Racial Gatekeeping in Country & Hip-Hop Music By Cervanté Pope Student ID #: 947767021 Portland State University Pope 2 Introduction In mass communication, gatekeeping refers to how information is edited, shaped and controlled in efforts to construct a “social reality” (Shoemaker, Eichholz, Kim, & Wrigley, 2001). Gatekeeping has expanded into other fields throughout the years, with its concepts growing more and more easily applicable in many other aspects of life. One way it presents itself is in regard to racial inclusion and equality, and despite the headway we’ve seemingly made as a society, we are still lightyears away from where we need to be. Because of this, the concept of cultural property has become even more paramount, as a means for keeping one’s cultural history and identity preserved.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 14, 2016 From a Policy Advocate Who Ignited a National Conversation on Criminal Justice to an Acclaimed Musician Preserving the Cultural Heritage of New Orleans: The 21st Heinz Awards Honors Five Distinguished Changemakers Heinz Family Foundation Announces $1.25 Million in Awards PITTSBURGH, September 14, 2016—The Heinz Family Foundation today announced the winners of the 21st Heinz Awards, which will present unrestricted cash awards totaling $1.25 million to five exceptional Americans whose innovation and passion for solving critical issues facing people and the planet are making an impact both here and abroad. This year’s recipients include an extraordinary musician whose philanthropy and mentorship is preserving the cultural heritage of his native New Orleans; a visionary whose optimistic view of our ability to change the course of climate change and secure a healthy future for our planet is justified by the proven, meaningful solutions he has implemented to reduce carbon emissions and energy waste; a pediatrician whose interventions are raising awareness of the link between chronic health issues and trauma experienced in infancy and childhood; a civil rights attorney and author who is leading a national dialogue on race and mass incarceration, and who has sparked a paradigm shift in criminal justice policies; and an entrepreneur whose accessible, no-cost website creation tool is helping to democratize publishing for all and fostering a new economy. As part of the accolade, each recipient will receive an unrestricted cash award of $250,000. “Though they come from diverse backgrounds and represent wide-ranging fields of knowledge and expertise, these outstanding men and women that we honor this year embody the true spirit of the Heinz Awards,” said Teresa Heinz, chairman of the Heinz Family Foundation.

  • Mason Ramsey Bio
Mason Ramsey Bio Skyrocketing to fame with an oversized voice, a huge love of classic Country and enormous personality to match, 11-year-old Mason Ramsey is the biggest little star in Country music today. An internet sensation who’s captured the hearts of million of fans, Ramsey was discovered in 2018 when a foot-tapping video of the youngster yodeling in a Walmart located in Harrisburg, Illinois, went viral. Since then he’s charmed on national television and dazzled the trendiest music festivals, become the youngest Country artist to sign with a major record label in a generation, stood tall on the Grand Ole Opry stage and released an acclaimed debut single, “Famous” – but his journey is only just getting started. Living the vast majority of his 11 years in the tiny, tight-knit community Golconda, Illinois, Ramsey was raised by his grandparents from the age of three weeks old. Describing their home as a time capsule of sorts (with no internet connection but an extensive stack of classic records), Ramsey’s grandfather would occasionally host huge karaoke barbecues which the whole town would attend, and by the age of three Ramsey was right in the middle of it. “Literally before he was doing sentences and phrases, he was picking up on singing,” recalls Daysha Broadway, his older cousin. “Mason is a very old soul when it comes to music – and his temperament and personality.” Influenced strongly by icons like Hank Williams Sr., Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Randy Travis, but also by new-school Country and Pop stars including Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, and Ed Sheeran, Ramsey made his first public appearance at the Kentucky Opry just two weeks after he turned four.
