How Great Thou Art

In the Christmas edition of Together, we featured some of the art produced inspiring sermon. The seed was planted, an idea was developing and I was by Jeremy Thomas. In this article Jeremy talks to us about his art and his ready to get started. faith. You can see more of Jeremy’s work throughout this issue. The idea was to tell the story of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection through art, thirty oil paintings to be precise. The number thirty was chosen to reflect the blood money that was paid for Jesus’ betrayal. I approach each image as a prayer, trying to be mindful of the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is a process that has undoubtedly brought me closer to God and has enabled me to look at the Gospels with renewed fervour.

My name is Jeremy Thomas and I am artist in residence at the Tithe Barn in Abergavenny. Behind my workspace is a large glass door that overlooks the beautiful setting of Saint Mary’s priory. It is a bit of a blustery, overcast sort of a day and the hills are barely visible. There is a jar of rather murky turps at my side, a scattering of pens and pencils, an open sketch book and a blank page. I know the subject of the next painting; Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, but in terms of how it will look I am every bit as blank as the page. I know, however, that it will come. I have every faith that it will. I have been working as a full time artist for several years now, though I spent over 14 years as a teacher in a Roman Catholic Primary School. Much of my early work was based upon the landscape, industrial heritage and communities of the South Wales Valleys. At the heart of these paintings you will invariably find a church or chapel as a focal point. Other images contained more subtle references to my Christian faith. In the image “Down Pelts”(opposite), for example, I painted a hidden scene of the Crucifixion. It is there in plain sight, but is very rarely seen. Take a look at the chimney smoke as it waves with the gentle breeze. I guess the image is a metaphor of sorts... Christ is here, all around us, in our everyday lives but how often do we choose not to see or hear?

A few years ago, my family and I were welcomed into St Mary’s Priory and it rapidly became our spiritual home. It was here that I really started to listen for answers and my work as an artist moved in a new direction. The inspiration came from Canon Mark Soady, who challenged the congregation one sunny Sunday morning to use our gifts for their true purpose. It was an I am now eighteen months into this project and I am halfway through the series having just finished a painting of the ‘Raising of Lazarus’. At first I expected to paint some of my more traditional images alongside this new series, but it has become all consuming. It is a body of work that I feel compelled to do. I have received a great deal of encouragement from my family, my parish and many other Christian communities locally and worldwide. I am full of gratitude. Accompanying the paintings is a series of breathtaking poems written by Father Tom Bates that encourage us to immerse ourselves further into the Gospel message. You are most welcome to visit the exhibition as it develops at St Mary’s priory in Abergavenny and to come and have a chat with me in the Tithe Barn next door. If you would like any further information, or if you would like to exhibit the images when the series is complete then please do get in touch. Everything is made new, everything is illuminating the brass candlesticks and flowers. When they have gone, I remove all the candlesticks, flowers and foliage, so that in the Let me end with a true story. On Maundy Thursday morning, we see a stark altar, two wooden two years ago, we were all standing in the sanctuary candlesticks waiting for the liturgies of the day and a after Holy Communion, as is our custom. In all of this is enormous hope. We become a stable, central point for the pilgrimage of many nations, languages and people, all seeking God in this holy, blessed place. We see the altar that Bishop Frank Weston used being restored and singing with joy as our buildings are repaired around us, as our font drips with regular use, our votive stands remain warm and our icons seep oils as they lie on the altar, visible and invisible signs of grace. I long ago stopped trying to hold it together, because nothing of this belongs to me or needs me, I need it, I need God to keep His promises as He wishes to keep them – unpredictably but not irrationally – using us, making this place as holy as it may be.
