The term ‘Alternate History’ describes a genre of literature that presents fictional accounts of historical developments which deviate from the known course of hi story. These allohistorical narratives are inherently presentist, meaning that their central question of “What If?” can harness the repertoire of collective memory in order to act as both a reflection of and a commentary on contemporary social and political conditions. Moreover, Alternate Histories can act as a form of counter-memory insofar as the counterfactual mode can be used to highlight marginalized historical events. This study investigates a specific manifestation of this process. Contrasted with American and British examples, the primary focus is the analysis of the discursive functions of German-language counterfactual literature in the context of German normalization. The category of normalization connects a variety of commemorative trends in postwar Germany aimed at overcoming the legacy of National Socialism and re-formulating a positive German national identity. The central hypothesis is that Alternate Histories can perform a unique task in this particular discursive setting. In the context of German normalization, counterfactual stories of the history of the Third Reich are capable of functioning as alternate memories, meaning that they effectively replace the memory of real events with fantasies that are better suited to serve as exculpatory narratives for the German collective. -

ALON CONFINO Germany, International Justice and the 20th Century The turning of the millennium has predictably spurred fresh interest in reinterpreting the 20th century as a whole. Recent years have witnessed a bountiful crop of academic surveys, mass market picture books and television programs devoted to recalling the deeds and misdeeds of the last one hundred years. It then comes as no surprise that Germany often figures prominently in these new accounts. If nothing else, its responsibility for World War I, World War II and the Holocaust assures its villainous presence in most every retrospective on offer. That Germany alone experienced all of the modern forms of government in one compressed century – from constitutional monarchy, democratic socialism, fascism, Western liberalism to Soviet-style communism -- has also made it a favorite object lesson about the so-called Age of Extremes. Moreover, the enduring international influence of Weimar culture, feminism and the women’s movement, social democracy, post-1945 economic recovery, West German liberalism, environmental politics and most recently pacifism have also occasioned serious reconsideration of the contemporary relevance of the 20th century German past. Little wonder that several commentators have gone so far as to christen the “short twentieth century” between 1914 and 1989 as really the “German century,” to the extent that German history is commonly held as emblematic of Europe’s 20th century more generally.1 Acknowledging Germany’s central role in 20th century life has hardly made things easy for historians, however. -

Operation Sunrise: America’s OSS, Swiss Intelligence, and the German Surrender 1945 by Stephen P. Halbrook* Operation Sunrise was a cooperative effort of American and Swiss intelligence services which led to the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht forces in Northern Italy and Western Austria on May 2, 1945. General Heinrich von Vietinghoff, Commander-in- Chief of the Southwest Command and of Army Group C, surrendered nearly a million soldiers, the strongest remaining German force. This was the first great surrender of German forces to the Allies, and became a strong impetus for the final Allied victory over Nazi Germany on May 8, Victory in Europe (VE) Day. Operation Sunrise helped to nip in the bud Nazi aspirations for guerilla resistance in an Alpine redoubt. Sunrise, sometimes referred to as “Crossword,” has special significance today beyond the sixtieth anniversary of the German surrender. Despite Switzerland’s formal neutrality, Swiss intelligence agents aggressively facilitated American efforts to end the war. Ironically, the efforts of key U.S. intelligence agents on the ground to orchestrate the surrender were hampered and almost scuttled by leaders in Washington to appease Joseph Stalin, who wished to delay the surrender in the West so that Soviet forces could grab more territory in the East. *This paper was originally presented at the conference Sunrise ‘05, Locarno, Switzerland, May 2, 2005, and was published in “Operation Sunrise.” Atti del convegno internazionale (Locarno, 2 maggio 2005), a cura di Marino Viganò - Dominic M. HIS6934-09 State, Society, and Rebellion in Modern Germany Prof. Nathan Stoltzfus EUH 4465, Fall 06 447 Bel, [email protected] T 2:00 Bel 0048 COURSE DESCRIPTION The colloquium examines state and society in modern Germany to review the question of whether Germans have been as politically docile in history as in stereotypes. Within the various political structures that characterize modern Germany, how have ordinary Germans and society as a whole expressed influence, how important were popular uprisings in bringing about political reform, and how does this compare with the experiences of other European states? We will trace developments of the public political sphere in relationship to social disturbances and unrest, paying particular attention to the politics of the street, that public space of potential influence for ordinary people with little access to levers of power, whether within empire, regime, or democracy. REQUIREMENTS Each student must: 1) Read all the common reading assignments in advance of class. 2) Write a 500-word précis of the common reading and email it to the entire class by Monday noon in advance of Tuesday’s meetings. The précis should summarize a book or article’s thesis and identify its key points (rather than critically evaluating it). However, in addition you must each include in this email to the others two or more questions that will help the class critically evaluate the reading for that week. 3) Constructively and regularly contribute to seminar discussions. 4) Write one 5-page historiographic essay on one of the weekly course topics, distribute a copy of the essay to each student in class, and make an oral presentation of the material to the class. -

