (rs1042522), MDM2 (rs2279744), TGFBR1 (rs334348, rs334349, rs1590), TGFBR4 (rs7871490), SMAD7 (rs4464148, rs12953717, rs493927), PROC3 (rs6983267), FLJ (rs3802842), CHR9 (rs719725) and CHR8 (rs7014346).

Our results show that especially polymorphisms related to TGFBR and SMAD7 seem to be promising CRC predispostion markers. Further studies, which focus on sequencing of the complete genes, will elucidate which role spontaneous mutations as well as known and newly discovered polymorphisms play in the development of CRC.

Path Medical Of course it’s impossible to refute the fact that in every living being, the head is attached to the body. But modern medicine seems to constantly forget this! From treating patients like cars in a Ford assembly line, with each medical specialist focusing only on one part of the body, to neglecting the true causes and effects of illness, the brain’s master role in our physiology is repeatedly overlooked.

At PATH Medical, the brain guides us. We know that every illness ages the brain, and that imbalances in the brain can also lead to illness elsewhere in the body. We know that virtually every disease is diagnosable even before signs and symptoms appear,

and that in order to deliver care that will restore and preserve total health, we must have early diagnosis of chronic disease.

We accomplish this by using state-of-the-art technology, including a head-to-toe ultrasound-based examination, and a computerized EEG to ascertain the functioning of the brain.

We interpret the results and then can begin the process of reversing disease, which is often accelerated aging, and develop a plan of action uniquely tailored to each patient’s biochemistry and needs.

Through lifestyle recommendations, proper nutrition through diet and supplementation, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and psychotropic medications as a last resort, we guide the patient toward a healthier future.

TA Sciences Welcome to T.A. Sciences. We are the first company in the world to offer our clients the ability to fight aging through the emerging science of telomere biology.

Telomeres are DNA repeats located at the ends of all chromosomes. They serve as end- caps that protect our genes. Each time a cell divides, the telomeres grow shorter and shorter. Once telomeres become too short, a cell can no longer divide, and it eventually dies.

However, there is a natural enzyme called telomerase which can help maintain telomere length. In 2001, California bio-tech company Geron, made a paradigm-shifting discovery. They discovered TA-65®, a single molecule that activates telomerase. In 2002 T.A. Sciences licensed exclusive rights to TA-65® from the famed bio-tech company Geron.

Telomerase Activation with TA-65® Telomerase Activation works on all of cells in your body and can improve not only longevity but quality of life. A double-blind, placebo controlled study of TA-65® showed improvements in:

* immune system function * vision * sexual function * energy levels

* skin elasticity * and more.

Learn more about the new world of telomerase activation as a method to intervene in the aging process. Understand how taking TA-65 as part of the year-long Patton Protocol may improve your health and vitality. Find out your real biological age by testing your biomarkers of aging and measuring the length of your telomeres.
