EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE Sierra Leone Situation Report (SitRep) – 24 June 2014 1. Current situation As of 23 June 2014, a total of 13 samples from the following districts were received by the Kenema Government Hospital (KGH) VHF Laboratory: Bo (2), Kailahun (7), Kenema (2) and Moyamba (2). Of the 13 samples, all were analysed by the VHF Laboratory. Seven samples tested positive for Ebola (6 from Kailahun, 1 from Bo.) 3 samples (2 from Moyamba, 1 from Bo) were negative. Test results are pending for the remaining 3 cases. The cumulative number of laboratory confirmed cases is 163 while the cumulative number of confirmed deaths is 46. The cumulative number of probable deaths (46) exceeds that of cumulative probable cases due to individuals identified in community through contact tracing. These community-based deaths for which samples are not taken are not included in cumulative number of probable cases. Forty seven (47) cases are currently admitted at the Kenema Government Hospital. 35 patients are from Kailahun and 12 patients are from Kenema. Since the beginning of the outbreak, KGH has discharged a total of fifteen (15) cases. 2. Surveillance and Laboratory Finalized plan for training of contact tracing of 300 community volunteer on contact tracing Mobile phones provided by Airtel will be given to volunteers for reporting on contact tracing 5. Social mobilization SLRC and IFRC continue sensitization exercise in communities in Kailahun district on Ebola prevention and control activities Community members are calling health staff and requesting them to pick up patients from villages and towns to treatment centres Community members have volunteered to take part in identification of contacts Communities are requesting for chlorine to be used for hand washing and spraying of houses where confirmed cases leave Traditional leaders are involved in community mobilization and have instituted by laws to ensure that all suspected cases are reported immediately; Strangers must report to health authorities before being allowed in the community; all burials must be supervised by health authorities No hand shaking going on in targeted communities 6. Logistics Mapping of partners contribution done by the committee in Kailahun district 7. Travel advice There is no travel restriction to any district or neighbouring countries of Guinea and Liberia. However, the ministry of health is working on setting up screening facilities for passengers going in and out of Kailahun 8. Technical support Urgent need for clinicians to be deployed in the Kenema, Daru and Kailahun treatment centres 3 | P a g e 9. Challenges Contact tracing and data management still remain a challenge Technical support needed for Anthropologist, epidemiologist, data manager, public health specialist and laboratory 10. Planned activities Preparation commence for the training of 300 community volunteers in Kailahun district on contact tracing and reporting Preparation commenced for cross border meeting to be held in Kailahun district on 23 June 2014 Prepare and use EVD survivals for social mobilization as champions to reduce myths about Ebola Distribution of additional PPEs to Kenema and Kailahun districts 11.