INFANTERIEDIVISION 1941/42 Das Tagebuch eines Regimentskommandeurs: Ein neuer Zugang zu einer berüchtigten Wehrmachtsdivision1 In der langen, erbitterten und nach wie vor andauernden Diskussion über die Wehr macht und ihre Verbrechen ist immer wieder auf einen einzelnen Verband verwiesen worden, so als ob es sich bei ihm um eine durchschnittliche Division der Wehrmacht gehandelt habe: Die 707. Infanteriedivision. In der ersten Wanderausstellung „Ver nichtungskrieg. Verbrechen der Wehrmacht 1941 bis 1944" des Hamburger Instituts für Sozialforschung bildete sie ein Hauptthema, um die Beteiligung der Wehrmacht am Vernichtungskrieg gegen die Sowjetunion zu belegen2. In der neu konzipierten Ausstellung „Verbrechen der Wehrmacht. Dimensionen des Vernichtungskrieges 1941-1944" erhielt diese Division gar ein eigenes Kapitel3. Auch in anderen Darstel lungen taucht gerade die 707. Infanteriedivision deutlich häufiger auf als jede andere Division der Wehrmacht4. Schon das verlangt nach einer Erklärung. Die 707. Infan teriedivision war in der Tat während ihrer Besatzungszeit in Weißrußland 1941/42 eine Art Bindeglied zwischen der Wehrmacht und den Einsatzgruppen der Sicher heitspolizei und des SD und hat sich durch Massenerschießungen aktiv am Holo caust beteiligt. Collective Remembrance and Private Choice: German-Greek Conflict and Consumer Behavior in Times of Crisis* Vasiliki Fouka† Hans-Joachim Voth‡ January 2021 Abstract How is collective memory formed, and when does it impact behavior? We high- light two conditions under which the memory of past events comes to matter for the present: the associative nature of memory, and institutionalized acts of com- memoration by the state. During World War II, German troops occupying Greece perpetrated numerous massacres. Memories of those events resurfaced during the 2009 Greek debt crisis, leading to a drop in German car sales in Greece, especially in areas affected by German reprisals. Differential economic performance did not drive this divergence. Multiple pieces of evidence suggest that current events reac- tivated past memories, creating a backlash against Germany. RESOURCES ON THE GERMAN MILITARY AND THE HOLOCAUST The German Military and Hitler Adolf Hitler addresses a rally of the Nazi paramilitary formation, the SA (Sturmabteilung), in 1933. By 1934, the SA had grown to nearly four million members, significantly outnumbering the 100,000 man professional army. US Holocaust Memorial Museum, courtesy of William O. McWorkman The military played an important role in Germany. It was closely identified with the essence of the nation and operated largely independent of civilian control or politics. With the 1919 Treaty of Versailles after World War I, the victorious powers attempted to undercut the basis for German militarism by imposing restrictions on the German armed forces, including limiting the army to 100,000 men, curtailing the navy, eliminating the air force, and abolishing the military training academies and the General Staff (the elite German military planning institution). On February 3, 1933, four days after being appointed chancellor, Adolf Hitler met with top military leaders to talk candidly about his plans to establish a dictatorship, rebuild the military, reclaim lost territories, and wage war. In the following years, however, Hitler gradually established full authority over the military. For example, the 1934 purge of the Nazi Party paramilitary formation, the SA (Sturmabteilung), helped solidify the military’s position in the Third Reich and win the support of its leaders. -

1 Criminals with Doctorates An SS Officer in the Killing Fields of Russia, as Told by the Novelist Jonathan Littell Henry A. Lea University of Massachusetts-Amherst Lecture Delivered at the University of Vermont November 18, 2009 This is a report about the Holocaust novel The Kindly Ones which deals with events that were the subject of a war crimes trial in Nuremberg. By coincidence I was one of the courtroom interpreters at that trial; several defendants whose testimony I translated appear as major characters in Mr. Littell's novel. This is as much a personal report as an historical one. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to the murders committed by Nazi units in Russia in World War II. These crimes remain largely unknown to the general public. My reasons for combining a discussion of the actual trial with a critique of the novel are twofold: to highlight a work that, as far as I know, is the first extensive literary treatment of these events published in the West and to compare the author's account with what I witnessed at the trial. In the spring of 1947, an article in a Philadelphia newspaper reported that translators were needed at the Nuremberg Trials. I applied successfully and soon found myself in Nuremberg translating documents that were needed for the ongoing cases. After 2 passing a test for courtroom interpreters I was assigned to the so-called Einsatzgruppen Case. Einsatzgruppen is a jargon word denoting special task forces that were sent to Russia to kill Jews, Gypsies, so-called Asiatics, Communist officials and some mental patients. -
